The purpose of this study was to observe cospla subculture in 1990s new generation of Korean youth, focused on activity that was reproducing the appearance of individual characters in animation, comic books and computer games, and to understand the representing process and meaning of appearance. The ethnographic methods including in-depth interviews and observation were used to approach such cultural form more closely from the youth generations perspective and their language. The results were as follows: 1. Although the cospla is originated from Japan, the local experience of Koreans make it the special youth subculture of Korea. 2. There are homological features and hierachical structure among group members of cospla subculture. The core values of Korean cospla are that they are realizing their ideal and elevating their own self-esteem. 3. Their appearance has connotation as symbolic resistance. The cultural activity of cospla is non-realistic, non-productive, but cosplayers conform to the social norm, too.
As big data become more important socially and economically in recent years, many problems have been derived from the indiscriminate application of big data. Big data are valuable because it can figure out the meaning of informative information hidden within the data. In particular, to predict customer behavior patterns and experiences, structured data that were extracted from Customer Relationship Management (CRM) or unstructured data that were extracted from Social Network Service(SNS) can be defined as a population to interpret the data, during which many errors can occur. However, those errors are usually overlooked. In addition to data analysis techniques, some data, which should be considered in the analysis, are not included in the population and thus do not show any meaningful patterns. Therefore, this study presents the measurement and interpretation of the data generated when the cause of error in the population setting is strong relationship and interaction between people or a person and an object. In other words, it will be shown that if the relationship and interaction are strong, it is important to include data collected from the perspective of user experience and ethnography in the population by comparing various cases of big data application, through which the meaning will be derived and the best direction will be suggested.

The extremely isolated uninhabited island at the end of the West Sea in South Korea called "The Gyeokryeolbi Yeoldo" has recently begun to be managed by the government under the influence of public opinion demanding the island to be strictly protected. The island was created 70 million years ago by volcanic activities. So it is older than the birth history of Jeju Island, which is estimated to have been born about a million years ago. This study has focused on providing the basis for imagetelling and storytelling of the Gyeokryeolbi Yeoldo, known for its important value by exploring the cultural resources of the island. For the research, the ethnography including in-depth local interview and on-site investigation have been applied for 3 years from February 2018 to December 2020 in Taean, Chungnam Province, where the island is located. To analyze the cultural resources of this island, the resource classification model has been designed and used, which is modified from Valentine (2001) and Chi-ho Nam (2007). As a result, the "tangible cultural resources (TCR)" including various remains found on the island were mainly symbols of cultural bridge in the history of Korea-China exchange, and the spiritual land of life-saving. Also "intangible cultural resources (ICR)" extracted from the island were focused on the images of life protection, safety, bravery, and romance. Based on this study, the core concept of identity to be applied when refurbishing the island with a prominent cultural placeness( "sense of place") can be proposed as "a cultural ecological island centered on the Circular Yellow Sea that ruminates memories of love."
The purpose of this study is to understand the social and cultural implication of the activities of taking 'selfies' and the use of Social Network Service(SNS)s through the personal story of a 20s female researcher. She analyzes her own digital photography activities based on the experience of the use of Cyworld photo albums for three years and the use of pictures in iPhone album for fifteen months. The other researcher(40s male) cooperates to answer the questions about how to understand the digital photography activities. We understand the digital photography activities including digital cameras, social network services and smart phones as acts of personal identity configuration and acts of making the personal documentary. As a result, digital photos are used more for archive purpose rather than for document purpose. Also, we found that the digital photography activities can be understood as the interactions between human and non-human actors in the perspective of Actor-Network Theory (ANT).
This study examines the practice of maeul community media as follows; Who, why, and how the role of participants is related to the operation of maeul community media, and the participation requirements. For this purpose, the maeul newspaper published in rural areas was approached by ethnographic Research, and participation observation, in-depth interview, and content analysis were performed. In conclusion, it was confirmed that harmonious participation of residents is the core condition of maeul community media practice. Residents' participation is based on the requirements of spontaneity, openness, talent donation, and local relationship. Spontaneity is a desire and effort for the activation of the community as a member of the local community. Openness is related to the operation structure of maeul community media where anyone can freely participate. Talent donation is based on their experience, knowledge, and expertise as a concrete practice of resident participation. Local relationship is the network of community that connects spontaneity and practice, and the operating structure of maeul community media. These requirements should be operated positively to ensure the function of maeul community media and sustainability.

