  • A hybrid thin film was prepared by doping reduced graphene oxide (rGO) into a sol-gel solution mixed with aluminum, titanium, and strontium using a brush coating method. The annealing temperature was carried out at 160, 260, and 360℃, and the difference in oxidation reaction was observed. The sol-gel solution created during the membrane manufacturing process generates a contractile force due to the shear stress of the brush bristles, forming a microgroove structure. This structure was confirmed through scanning electron microscopy analysis, and the presence of rGO was clearly revealed. As the annealing temperature increases, the oxidation and reduction reactions on the thin film surface become more active, so the intensity of the surface mixture increases. Moreover, the electro-optical properties were stabilized and improved by increasing the intensity of the mixtures. Likewise, the voltage-capacitance values are also significantly improved. Lastly, the transmittance measurement showed that it was suitable for liquid crystal display application.

  • Kinetics for the nucleophiles have been studied under high vacuum and high pressures in various temperatures. Pseudo-first order rate constants, second order rate constants, thermodynamic parameters and Hammett ${\rho}$-values are determined. The values of ${\Delta}V^{\neq},\;{\Delta}{\beta}^{\neq}\;and\;{\Delta}S^{\neq}$are all negative. The Hammett r-values are negative for the nucleophile (${\rho}$x) over the pressure range studied. The results of kinetic studies for pressure and nucleophilet show that these reactions proceed in typical $S_N2$ reaction mechanism and change of mechanism.

  • The thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) system is essential for cell survival and function by playing a pivotal role in maintaining homeostasis of cellular redox and regulating signal transduction pathways. The TrxR system comprises thioredoxin (Trx), TrxR, and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate. Trx reduced by the catalytic reaction of the TrxR enzyme reduces downstream proteins, resulting in protection against oxidative stress and regulation of cell differentiation, growth, and death. Cancer cells survive by improving their intracellular antioxidant capacity to eliminate excessively generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to infinite cell proliferation and a high metabolic rate. Therefore, cancer cells have high dependence and sensitivity to antioxidant systems, suggesting that focusing on TrxR, a representative antioxidant system, is a potential strategy for cancer therapy. Several studies have revealed that TrxR is expressed at high levels in various types of cancers, and research on anticancer activity targeting the TrxR system is increasing. In this review, we discuss the feasibility and value of the TrxR system as a strategy for anticancer activity research by examining the relationship between the function of the intracellular TrxR system and the development and progression of cancer, considering the anticancer activity and mechanism of TrxR inhibitors.

  • This study was conducted to monitor the quality characteristics of Acai (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) ethanolic extracts by a response surface methodology. The independent variables in the extraction experiments were ethanol concentration (0~100%), extraction temperature ($35{\sim}95^{\circ}C$), and ratio of solvent to sample (10~30 mL/g). The coefficients of determinations ($R^2$) were 0.9596 (p<0.01), 0.9356 (p<0.01), and 0.8842 (p<0.05) for total polyphenol, total flavonoid, and electron donating ability, respectively. The electron donating ability and nitrite scavenging effect improved with an increase in ethanol concentration as opposed to extraction temperature. Anthocyanin content with extraction conditions was 74.421~291.841 mg/L and the coefficient of determinations ($R^2$) was 0.9792 (p<0.01). ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) with extraction conditions was 137.73~562.94 ${\mu}moles$ TE/g and increased with an increase in ethanol concentration and a decrease in the ratio of solvent to sample content. Estimated conditions for maximum extraction including yield, total polyphenol, total flavonoid, electron donating ability, anthocyanin content, and ORAC were 28~58% for ethanol concentration, $60{\sim}68^{\circ}C$ for extraction temperature, and 10~12 mL/g for ratio of solvent to sample.

  • Effects of free alkali and moisture on sucrose polyesters (SPE)-possible non calorie fat substitute-synthesis were investigated using a model system composed of sodium oleate, sucrose, potassium carbonate and methyl oleate. Trace amounts of free alkali in sodium oleate were found to interefere with SPE synthesis. When free alkali content in sodium oleate was varied gradually from 0% to 5%(w/w), the yield of SPE production was reduced from 92% to 45.5%. The moisture absorbed in sodium oleate, sucrose and potassium carbonate during storage also interefered with SPE synthesis. The yield (92%) of SPE production with dried ($105^{\circ}C$.6 hrs) reactants and catalysts was higher than that (89%) of SPE production with non-dried. Soybean oil fatty acid sodium soaps (FASS) not containing free alkali could be manufactured with slightly less than molar ratio of sodium hydroxide to soybean oil fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). Practically, 91.7% yield of soybean oil SPE production was outcomed by minimizing free alkali and moisture which were remaining in sucrose, potassium carbonate, soybean oil FASS and soybean oil FAME.

