  • The objective of this case is to introduce KT&G's marketing strategy to go beyond its crisis. KT&G's crisis has started from tobacco which is its cash cow. Tobacco has been criticized as one of cancer causes. Until now Go and NGO suppress smoking. Its crisis is non-smoking. To live and grow beyond this crisis KT&G has 4 marketing strategies. First, they introduce new product tobacco by segmenting smoking market. Second, they want to get strong brand which has high quality, price premium, and favorable image. Third, they try to connect tobacco and bio-industry. Tobacco is very important resources of bio-industry. Finally, they is going to enter well-being market by its strength which is ginseng.

  • Effects of aqueous ammonia soaking to three annual plants (hemp woody core, tobacco stalk and corn stover) awere investigated to focus on the enzymatic saccharification characteristics change by this treatment. At two different levels of treatment ($90^{\circ}C$-16 h and $45^{\circ}C$-6 days), higher temperature treatment led to more enzymatic saccharification of cellulose to glucose by commercial cellulase mixtures (Celluclast 1.5L and Novozym 342 from Novozyme Korea). Difference among annual plants were significant. corn stover was the best response to enzymatic saccharification of cellulose and xylan by comercial enzymes all treatment conditions but tobacco stalk was the worst response to all of them. chemical composition or physical structure difference may brought this difference.

  • In this study, heated tobacco biomass was prepared as an active material for supercapacitor device. Retrieved tobacco leaf from the heated tobacco was carbonized at various temperature(800/850/950℃). Carbonized tobacco leaf material synthesized at 850℃ exhibited the highest C/O ratio, indicating the finest carbon quality. In addition, polypyrrole was coated onto the carbonized leaf material for increasing the electrochemical performance via low-temperature polymerization method. As-synthesized carbonized leaf material at 850℃(CTL-850)-based electrode and polypyrrole-coated carbonized leaf material(CTL-850/PPy)-based electrode displayed outstanding specific capacitances of 100.2 and 155.3F g-1 at 1 A g-1 with opertaing window of -1.0V and 1.0V. Asymmetric supercapacitor device, assembled with CTL-850 as the negative electrode and CTL-850/PPy as the positive electrode, manifested specific capacitance of 31.1F g-1(@1 A g-1) with widened operating voltage window of 2.0V. Moreover, as-prepared asymmetric supercapacitor device was able to lighten up the RED Led (1.8V), suggesting the high capacitance and extension of operating voltage window. The result of this research may help to pave the new possibility toward preparing the effective energy storage device material recycling the biomass.

  • The development of an enzymatic biosensor for dopamine determination based on multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and peroxidase obtained from the crude extract of burley tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) was proposed. Peroxidase catalyzes the oxidation of dopamine to dopamine quinone. The influence on the response of analytical parameters of biosensors such as enzyme concentration, dopamine concentration, pH, and phosphate buffer solution concentration were investigated. The analytical parameters obtained, including sensitivity, linearity, and stability, were investigated. The proposed method for dopamine determination presented good selectivity even in the presence of uric acid and ascorbic acid. The sensor presented a higher response for dopamine in 0.010 M phosphate buffer at pH 6.50, with an applied potential of -0.15 V. The detection limit of the electrode was 2.7×10−6 M (S/N = 3) and the relative standard deviation of the measurements, which were repeated 10 times using 5.0×10−2 M dopamine, was 1.3%.

  • High oil price and biodiesel expansion lead the surplus of glycerol in the market. Glycerol has been used as a raw material itself at petroleum chemistry, paint, tobacco, household products and cosmetics in the conventional market. Recently, many research to find new applications of glycerol as a low-cost feedstock for functional derivatives have led to the introduction of a number of selective processes for converting glycerol into commercially value-added products. The recent studies on the development of new value-added glycerol derivatives will be reviewed.

  • The chemical compositions, cell wall biopolymers and non-isothermal behavior of the stem biomass of Nicotiana Tabacum originated from tobacco industry were investigated in depth. On a weight basis, the contents of total ash and total sugar are 19.1% and 20.7% respectively. Lignin content was around 3% of tobacco stem biomass while pectin was over 7%. The holo-cellulose content in cell wall biopolymer was around 13% and the $\alpha$-cellulose constitutes 60% of the total holo-cellulose. The thermal behavior of stem biomass showed different patterns depending on either inert (nitrogen) or oxidizing (air) atmospheric condition. In the air atmosphere, the rapid thermal decompositions at around $473^{\circ}C$ and $581^{\circ}C$ were recorded as the peaks in DTG curve, while the peaks were not shown in the nitrogen atmosphere condition. The thermal analysis of the freeze dried soluble obtained from hot water extraction of tobacco stem biomass showed that the rapid thermal decomposition at around $581^{\circ}C$ in the air atmosphere was due to the residual char originated from the soluble fraction. The distinct difference in thermal decomposition between hemicellulose and cellulose were easily found in the DTG curve obtained in the nitrogen atmosphere.

  • Abiotic-stressed tobacco stems as a non-wooden biomass were analyzed for their chemical characteristics. Light-stressed tobacco stems (LST) have a relatively high nitrogen concentration, much more extractive content, and a similar amount of lignin and higher contents of acid sugars than those of Non stressed tobacco (NST). It also has low cellulose crystallinity and a high degree of condensation. Guaiacyl units having a lower molecular weight distribution consist of rich lignin. Tension stressed tobacco (TST) growth differentiation under tensile stress was significantly different between normal tissue and cell walls, with the exception of the slightly higher cellulose crystallinity observed for.
