Fashion Cultural Products Design using Folk Belief Symbols - Focused on Changsuengs and Sotdaes - (민속신앙 상징물에 의한 패션문화상품 디자인 연구 - 장승과 솟대를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to design fashion-cultural products by reviewing the symbolism in Changseung and Sotdae, which are folk belief sculptures. This study was performed by literature reviews of Changseung and Sotdae in order to look into the characteristics of folk belief and traditional culture, and the designs were developed from the symbolism extracted from Changseung and Sotdae with photoshop CS5 and illustrator CS5. The Symbolism of Changseung and Sotdae were as follows: First, Changseung and Sotdae express the 'symbiotic world view' that human beings need to devote one's life to nature. Second, original materials were saved in order to achieve the 'pursuit of essence'. Third, 'simple esthetic expression' was symbolized through the undivided condition between art, religion and life. And fourth, 'empathic humor' was seen through the basis of emotional sense of affinity. The first concept of design development was 'Pursuit of Essence', which was inspired by the characteristics of 'symbiotic world view' and 'pursuit of essence'. Changseungs were expressed as simple and abstract, and Sotdaes as simplified and modern by symmetrical and rotating copy. The second concept, 'Touch of Humor' was inspired by 'simple esthetic expression' and 'emphatic humor'. The face of Changseungs was exaggerated in a humorous ways and Sotdae was developed as sub-motives. The items for the fashion-cultural design were T-shirts, bags, and scarves. Total of 24 items were developed with 4 differently styled designs for each concept. This study was based on basic culture and attempted to diversify the traditional culture items. It hopes to raise the value of traditional culture, and furthermore help build up national competitiveness.

Characteristics of "Glam" Fashion in David Bowie's Costume (데이비드 보위(David Bowie) 복식에 나타난 글램패션 특성)

  • The purpose of this study is to devise a wide range of expression and direction in fashion by analyzing the wardrobe of David Bowie, a musician who represents Glam Rock, for "glam" characteristics. Research was done using dictionaries of musical terms, dictionaries of attire terms, internet, papers and books published in Korea and abroad and other materials. The results of this study showed four characteristics, and it can be summarized as follows. First, resistance refers to the deviation from the norms set by a mainstream society. The resistance in Glam Rock was expressed in depreciative and anti-social characteristics, and Punk elements were expressed by using studs and metallic materials. Second, androgyny in David Bowie's costume expresses the innate nature of gender by freely integrating or tight silhouette costumes. Third, the fantasy in Bowie's costumes is a concept as opposed to what is real and is expressed by using avant-garde and playful expressions. Distorted, exaggerated and avant- garde expressions express decorative and bizarre fantasy by using the images of an astronaut. Fourth, the folklore in David Bowie's costumes uses the patterns and images of different cultures, and is expressed as through integration of exotic components, including the usage of costumes with Oriental colors and shapes. Furthermore it represents geometric shapes and curves, using the images of Kimono.

A Study on Women's Costume Design of the Miao in China (중국 묘족 여자복식의 의장학적 연구)

  • The Miaos have their own peculiar and luxurious transtional culture a they have experienced repeated fusion into and resistance againt the Han Race or the chinese in their long and old history. And the traditional culture of the Miaos is abundant and diverse in several respects. Because it has taken root in foundation of their simple and native environment. it is embracing abundant and diverse contents. They largely used as the theme of patterns factual materials such as natural objects easily accessible in the natural environment. those related to marratives reflective of ethnicity, animals and plants symbolic of auspicious omen, peace, happiness and good harrest with prosperity and abundance. And they not only crossornamented natural patterns and geometrical patterns by combining them but also geometric patterns alone. It can be seen that Miaos represented patterns with exaggerated formation, overlapping and modification and the comprehensive, fomation of natural forms, abstract formation etc. Seeing the ethnic costume of Miaos investigated in these several respects by the standard of contemporary beauty it is thought that it has the infinite possibility of being used in contemporary fashion design on account of the characteristic of almost perfect costume.

