  • In this study, the impact of sand and weathered granite soil is analyzed by changing the internal temperature from $20^{\circ}C{\sim}70^{\circ}C$C by installing a heating coil inside the triaxial cell. To check the effect on weathered granite soil due to increase of temperature and number of heating-coiling cycles are analyzed by measuring the temperature by using thermometer installed inside the triaxial cell and due to that deviator stress also occurred during the consolidated undrained test. To analyze the effect of weathered granite soil with change of temperature during undrained testing. The deviator stress and pore pressure is measured. As a result, pore pressure increases and the deviator stress decreases with rise of temperature.

  • This paper presents a hypoplastic model for three-dimensional analysis of concrete structures under monotonic, cyclic, proportional and non-proportional loading. The constitutive model is based on the concept of equivalent uniaxial strains that allows the assumed orthotropic model to be described via three equivalent uniaxial stress-strain curves. The characteristics of these curves are obtained from the ultimate strength surface in the principal stress space based on the Willam-Warnke curve. A cap model is added to consider loading along or near the hydrostatic axis. The equivalent uniaxial curve is based on the Popovics and Saenz models. The post-peak behavior is adjusted to account for the effects of confinement and to describe the change in response from brittle to ductile as the lateral confinement increases. Correlation studies with available experimental tests are presented to demonstrate the model performance. Tests with monotonic loading on specimens under constant lateral confinement are considered first, followed by biaxial and triaxial tests with cyclic loads. The triaxial test example considers non-proportional loading.

  • The permanent deformation of asphalt pavement is one of the most important load-related distresses in asphalt pavement. In order to evaluate the permanent deformation, the repeated triaxial load test with different temperature and air void of hot mix asphalt was carried out. The permanent deformation prediction model has been validated by the multiple regression approach and the artificial neural networks.

  • The structure of railroad or subway is that low fare transportation system of the large traffic volume. Like this structure is subjected to the cyclic load of moving vehicle. Consequently the result of the settlement analysis or plastic deformation prediction of railroad bed could be used as an important factor in safety of the railroad. The results of cyclic triaxial test were used in the numerical analysis of power model which Li and Selig(1994) developed. The soil samples were obtained from the construction site of railroad. Cyclic triaxial test was conducted with the variation of the magnitude of cyclic load and soil types. The large magnitude of plastic deformation in the railroad bed is caused of structure failure of the railroad.

  • Plastic deformation of roadbed influences the stability and maintenance of concrete slab track. Long-term plastic deformation in a railway roadbed is generated primarily due to accumulated inelastic strains caused by repeated passing of trains. Prediction of cumulative plastic deformation is important in cost-effective maintenance of railway tracks as well as for the safe operation of trains. In this study, the vertical displacements in railway roadbeds with different thicknesses of reinforced roadbed were computed. Parameters of the power model for cumulative plastic strain were calibrated by using the data from triaxial tests and full-scale loading tests. Results of three-dimensional finite element analyses of standard roadbed sections provide us with design guidelines for the selection of the thickness of reinforced roadbed.

  • In this paper, the application of the DSC model to the analysis of liquefaction potential is examined through experimental and analytical investigations. For more realistic description of dynamic responses of saturated sands, the DSC model was modified based on the dynamic effective stress path and excess pore pressure development. Both static and cyclic undrained triaxial tests were performed for sands with different relative densities and confining stresses. Based on test results, a classification of liquefaction phases in terms of the dynamic effective stress path and the excess pore pressure development was proposed and adopted into the modified DSC model. The proposed methods using the original and modified DSC models were compared with examples with different relative densities and confining stresses. Based on the comparisons between the predicted results using the original and modified DSC models and experimental data, the parameters required to define the model were simplified. It was also found that modified model more accurately simulate initial liquefaction and dynamic responses of soil under cyclic undrained triaxial tests.

  • This paper deals with development and dissipation of excess pore pressure induced by the cyclic load. Cyclic triaxial tests on reconstituted samples of weathered residual soils, which were widely used as construction materials in Korea, were performed. Test results showed that excess pore pressures developed under undrained condition increased with the increase of cyclic loads and confining pressures. And a new concept based on modified excess pore pressure ratio (MEPPR) was proposed for simply estimating excess pore pressures in terms of the number of cyclic load, irrespective of cyclic loads and confining pressures. Also, it was proposed that excess pore pressure ratio (EPPR) could be effectively utilized to estimate volumetric strains during dissipation which decreased as confining pressures increased. Consequently, concept and method to effectively estimate settlements under non-liquefied condition, induced by dynamic loads such as earthquake loads were evaluated based on laboratory test results for reconstituted weathered residual soils.

  • The performance of the improved soil against liquefaction depends upon the chemical density, and it has been decided on the basis of the unconfined compressive strength of the improved soil up to date. On the other hand, several authors have proposed that the stiffness degradation could be treated as the clue for the judgment of the possibility of liquefaction. In this study, therefore, the stiffness degradation of the improved soil was estimated as the resistance against liquefaction by using the strain controlled cyclic triaxial test equipment. Based on the test results, it is concluded that the chemically treated sand can resist against the liquefaction in aspect of the reduction in effective stress and in the stiffness. Furthermore, even in the case of low chemical density, such as 2% in this study, has enough liquefaction resistance when compared with the 5~6% which often used in practical design. Considering this fact, the design of chemical density based on the unconfined strength can lead the overestimation in chemical density, and chemical density can be reduced when considering the stiffness reduction shown in this study.

  • The comparative study using the lab-scale experiment and the discrete element analysis is attempted to analyze the cross-anisotropic elasticity of granular soils. The lab-scale experiment consists of the small stress-controlled triaxial cyclic tests and the bender element tests. In the discrete element analysis the simulations of lab-scale cyclic tests are conducted in the various directions. Good agreement between the experimental data and the simulation on the elastic properties in the axial and shear directions confirms the usefulness of the discrete element method. The comparative analysis of the difference in the experimental data and the simulation of radial cyclic tests shows that the discrete element method can successfully be used to check the reasonable magnitude of each measurement in the experiments.

  • In most design codes, soils are classified as either sandy or clayey soils, and appropriate design equations for each soil type are used to estimate their soil behaviour. However, sand-fine mixtures, which are typically referred to as intermediate soils, are somewhere at the middle of sandy or clayey soils, and therefore a unified interpretation of soil behaviour is necessary. In this paper, a series of cyclic shear tests were carried out for three different combinations of sand-fine mixtures with various fines content. Silica-sand mixture and fines (Iwakuni natural clay, Tottori silt, kaolinite) were mixed together with various mass ratios, while paying attention to the changes of void ratios expressed in terms of sand structure. The cyclic shear strengths of the mixtures below the threshold fines content were examined with the increasing fines contents. As a result, as the fines contents increased, their cyclic deviator stress ratios decreased for dense samples while it increased for loose samples. Additionally, cyclic deviator stress ratio of the mixtures was estimated using the concept of equivalent granular void ratio.
