Development of Reading Comprehensive Strategy Program for Underachieving Gifted Students (중학교 영재학생의 미성취 문제 해결을 위한 중재방안으로서의 읽기 이해 전략 프로그램 개발)

  • This study handled underachievement issue of gifted students by developing and validating educational programs as a solution, or relief, of their academic underachievement problems. The proposed educational program was designed to enhancing reading comprehension ability of gifted students with underachievement. Based on comprehensive literature review, this study found that key issues of underachievement have to do with learning strategy, and also that learning strategy was established as 'reading comprehension strategy.' Considering diverse reading comprehension models and strategies suggested by preceding studies, the reading comprehension strategy program in Korean was customized for underachieving gifted students on the middle school level. The effectiveness of the reading comprehension strategy program as a solution to underachievement of gifted students was explored by applying the developed program to 36 identified students after school twice a week for 6 weeks, conducting pre- and post-tests that were selected to measure their reading comprehension abilities, collecting their academic achievement data before and after the intervention by this study, and interviewing students. As the results of this study, reading metacognition ability, reading comprehension skills, and school grades of gifted students with underachievement were meaningfully improved as a group. On the individual level, 12 identified students, exactly one third of the whole group of underachieving gifted students, showed so improved academic achievement as we can say they overcame underachievement based on the Supplee's definition.

Sustaining Effect of Reading Comprehensive Strategy Program for Underachieving Gifted Students (중학교 미성취영재를 위한 읽기 이해 전략 프로그램 효과의 지속성 탐색)

  • This study examines the sustaining power of program effects of Reading Comprehensive Strategy Program, for underachieving gifted students in middle schools, which was developed and applied by Choi(2015). The study was a kind of follow up study of Choi(2015) as this study traced and collected all data from the same samples that Choi(2015) used since Choi(2015) stopped his program and data collection from 31 participants for 9 to 12 months. As the results, Among 11 subjects, who overcome underachievement through Choi(2015)'s Reading Comprehensive Strategy Program, 5 subjects could consistently maintained their performance level. However, 3 subjects could not maintain their performance and went back to the underachieving level, and another 3 showed instability as they went up and down around the border line. And among 20 subjects, who could not help the underachieving level through Choi(2015)'s program, 5 subjects could reach the achieving level. But 15 subjects still remained in their underachieving level. In conclusion, we may say that at least 16.1%(5 among 31) of underachieving gifed students could overcome their underachiving issue by Choi(2015)'s program even in the most pessimistic view, and 51.6%(16 amoung 3) in the most optimistic view. After all, at least about 50% cases could not be explained only by cognitive factors such as absence of reading comprehensive strategy. We suggest that we should handle the underachieving issues of gifted students by more comprehensive approaches.

  • 미성형은 수지 점도가 높거나 유동경로가 너무 제한적이거나 혹은 용융 수지가 일찍 고화되어 금형내에 수지가 완전히 충전되지 않고 냉각 및 고화되는 현상을 말한다. 일반적으로 수지의 유동성이 부족하기 때문에 금형 전체에 수지가 미치지 못하여 일어난다고 생각되는 수가 많으나 반드시 그것만이 아니고 그 외에 여러 가지 원인이 있을 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 실제 현장에서 미성형이 발생한 제품을 대상으로 이를 해결하기 위해 여러 가지 공정조건을 바꾸어서 시뮬레이션을 여러번 반복해 봄으로써, 사출압력, 금형온도, 사출속도, 용융수지온도와 같은 공정조건들이 미성형에 미치는 영향을 각각 시뮬레이션을 통하여 고찰하여 보았다.

A Comprehensive Model for Identification of Underachieved Gifted Children in Elementary Schools (복합판별 과정에 의한 초등학교에서의 미성취 영재 판별)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive model to identify underachieved gifted children in elementary schools by utilizing multiple methods. From March 1st, 2006 through September 30th, 2006, we developed and applied a 6-step comprehensive identification model for underachieved gifted children by examining 1980 children attending S elementary school located in Daegu Metropolitan City, starting from the first step of teacher nomination to the last step of committee's final decision. As a result, 4 students were identified as underachieved gifted children. For comprehensive and appropriate identification, we adopted, adjusted, or developed several standardized tests, teacher nomination form, parental questionnaire, self-report checklist, and school achievement tests, which were fine-tuned in the application process of this identification model. Based on this study, we suggest that a comprehensive identification model for underachieved gifted children in public elementary schools consist of 6 steps: a) teacher nomination, b) simplified standardized testing, c) student's self-report, d) multiple standardized tests, e) qualitative analysis, and f) a committee decision for the final identification.

Comparative Analysis on Learning Strategies, Motivation, Beliefs in Ability, and Problem Solving Patterns of the Gifted Achievers and the Gifted Underachievers in Elementary School (성취영재와 미성취영재는 어떻게 다른가?: 학습전략, 동기, 능력신념, 그리고 문제해결성향의 차이분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine whether gifted achievers and gifted underachievers differ in their learning strategies, motivation, beliefs in ability, and problem solving patterns. The sample for the study consisted of 68 gifted achievers and 34 gifted underachievers who were in 5th and 6th grades in elementary schools in the metropolitan area. Gifted achievers and gifted underachievers showed statistically significant differences in all aspects using the independent sample t-test. In addition, the discriminant analysis correctly classified over 77.5% of the sample as either gifted achievers or gifted underachievers using the variables used in the study, indicating factors related to learning strategies can be effective measures to identify gifted achievers and underachievers. Especially, extrinsic motivation and problem solving patterns were the most discriminant factors in these two groups. The implications of the study related to the identification and education of the gifted underachievers were discussed in depth.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore a possibility finding gifted underachievers who have high spatial ability, but low verbal ability in elementary science field. In Korea, because teachers used to refer students' academic achievement only when they recommend gifted students, underachievers used to be excluded. The participants are 5th-grade students in elementary school. In this research, developed teaching materials were given to students to find underachievers. Results of spatial ability test, verbal ability test, science academic achievement, non-verbal test, and interviews about light propagation concept were obtained. By analyzing results of this study, we found that spatial ability is the most important factors to understand light propagation. And there are some features to understand light propagation according to spatial ability. Lastly, this study shows the possibility of non-verbal test to find gifted underachievers with high spatial ability and low verbal ability.

  • Recently, with the development of interactive communication system, demands for video live streaming service has increased. Live streamers generate revenues from donations, but existing laws are inadequate to handle these donations. Problems arise when minors donate because they have the right of revocation. In the case of donations that request benefits in return, legal characteristics and results are different from unilateral donations. If minors exercise their right of revocation, live streamers must pay back without getting proper compensation for their services. In this paper, we detect the characteristics of bilateral contract in live streaming donation, indicate the harms that live streamers can get, examine precedents and donation processes focusing on cases when minors can not exercise the right of revocation due to deception, and propose revisions that can protect the streamers without invading minors' rights. Through academically identifying ambiguous legal situations and presenting dispute prevention procedures, this paper can bring positive impacts on the online industry.