The purpose of this study is to explore the culture of clothing of subgroups among adolescents by residence. In this research informants were selected by selective sampling and ethnographic methods such as field work depth interviews and open-ended descriptions were employed to interpret their culture of clothing. The results were followed. First our adolescents enjoyed the popular song as leisure and these popular culture was their inspiration source of style. Second adolescents were grouping the Kang-Bouk and the adolescents group preferred the style of popular singers and the Kang-Nam adolescents group preferred the musical competence of singers and specific type particularly Hip-Hop style. And in acception pattern of fashion style the Kang-Bouk groups accepted the recent fashion style continuously and wanted to be striking while the Kang-Nam groups accepted the various Hip-Hop styles and sought to comfort and suitability of that style. Third to consider the connotations of marketing the Kan-Bouk groups shopped on the street perceived as fashionable among peer groups and sought to the lower price but the Kang-Nam groups used the shops selling their original ip-Hop style without regard to the price and sites. Although there existed a two years' difference between the first and the second research(1996-1998) subgroups among adolescents according to the residence have had their own culture of clothing constantly. And a segmentation tendency by clothing behavior within the same adolescent generation is revealed more visibly.
The purpose of this study is to research and systematize Jeju dialectal words about Jeju traditional housing culture and study them on the basis of lexical semantics. Vocabularies related to the names of the traditional thatched-roof house and its partial names, thatching, supplementary facilities, housing culture, etc. were categorized after recording in an ethnographic way from Seongeup folk village which is Important Folklore Material no.188, and studied them linguistically. Informants are fore people who were born and bred in Seongeup-ri and they are over 70. They have a lot of experiences building thatched-roof houses from a young age. There are 9 different categories - the kind of the house, partial names, exterior space, materials, tools, words about actions, doers, units, and folklore. Some new words related to Jeju traditional housing, which had not been in the list of Korean dictionary, could be introduced as a result of the study. For example, rice which are made when doing earth work is called Heukppap and adzes used to sharpen stones are called Dolchagui. The finding of These new words hopefully contribute to the promotion of Korean language as well as enrich vocabulary on housing. Furthermore, the collected vocabularies and oral materials could be used as important educational materials to comprehend Jeju traditional housing culture.
In this paper we draw from recent theoretical discussions of fan culture and the new media technologies to explore how online communities contribute to new forms of K-pop fandom. We suggest that these online sites play an important role in setting the new stage of dissemination and dialogue of K-pop knowledge, through which particular forms and spaces of online fan culture are being created and sustained. Moreover, these web-based communities challenge the existing concepts that have embraced interrelations between culture, consumption and technology. Based on an empirical study of YouTube, carried out using netnographic methods, this study tackles the following questions: how fans construct themselves as Korean pop fans through the online activities; how they exchange information and opinions of Korean stars; and, what meaning they extract from online file-sharing activities.

This study focuses on the fact that a OTT service is vigorously used for smart phones, and suggests a design of method to trace the experiences of watching television contents. For this purpose, we developed logging functions and embedded them into existing OTT service application to record flow and pattern of watching context. This paper suggests a log file format which can accurately and precisely record watching actions of users per-second methodology rather than former per-minute methodology. Moreover, this study shows that the application can trace watching attitude according to occurring events by characteristics and playing modes of realtime broadcasting, VOD, advertisement contents. In addition, based on the result of the study, this paper discusses educational, operational meaning of the method such as methodological application in mobile ethnography field or survey for total screening rate.
This paper will investigate how animated practice can be a research form as practice-led research in an ethnography approach. This practice-led research will explore the issue of the construction of contemporary identities (based on the strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) and in particular, the Korean youth culture and identity, exemplified, for example, creation of 'avatars' in the virtual characters of animated online games such as Massively Multiplayer Online Role-playing Games (MMORPGs). In this proposed discussion, I will argue that the sudden period of change in contemporary Korea bears some resemblance to the Victorian era as explored in gothic fiction (e.g. Jekyll and Hyde). In this sense, my animation investigates the connection between the fictional Jekyll and Hyde and a real murder incident by a young Korean boy, which actually happened on the 16th November 2010, in SouthKorea.I will, therefore, construct this practice-led research to obtain the primary data consisted of online and offline practices in 'social ethnography'. These practices engage with specific Korean youth identity, comparing the 'avatar' with the real lives of participants. However, this paper will only focus on the (ethnographic) research process and strategy, using animated (visual) practices, rather than giving the meaning of the specific case of 'Korean-ness'. Eventually, I will explore the four different animated representations as it presents the distinctive animated realties or documentaries by online and offline practices. My intention is to visually interpret the issue of 'Korean-ness' within its socio-cultural context, adapting the convention and code of Jekyll and Hyde concept into an animated documentary in the 'virtual' world (auto-animated documentary by recording avatar interviews and online game footages) and the 'real' world (self-created animated documentary, based on real people and events).