A Study on the Images of Gold Color in Contemporary Fashion (현대 패션에 나타난 금색이미지에 관한 연구)

  • Symbolizing holiness, wealth and power, golden color was most effective to express the absolute power of royal family and aristocratic society as well as the beauty of magnificent and brilliant authority. Such golden color was understood as the artistic color formed in the dictatorial society as well as the society under the rule of absolute monarch. Thus, it has been used in the costume that symbolizes nobleness, holiness, brilliancy, ethnicity and future-oriented property. In this sense, the image of golden color shown in contemporary fashion was analyzed as follows in this research: First, showing the future-oriented image, golden color expresses avant-garde, cyber and cosmic future-oriented image by using diverse new materials which introduce the state-of-the-art technology sense in addition to metallic textile. Second, getting hint from the ethnic costume of many countries around the world such as brilliant embroidery using golden-thread, ornament with exaggerated technique such as gold foil, mark and character in peculiar tint, the ethnic image of golden color expressed the peculiar color or materials of ethnic costume, handicraft details, etc in golden color. Third, since golden color is expressed in ostentatious image to which elegance and luxuriousness that looks like the work of haute-couture costume of royal family or sensuality that voluptuously expresses the beautiful body line of women are added, the viewers are enchanted or attracted.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the culture on the Traditional Wedding of the West Gyeong Nam District. The traditional wedding was characterized that the bridegroom visited his bride's house accompanied by his honored guests(上客) and the marriage ceremony was to be held in day time, and then the bridegroom became a son-in-law and stayed with the family for a few days. The bridegroom returned to his home, leaving his bride behind. After a certain period, the bride came to her husband's home as a daughter-in-law. The Traditional Wedding costume of the bridegroom were Samo-Gwandae. The coat (outside uniform) was blue Danryeong ornamented with two cranes figured Hyong-Bae and Heukgackdae. In case Samo-Gwandae was not available, Dopo or Durumakie could be substituted and they put on shoes in this case. A bridegroom put on Mokhwa his feet and under the Samo, and he also put on Nambawie or Bokguen. He put on Dopo or Haeng-eui(行衣) or Durumaki under the blue Danryeong. The bride put on Wonsam and Chokduri or Hwagwan on her hair. In case Wonsam was not available, Chima Jogori style or imitational Wonsam, which was roughly sewed with red cloth and blue cloth contained in the Honsuham (Box of wedding treasure), could be substituted. She put on Hyang-guen to protect her body against the coldness and to hide her face.

Influence of the 1960s Anti-Fashion on the Ethnic Fashion (1960년대 저항 패션이 민속풍 패션에 미친 영향)

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the Ethnic Fashion which is influenced by the Anti-Fashion in 1960s. Anti-Fashion as Hippie style had an effect on high fashion in the 60s-70s and which was restored in the early 90s are ethnic and folk-lore style. The influence that the Anti-Fashion has had on the Ethnic Fashion is summarized as follows. At the Ethnic Fashion in 60s-70s: First Europian romantic style that is velvet doublet breecheese race cuffs ruffle flounce race jabbot embrioderd blouse frilled blouse Victorian mode and Pre-Raphaello style. Second handicraft ornaments style & peasant style what are embroidery weaving variaty ornaments tie-dye patch work smocking beads & bell paisely print peasant blouse dundle skirt long skirt to clinging layered look floral print dress and shepherd-ness style. Third folklore style that is Oriental mao-suit harem pants & Indian pants caftan monk robe Afgan vest burnoos dhoti pants Hindu robe Red Indian fringe head band feather ornaments Red indian embroidery & weaving body painting gaucho poncho and serapi. At the Ethnic Fashion in 90s.: First Europian classical romantic style that is Victorian style Pre-Raphaello style ruffle & race decorations and velvet materials. Second peasant look& handicraft orna-ments what are floral print long skirt to cling-ing uneven stitches top stitchings patch work embroidery crochet and tie-dye. Third folklore style that is Red Indian style South East mode is sarong skirt & Nheru jacket Tibet & Mongolian style South America style and gypso style.

