In this study, we present simple microfluidic approach for the synthesis of monodisperse microcapsules by using droplet-based system. We generate double emulsion through single step in the microfluidic device having single junction while conventional approaches are limited in surface treatment for the generation of double emulsion. First, we have injected disperse fluid containing FC-77 oil and photocurable ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate (ETPTA) and water containing 3 wt% poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as continuous phase into microfluidic device. Under the condition, we easily generate double emulsion with high monodispersity by using flow focusing. The double emulsion droplets are transformed into microcapsules under the UV irradiation via photopolymerization. In addition, we control thickness of double emulsion's shell by controlling flow rate of ETPTA. We also show that the size of double emulsions can be controlled by manipulation of flow rate of continuous phase. Furthermore, we synthesize microcapsules encapsulating various materials for the application of drug delivery systems.
Lysozyme crystallization was performed by using flow-focusing chip in droplet-based microfluidic system. Water-in-oil droplets were formed in the system and collected on petri-dish and cross type mold. Liquid-liquid reaction of lysozyme and sodium chloride occurred in the droplet and crystals were observed through microscope. Solution pH was varied as 4.8 and 7.2. Crystals of polyhedron and plate-like shape were obtained at pH 4.8, while needle structure crystals formed at pH 7.2. Lysozyme in single droplet for two pHs were crystallized with constant or decreased droplet size. However, crystals at pH 4.8 were only obtained in the droplet of which size was increased by the interaction between droplets. Droplet volume did not change at pH 7.2 and crystals formed in both droplets.
Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) have recently been in the spotlight for their applicability in point-of-care diagnostics and environmental material detection. This study presents a double-sided printing method for fabricating 3D-μPADs, providing simple and cost effective metal ion detection. The design of the 3D-μPAD was made into an acryl stamp by laser cutting and then coating it with a thin layer of PDMS using the spin-coating method. This fabricated stamp was used to form the 3D structure of the hydrophobic barrier through a double-sided contact printing method. The fabrication of the 3D hydrophobic barrier within a single sheet was optimized by controlling the spin-coating rate, reagent ratio and contacting time. The optimal conditions were found by analyzing the area change of the PDMS hydrophobic barrier and hydrophilic channel using ink with chromatography paper. Using the fabricated 3D-μPAD under optimized conditions, Ni2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, and pH were detected at different concentrations and displayed with color intensity in grayscale for quantitative analysis using ImageJ. This study demonstrated that a 3D-μPAD biosensor can be applied to detect metal ions without special analysis equipment. This 3D-μPAD provides a highly portable and rapid on-site monitoring platform for detecting multiple heavy metal ions with extremely high repeatability, which is useful for resource-limited areas and developing countries.

With the development of micrototal analysis systems (${\mu}TAS$), which is a result of enhancement of MEMS technology, rapid progress has been achieved in medical and biological research. The study of lab-on-a-chip (LOC) devices, which are types of ${\mu}TAS$ and which integrate the functions of mixing and analyzing tiny amounts of samples and reagents on one chip, has actively progressed. An LOC comprises microfluidic components such as micromixers and micropumps. Because the flow in a microfluidic system is generally laminar, it is very difficult to efficiently mix and feed fluid reagents. This paper presents the design and the method of fabrication of an MHD micropump for mixing fluids. By using this micropump, fluids are simultaneously mixed and pumped; this is achieved by coupling the Lorentz force and force exerted by an electric charge moving in an electric field.
Particulate matter (PM) is designated as a group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization (WHO). In South Korea, the health threat caused by PM is the most serious level internationally. Therefore, in order to solve the urban PM problem, it is important to develop the technology that can control PM efficiently. In this study, CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation was performed for PM pre-filter (type 1-3 with different PM collecting room) to develop a high-efficiency PM collecting device. The complex flow field and the local flow phenomenon inside the PM collecting device were understood with CFD simulation by changing the shape and size of the pre-filter. The PM removal performance can be described with flow rate through the device and PM removal efficiency. The type-1 pre-filter with 5x5 size collecting room was confirmed to have the highest efficiency. Based on the analysis results, the optimal type of pre-filter could be developed and it would be applied as an element technology included in the PM collecting device.

