This study was investigated discharge and water quality for rainy days at the inflow streams (Gog-Kyo, Mu-Han, Sap-Kyo and Nam-Won) into Lake Sap-Kyo from June to November of 1999. The eventual aim of this study was to improve the water quality of Lake Sap-Kyo. Therefore, in order to reduce inflow pollutants loading into Lake Sap-Kyo, we investigated characteristics of stormwater runoff and estimated pollutant loading for the rainy season. The results of that Sap-Kyo stream is $5.75\;m^3/sec$ flow and influences water quantity of Lake Sap-Kyo greatly during the dry weather. Gog-Kyo stream influence to quantity of Lake Sap-Kyo greatly for the rainy days. Gog-Kyo stream and Sap-Kyo stream are $12.13\;m^3/sec$ and $8.49\;m^3/sec$, respectively. The reason is that the watershed area of Gog-Kyo stream is larger than other streams. When we prepare to plan management to improve the water quality of Lake Sap-Kyo, we have to consider that runoff characteristics by land use. Among the annual total pollutants loading inflow Lake Sap-Kyo, the ratio of non-point pollutants loading estimated that SS, BOD, T-N and T-P are 62%, 43%, 41% and 27%, respectively. Therefore, in order to improve water quality of Lake Sap-Kyo, we have to reduce non-point pollutants loading.
Temporal and spatial variations of size-structured phytoplankton (chlorophyll a) were investigated over an annual cycle (February-October, 2003) to elucidate phytoplankton dynamics in the Juam Reservoir, Chonnam. Physical properties were also measured to investigate the relationship between the properties and temporal and spatial variations of size structured phytoplankton using simple linear regression. Phytoplankton (chlorophyll a) were grouped into three size classes: micro-size(> 20 ${\mu}m$), nano-size (3-20 ${\mu}m$) and pico-size (< 3 ${\mu}m$) in this study. Physical properties included water temperature, light attenuation coefficients, PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) and turbidity. Maximum chlorophyll a was observed in April, 2003 in the lower region whereas a peak of chlorophyll a developed in October, 2003 in the upper region. Large cell-sized phytoplankton (micro-size class)were dominant in the events of the chlorophyll a peaks. Potential mechanisms in the physical properties affecting the size-structured phytoplankton dynamics in the Juam Reservoir were discussed.
The fate and transport of many trace metals, metalloids, and radionuclides in porous media is closely linked to the biogeochemical reactions that occur as a result of organic carbon being sequentially degraded by different microorganisms using a series of terminal electron acceptors. The spatial distribution of these biogeochemical reactions is affected by processes that are often unique and/or characteristic to a specific environment. Generic model formulations have been developed and applied to simulate the fate and transport of arsenic in two hydrologic settings, permanently flooded freshwater sediments, namely non-vegetated wetland sediments and vegetated wetland sediments. The key physical processes that have been considered are sedimentation, effects of roots on biogeochemistry, advective transport, and differences in mixing processes. Steady-state formulations were applied to the sedimentary environments. Results of numerical simulations show that these physical processes significantly affect the chemical profiles of different electron acceptors, their reduced species, and arsenate as well as arsenite that will result from the degradation of an organic carbon source in the sediments. Even though specific biological transformations are allowed to proceed only in zones where they are thermodynamically favorable, the results show that mixing as well as abiotic reactions can make the profiles of individual electron acceptors overlap and/or appear to reverse their expected order.
Primary productivity of phytoplankton was measured by $^{14}C$ method from January to October of 1996 in Seonakdong River. This river was a highly productive freshwater showing the euphotic depth of 1.4 m in August and 2.1 m in the remaining season. Chlorophyll-a concentrations of phytoplankton ranged from 67 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ to 894 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ and showed the great increase in August. Maximum specific productivity was 2.1 ${\sim}$4.3 mg C mg $chl-a{-1}\;hr^{-1}$ and occurred above 0.4m depth. In photosynthesis-irradiance relation, photoinhibition or photosynthetic suppression of phytoplankton occurred clearly in the cold seasons, while phytoplankton (mainly Microcystis aeruginosa and its relatives) in August did not show any symptom of the photosynthetic inhibition against the high irradiance. The specific productivity of phytoplankton was eventually dependant upon incident irradiance to show the linear correlation with received irradiance infield, and the areal productivity of phytoplankton upon chlorophyll-a standing crops. In the downstream of the Nakdong River, phytoplankton productions have linearly increased since the estuarine barrage construction to reflect the gradual eutrophication in the estuarine area. Average chlorophyll-a increase of 10 ${\mu}g\;chl-a\;L{-1}$ absolutely corresponded to the primary production acceleration of 30 mg C $m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$ on the annual basis.
This study was carried out to find out potential use of ochre as an agent to reduce phosphorus content in water. Ochre is a by-product from treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) which is composed mostly of $Fe_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3{\cdot}H_2O$, $FeO{\cdot}OH$ and $Fe(OH)_3$. Three ochre samples (ochre-H, ochre-D and ochre-S) were collected from three treatment facilities in Gangwon province. Physico-chemical characteristics of three ochre samples including pH, electrical conductivity, total phosphorus, available phosphorus, particle size distribution were analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis were also carried out. In addition, experiments for phosphorus removal from water was performed. Calcium content of ochre-H was higher than that of ochre-D and ochre-S, whereas iron content of ochre-H was lower than that of ochre-D and ochre-S. All the phosphorus in water up to maximum 191,411 mg $kg^{-1}$ per unit mass of ochre was removed with ochre-H. Ochre has immense potential as an agent to reduce phosphorus content in water.