  • This ethnography is on the passage ritual clothes in Incheon province. This ethnography invatigates in two villages of people who has same family name -Family 'Cheung' (from Young-il) in Yeonsoo-dong and Family 'Lee'(from Cheun-joo) in dongyang-dong- in August to December 2003. The object of examination is 80's and 70's old women who have lived and had lived up to recent in two villages. (grand mother Sung, Cho, Cheung and yoon) The clothes of passage ritual are Baenaeoht is the first clothes of the newborn baby(swaddling), A wedding ceremony clothe is the clothing for the coming-of-age ceremony, Honryebouk is the clothing for wedding, Sangbouk in the clothing for mourning, shroud is the clothing for the dead, sacrificial robes. The result of ethnogrphy is the passage ritual clothes in Incheon Province similar with other Provinces in aspect of the name and the form and wearing of the clothes. there are remarkable differences in making method from making by oneself to purchase(swaddling$\cdot$shroud), westernize(clothes for wedding and mourning), simplification (sacrificial) between ritual for their parents and their husband and children.

Folk Costume on Acculturation Phenomenon-Focused on Spain and Latin America- (문화이식현상에서 나타난 민속의상-스페인과 라틴 아메리카를 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to consider what influences the Spanish folk costumes had on the ones of Latin America on Acculturation Phenomenon during Spanish reign over Latin America. As a method of doing this, the researcher compared and analyzed the style of dress such as color, material, design and accessories of Spanish folk costumes and the ones of Latin America, classifying them by male costumes and female ones respectively, by studying reference books, literature, and photographs related to the folk costumes and visiting this areas. The results of the study were summarized as follows; First, we can find out Spanish folk costumes were accepted to the folk costumes of Latin America just as it were. Second, Spainish folk costumes have been developed to be suitable for the climatic, geographical cultural characteristics of Latin America. Third, the folk costumes of Latin America become much simpler by the influence of Spainish culture. Fourth, as a result of cultural contact, mixture with Spainish culture, native folk costumes of Latin America had more various style. In conclusion, Spanish government over Latin America had given a cultural homogeneousness and colonial culture of Spain and traditional culture of Latin America have been mixed and created the present unique folk costumes of Latin America. Therefore good understanding and use of the sense of beauty of folk clothes of Latin America influenced by Spain culture will be helpful to enlarge creativeness of design of modern fashion.

  • This study is on the esthetic characteristics of Christian Lacroix's haute couture works. The materials for the study are the precedent studies, the related literature, and the photographs of the works and the interview articles in fashion journal at home and abroad. The result of this study were finds three esthetic characteristics in his works and fashion philosophy; historic, ethnic, and hybrid sense. First, the historic sense, Christian Lacroix's biggest characteristic, is influenced by his major studies, but is not a revival from the past itself but a new characteristic based on borrowing and reinterpreting the images created by introducing and compromising the historic elements. Second, the ethnic sense is influenced by the growing background in his childhood and can be characterized as compromise among the multi-national design features. It is certified by the contrasting images, styles, expressions, materials, ornament elements, and so forth with the worldwide ethnic senses centered by the southern France and Spain. Third, the hybrid sense as the essential characteristic shows the uniqueness in his design by not only combining the modern materials, technologies, and futuristic emotion but also liberally compromising and associating the emotions based on a mixture among the follows; the historic representative styles, the foreign materials, the diversity between the Eastern and Western culture, and all elements, details, trimmings In the fashion design.

A Study on the Development of Vest Design Using Retro Image (레트로 이미지를 이용한 패션 상품개발 -베스트(Vest)를 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this research is for confirming that fashion study has to do with industry through the developing of fashion goods which is related to a trend as a cultural code. Recently fashion design trend is focused on 'retro', 'Retro' is the one of the important trends in this century not only fashion but also cultural industry, Therefore, in this research, the processing about development of decorative vest design as fashion goods was showed by using retro image. For this process, research steps were as follows : 1. Confirming the meaning of 'retro fashion'. 2. Studying about the flow of retro fashion from 1960s to 1990s. 3, Finding the characteristics of retro fashion design and the image through abroad and domestic collections from 2000 to 2003. 4. Designing and making vest using new concept from the leading images. Through this processed, it was find that retro fashion design had three images : vintage image, ethnic image and romantic image. Then three vests were made by a concept 'a piece of handicraft' using handcraft technique such as beading, patch-work, fringing, scratching, stitching, mixing which were used in retro fashion design characteristics.