  • Esterification of free fatty acid with methanol to biodiesel was investigated in a batch reactor using various solid acid catalysts, such as polymer cation-exchanged resins with sulfuric acid functional group(Amberlyst-15, Dowex 50Wx8), acidic ionic liquids (ILs)-modified silica gels respectively with $-SO_3H$ and $-SO_2Cl$ functional group ($SiO_2-[ASBI][HSO_4]$, $SiO_2-[ASCBI][HSO_4]$) and grafted silica gels respectively with $-SO_3H$ and $-SO_2Cl$ functional group ($SiO_2-R-SO_3H$, $SiO_2-R-SO_2Cl$). The effects of reaction time, temperature, reactant concentration(molar ratio of methanol to oleic acid), and catalyst amount were studied. Allylimidazolium-based ILs on modified silica gels were superior to other tested solid acid catalysts. Especially, the performance of $SiO_2-[ASBI][HSO_4]$ (immobilized by grafting of 3-allyl-1-(4-sulfobutyl)imidazolium hydrogen sulfate on silica gel) was better than that of a widely known Amberlyst-15 catalyst at the same reaction conditions. A high conversion yield of 96% was achieved in the esterification reaction of the simulated cooking oil at 353 K for 2 h. The high catalytic activity of $SiO_2-[ASBI][HSO_4]$ was attributed to the presence of strong Brønsted acid sites from the immobilized functional groups. The catalyst was recovered and the biodiesel product was separated by simple processes such as decantation and filtration.

  • This study examined the stress reaction, resilience levels, and the effects of the stress reaction on the resilience among dental hygiene students. From July 11, 2016 to July 29, 2016, questionnaires were collected from 274 dental hygiene students in several areas. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression using SPSS Statistics ver.21.0. The stress reaction level of dental hygiene students was found to be 2.59 out of 5 points and the resilience level was 4.47 out of 7 points. The stress reaction and resilience showed a significant negative correlation in Fatigue, Tension, Frustration, Anger, Depression, Aggression(p>0.001), and stomatization(p>0.05). In other words, the lower the resilience, the higher the stress reaction. The factors of stress reaction influencing the resilience were depression and somatization, which explained 25.6%(R2=0.256). Therefore, to enhance the resilience of dental hygiene students, it is important to investigation the stress reaction and there should be more concern with students who have higher depression and stomatization. In addition, efforts to control the stress reaction are needed.

  • The purpose of this study was to optimize experimental conditions (time ($X_1$) (ranging of 26.36 - 93.64 min), concentration of sulfuric acid ($X_2$) (ranging of 0-2.5%) and temperature ($X_3$) (ranging of $136.4-203.6^{\circ}C$) for an organosolv pretreatment process to extract lignin from waste wood. The resulting quadratic model equation using RSM (response surface methodology) represented y (lignin yield) = $-79.89+0.91X_1+9.8X_2-2.54{\times}10^{-3}X_1{^2}-2.11X_2{^2}$. The $R^2$ (coefficient of determination) value of 0.8531 for a model indicates this model has statistically significant predictors at the 10% levels. The predictive results optimized by quadratic model produced a lignin yield of 12.46 g/100 g of dry wood under conditions of $178.2^{\circ}C$ and 2.32% $H_2SO_4$. The lignin yield was more affected by the acid catalyst concentrations than the reaction temperature, but the reaction time was not an influential factor for improving lignin extraction from waste wood in this organosolv pretreatment. According to ANOVA (analysis of variance), the significance probability (p-value) of model was smaller than 0.001 and simulation of obtained model equations showed a good reproducibility based on actual organosolv tests under optimal conditions.

  • There have been many studies on patients who suffer from anxiety disorders. However, there is been not enough attention on the difference in the level of between the two populations with and without anxiety disorders. This study was performed to investigate the difference in the ANS responses induced by fear in children. Experimental procedures were as follow: All subjects were in upper grade levels in elementary school. ANX(anxiety) scales of PIC(Personality Inventory for Children) were used to measure fear anxiety. Audio-visual clips were used as stimulus to provoke fear emotion. Baseline of physiological signals, ECG, PPG, EDA, and SKT, were measured for 30 seconds before the fear stimulus. Physiological signals were then recorded for 2 minutes while fear is evoked. Psychological and physiological responses were analyzed. All the children reacted to the fear stimulus with high intensity of fear. Physiological responses showed that SKT, SCR, NSCR, HR, RSA, RESP, HF were increased, while R-R was significantly decreased, respectively, during the period of fear induction. Analysis of the level of anxiety and the physiological responses produced by the experience of fear revealed a statistically significant positive correlation in SKT, HR, and RSA. In other words, the higher the level of anxiety, the higher the levels of SKT, HR, and RSA when children experienced fear in conclusion, it is confirmed through this research that physiological responses to fear is associated with the level of anxiety each individual.

  • Dipyridine-terminated polystyrenes and polybutadienes were synthesized by the chain endfunctionalization reaction of polystyryllithium (PSLi) and polybutadienyllithium (PBDLi) with di(2-pyridyl) ketone(DPK) using a living anionic polymerization method in the Ar-glove box. Living polymeric lithiums with low molecular weights (Mw=1000~2000 g/mol) were used to investigate the chain end-functionalization yield with DPK and the degree of coupling reaction by the attack of organolithium to the pyridine ring in the presence of TMEDA using GPC, $^1H$-NMR, $^{13}C$ analysis. DPK-terminated PBD exhibited much higher functionalization yield and less amount of coupling reaction compared with DPK-terminated PS. 86% functionalization yield with 9% degree of coupling was obtained when the PBDLi was added dropwise to DPK solution at room temperature. The functionalization yield was increased as the reaction temperature decreased, however, no LiCl effect was observed in this chain end-functionalization reaction with DPK.