This study was conducted to clarify effects of weed control methods on damages from agricultural chemicals of pear trees, growth of weeds and states of pear trees after treating pear orchards with different methods of weed controlling, density of GLU and application times. The growth and occupation rate were investigated after 10, 20 and 40 days of weeding treatment. According to a result of the first treatment conducted when weeds in the lower parts of crown in a pear orchard began to grow and grew about 20 cm, unwoven cloth covering showed the highest control value with 100% in all 14 kinds of grasses. In comparison, Stellaria aquatica and catchweed bedstraw showed 96.7% and 97.3% respectively in the 20 DAT investigate after the first treatment of GLU 540 g a.i. ha-1 and the high control value of 100% in other all kinds of grasses. According to an investigation of stalk enlargement, length of new shoot and the number of new shoot made to know differences in tree growth following treatment of the lower part of crown, to use weed killers two or three times a year or to eliminate grasses with machines have positive effects on cross growth of pear trees.
The total global emission of $CO_2$ from soils is recognized as one of the largest fluxes in the global carbon cycle. Especially it is necessary to quantify the amount of $CO_2$ emitted by the organic material decomposition processes of microorganisms in the soil, because it becomes one of a factor for determining the carbon stocks in the soil. This study was conducted to estimate the impact of the Korean water deer(Hydropotes inermis)' feces to the soil organic matter. Also, effects of Korean water deer' feces on $CO_2$ emissions of soil and land use pattern dependent $CO_2$ flux quantification are studied. The organic materials in the Korean water deer' feces significantly changed organic matter content of soil and influenced the activity of soil microorganisms, both changing of respiration of the soil and physical chemical components in soil. In particular, C/N ratio and the $CO_2$ flux of soil of four regions (Rice paddy, Fallow ground, Salix koreensis community, Phragmites australis community) showed a statistically highly significant correlation (P<0.01) with the presence or absence of feces. $CO_2$ flux of soil affected by the feces was 2-20 times higher than the soil unaffected by the feces. This study has great significance to quantify the extent of the material circulation and its impact to the terrestrial ecosystem and soil zone throughout Korean water deer' feces. Feces of wildlife can affect soil and soil material circulation.
The porous pavement system is widely considered very effective in urban street because of its various benefits on safety and environment, but the pavement thickness design system has not been established yet. In porous pavement system. rainwater penetrates to the subgrade through porous pavements layers. Porous pavements are expected to reduce or alleviate the problems caused by impermeable pavement layer such as flood damage due to heavy rain in the city, drainage load, disorder in ecosystem, and heat island. However, its structural design methods in traffic roads has not been made mainly because of not being able to consider adequately the effect of rainwater on subgrade strength. In this study, structural design method of porous pavements is suggested after considering the subgrade weakness due to rainwater and numerical mechanical analysis. It is noted that elastic modulus of subgrade is reduced by 20% as subgrade moisture content is increased by 2% at optimum moisture content in the literature review. As a result of both finite element analysis and strength loss of subgrade by the existing design method, it is necessary to increase subbase thickness about 30cm in porous pavements compared with the existing traffic road pavement system. It is similar to premium thickness of structural design of porous pavements in Japan.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the vegetation structure of Bulguksa around Buddhist Temple Forest in the Gyeongju National Park. To do so, forty-two plots($100m^2$) were set up and surveyed. The surveyed plots were divided into four groups according to the analysis of classification by TWINSPAN; (I) Pinus densiflora-Pinus koraiensis community, (II) Pinus densiflora community, (III) Pinus densiflora-Acer palmatum community, (IV) Acer palmatum-Pinus densiflora community. The results of vegetation structure analysis were; Bulguksa around Buddhist Temple Forest in the Gyeongju National Park were dominated by Pinus densiflora. IV community, influx of Acer palmatum in Pinus densiflora community, Acer palmatum-Pinus densiflora community are believed to be a change to the community. But, recent spontaneously is growing Quercus variabilis, Quercus aliena, Quercus serrata, Quercus mongolica in understory and shrub layer. Later, it is expected that Pinus densiflora competition. The forest vegetation age of the study area is Pinus densiflora were dominant trees in forest was 30~100 years, old while that of Acer palmatum was 30~36 years old.
The study of insect fauna in Taeanhaean National Park in Korea began with the first survey of natural resources in 1996, and then the surveys were conducted seasonally from 2005 to 2014. The surveyed sites were mostly coastal areas, sand dunes, and back grasslands. Insects were collected by sweeping with insect net, suction, pitfall trap, light trap, and Malaise trap. As a result, a total of 1,540 species of 215 families belonging to 17 orders were identified. Lepidoptera was the most populous group at 34.2% and followed by Coleoptera at 28.3%, Hemiptera at 12.7%, Diptera at 8.5%, Hymenoptera at 7.1%, Orthoptera at 4.7%, Odonata at 2.0%, and others. The analysis of change of arenaceous insect fauna before and after the accident by the Hebei Spirit that spilt oil in Taean in December 2007 showed that 45 arenaceous insect species, mostly belonging to Coleoptera, were observed through the whole survey period. The impact of oil spill on the number of arenaceous insect species appearing in the area was minor.
