  • We carried out mathematics diagnostic tests for all first year engineering students at C University in Daejeon in 2008, covering precalculus and basic calculus. Then we divided into two classes such as regular and supplementary classes. The supplementary class students are lower 13% students. Then we gave extra classes for these students to support their basic and elementary calculus skills. As a result, these supplementary students received a meaningful accomplishment at the final exam. This paper analyzes the results and effects of various types of supplementary classes such as education by level, and proposes some strategies to enhance mathematics learning, particularly for under achieving first year engineering students.

  • Improving the design ability of idea developing and creative problem solving should be started from the primary school. Design education in the primary school should be not education for design but education by design. It helps students can naturally understand the basic concept of design and experience the process of activities. Therefore primary educational circle use the term of 'Design-related activities', or 'Design-Based Education'. It can be applied to variable themes of mathematics, science, music, society as well as Art. On the Basis of these literature review, the traditional design education as a part of the art education is analyzed in two aspects of its contents and behaviors. The contents in design education involve aesthetic·symbolic, useful·functional, and scientific·technological area. And, the basic design behaviors are classified with 'know', 'perceive', 'inquire', and so on. This concept becomes the analytic frame of the present condition of design education in Korean primary school. Through the analysis, it is found that the portion of scientific·technological area in contents and 'inquire' related behaviors are relatively very low. Also, the planning and teaching methods for leading children's opportunity of creative expression are found inadequate. This study proposes the potential capability and the integrative contents of design education in primary school.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among an achievement, a meaningful learning orientation and a reasoning ability. 149 third grade middle school students were tested. The achievement test was designed to measure students' interrelated understanding of genetics. A modified LPQ(Learning Process Questionnaires) was used to measure students' meaningful learning orientation. Students' reasoning ability were identified by the short version GALT(Group Assessment of Logical Thinking). Correlations between different variables were examined. Regression analyses were conducted to examine the predictive influence of meaningful learning orientation and reasoning ability on the achievement of students. And ANCOVA was used to identify the interaction of these variables on students' achievement. Students did not understand well enough the concepts of genetics. Meaningful learning orientation indicated a significant gender difference. Girls tend to do more meaningful learning than boys(p<.05). Many students(48.76%) were at the transitional cognitive level. Results of correlations indicated that students' attainment of meaningful understanding was significantly and positively related with a meaningful learning orientation and a reasoning ability. But there was no significant correlation between students' meaningful learning orientation and reasoning ability. Regression analyses indicated that learning orientation and reasoning ability were able to predict the achievement of students. They predicted better on solving genetics problem than understanding genetics problem. Results of ANCOVA showed that the test scores of genetics were significantly different according to not only learning orientation levels but also cognitive levels. But, there was no interaction between learning orientation and cognitive levels. Within the transitional and formal cognitive level, the meaningful learners performed significantly better than the rote learners on the test of genetics.

  • The aim of the thesis is to examine why children comics books are not popular in Korea and how to analyze the causes for solution. The way for solving the problems is to make academic events and make a public opinion about children comic books. In the subject, we introduce children comic books and define them, actually when we do that, we have realized that most people misunderstand children comic books so we should change them to take the adventagement. Next, Through academic events, we have enumerated the variety of opinions. Mainly, we have concluded about the improvement of the misunderstanding comics. There are some prejudices of children comics. First, we are in a need of comics, that are very creative and sensitive. They are very important to develop children's character. Second, Korean people think, The most important part of the literature is a letter more than pictures, That causes not to develop motion pictures, cartoons and even plays. Third also, creative children comics don't effect not only studying but also children violence. Fourth, We can't ignore the prejudice of the comic books from parents, The main reason why comic books aren't popular in korea is the University entrance examination system that makes student like a studying meachine. The conculusion of this study is that We will educate Korean people to understand comic books and redefine them for development the comic books.

  • The purpose of this paper is to describe the true meaning of smooth curve and to let people understand the smooth curve by way of velocity. It is true that it is not easy for us to perceive smooth curve because when there are no cups in the curve and the shape of the curve looks smooth, we often perceive it is smooth curve. However, even when the shape of curve looks smooth, it happens that it is not smooth curve. When the particle moves on the curve, depending on the velocity, it can be smooth curve or not. That is, even though the shape looks smooth, when the velocity is discontinuous or it is 0, it is not smooth curve. Therefore, this paper shows that it is important to understand and to teach smooth curve by way of velocity. In other words, when parameter of path for the smooth curve is taught in the calculus of high school, it needs to be understood by way of velocity. Finally, this paper tries to suggest that we need to shift our paradigm in teaching of smooth curve from fixed curve to dynamic curve.