A numerical analysis has been carried out to examine the flow characteristics and the collection efficiency for fine particles in a cyclone using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique. The cyclone with the cylinder diameter of 60 mm has been considered for the investigation of the particle collection in a relatively smaller cyclone with somewhat higher inlet air velocities. Fundamental air flow patterns for different inlet velocities have been calculated and then the motions of particles of different sizes have been obtained. The calculated collection efficiencies for fine particles are compared with the experimental results, which shows a good agreement. The current result can be used for the design of cyclones with high collection efficiency.

Thermoplastic microfluidic devices are used in BioMEMS for medical and biotechnology applications, such as gene extraction, DNA analysis, and virus detection. In this research, a simple fabrication protocol with a commercially available pneumatic hot press is proposed and demonstrated for polycarbonate microfluidic devices. Microfluidic channels with a width of 200 ㎛ and a height of 10 ㎛ were designed and machined onto a brass plate as a mold insert using a CNC milling machine. The resulting microfluidic channels on the mold insert were assessed and found to have an actual width of 198 ㎛ and a height of 10 ± 0.25 ㎛. The microfluidic channels were replicated on a polycarbonate sheet using the proposed replication technique at 146℃ for 20 minutes under a constant load of 2400 kgf. The devices were then naturally cooled to 100℃ while maintaining the same pressure. It was found that the microchannels were successfully replicated in the polycarbonate, with a width of 198 ㎛ and a height of 10.07 ㎛. The proposed replication technique thus offers the rapid mass production of high-quality microfluidic devices at a low cost with a process that, unlike conventional photolithography systems, does not require expensive equipment.
Recently, due to the increase in the fine dust, regulations on PM generated from diesel cars are strengthened. There is a growing interest in diesel particulate filters (DPFs), a post-treatment device that removes exhaust gases from diesel vehicles. Therefore, one of the enhancements of the DPF efficiency is to reduce the pressure drop in the DPF, thereby increasing the efficiency of the filter and regeneration. In this study, the effect of cell density, channel shape, wall thickness, and inlet channel ratio of 5.66" SiC and Cordierite DPF on the pressure drop in DPF was investigated using ANSYS FLUENT simulator. As a result of the experiment, the pressure drop was smaller at 300 CPSI than 200 CPSI, and the anisotropy and O / S cell showed less than Isotropy by pressure drop of about 1,000 Pa. As the porosity increased by 10% the pressure drop was reduced by about 300 Pa and as the wall thickness increased by 0.05 mm, the pressure drop was increased by about 500 Pa.

This study was conducted with the aim of developing a venturi-type air supply system for a microbubble generator. In order to determine the influence of the varying geometry of the venturi tube on the flow characteristics, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was performed using the commercial CFD software ANSYS CFX-15. Furthermore, in order to elucidate the effects of variation in major design dimensions such as the air supply hole size, position of holes, and number of holes on the air supply characteristics, two-phase multiflow CFD analysis was performed. The analysis results showed that the starting point of expansion on the venturi tube with 0.75 is the best hole position and that the air supply hole size and the number of holes are linearly proportional to the amount of air.
Increase of blood viscosity significantly changes the flow resistance and wall shear stress which are related with cardiovascular diseases. For measurement of blood viscosity, microfluidic method has proposed by monitoring pressure between sample and reference flows in the downstream of a microchannel with two inlets. However, it is difficult to apply this method to unknown flow conditions. To measure blood viscosity under unknown flow conditions, a microfluidic method based on micro particle image velocimetry(PIV) is proposed in this study. Flow rate in the microchannel was estimated by assuming velocity profiles represent mean value along channel depth. To demonstrate the measurement accuracy of flow rate, the flow rates measured at the upstream and downstream of a T-shaped microchannel were compared with injection flow rate. The present results indicate that blood viscosity could be reasonably estimated according to shear rate by measuring the interfacial width and flow rate of blood flow. This method would be useful for understanding the effects of hemorheological features on the cardiovascular diseases.
