  • An attempt is made to predict the wear behavior of ion-nitrided metal, when wear arises from asperity interactions. The analysis demonstrates that wear mechanisms are not inconsistent with observed behavior, indicates and approaches to a better appreciation of the effects of such factors as nitrided layer formation and surface topographical features. It was found on ion-nitriding that penetration rate and case development are faster and wear properties of the final product are more improved than conventional gas and salt-bath methods of nitriding.

  • Frictional characteristics with the change of loading method and normal stiffness at dry sliding surfaces were experimentally and theoretically evaluated in this study. For the study, a ball-on-disk typed test rig was built and implemented, which allowed a proper selection of loading mechanism and normal stiffness of the test rig. Loading method were varied from dead weight to pneumatic cylinder and spring loading, and the normal stiffness was varied by a spring of different stiffness. Test results showed that frictional characteristics at various loading methods were different even though the operating variables were the same. Discrepancy in the frictional characteristics, such as coefficient of friction and fluctuation in the normal load, were explained by the change in dynamic parameters of the test rigs. Results also showed that coefficient of friction, which defines as a ratio of frictional force divided a normal load, could be differently evaluated in the calculation when fluctuation in the normal load was significant.

  • In the present study, we develop an analysis module to be applicable to design of sliding thrust bearings. The pressure equation is solved by using the finite element method. Average lubricant temperature is obtained from using the energy balance method. The module developed has been applied to three types of thrust bearing, such as tapered-land thrust bearings of angular and diamond types, and tilting-pad thrust bearings. Effects of the dam of the tapered-lad thrust bearings have also been investigated. It has been seen that the tapered-land thrust bearings of angular type result in the highest load capacity, while the tilting pad thrust bearings result in the lowest lubricant temperature. It has also been seen that the dam in the tapered-land thrust bearings increases both the load capacity and lubricant temperature.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the early-age behavior and performance of precast pavements constructed by replacing existing asphalt pavements for an intersection in urban bus only lanes. The monitoring items included level differences between asphalt pavement and precast panels at the beginning and ending locations of the precast pavement, level differences and joint widths between precast panels, precast panel settlement, and skid resistance of the panel surface. At a certain time after the construction, the diamond grinding method was applied and its effect was also investigated. The monitoring results showed that as time went by, the panel level, joint width, settlement, and skid resistance were not much varied. That implied the stable sustaining of external loads by the precast pavements. In addition, it was verified that employing diamond grinding could reduce the level differences between precast panels.

  • The cost of repairing the deterioration of concrete structures due to corrosion of the reinforcement steel has been the prominent figure in the maintenacne of the reinforced-concrete infrastructures. As an alternative material to steel reinforcement, the use of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bar in concrete is being actively studied for the high resistance of chemical environment and high strength to weight ratio properties of GFRP. However, there remain various aspects of GFRP properties that still need to be studied before the standard design criteria can be established. One of the imminent issues is the bond between GFRP and concrete. In this study, the bond-behavior of GFRP bars in concrete is investigated via the pullout test with varying parameters: surface condition of GFRP bars and concrete compression strength. And the local bond-stress model of GFRP rabars with applying monotonc load was also derived from the present test.

  • There is a kind of abnormal noise known to come from the stick-slip mechanism induced by frictional impulses during the sliding of two polymeric plates. In this work, quantitative analysis of abnormal noise is carried out based on experimental results. Some combinations of polymer plates, such as an ABS base-plate contacted to ABS, PP, MIPS, and POM plates, which are well-known materials used in home-appliances, are studied to obtain the best combination of polymer plates in order to reduce the abnormal noise. For the experiments, a rig for the test was set up and a methodology was proposed. In addition, the effects of the surface roughness of the plate, the normal loading force, and the relative sliding speed between the two contact plates were evaluated in order to understand the reason for the abnormal noise. Through this experimental work, the optimal combination of materials was ABS/POM system to reduce the noise in real industrial applications.

  • This study is performed to evaluate the physical and mechanical characteristics of an acryl polymer concrete that is developed as an overlay material for cement concrete slabs and pavements. Various laboratory tests including viscosity, flow, compressive strength, flexural strength, tensile strength, linear shrinkage, thermal expansion and thermal compatibility tests are performed. It is observed from the laboratory tests that the acryl polymer concrete developed in this study satisfies all the requirements suggested by ACI guideline. In addition to the laboratory tests, an accelerated performance testing (APT) is conducted to validate the performance of the acryl polymer concrete. During the APT, no significant distresses are observed until 15,903,939 cycles of equivalent single axle loading is applied. Finally, a 10mm thick overlay with the acryl polymer concrete is applied on top of an old deteriorated concrete pavement to evaluate field performance. Right after the field construction, skid resistance, noise and roughness are measured. The skid resistance and noise level have been significantly improved while the roughness is increased. Periodic investigation for the field study section will be conducted to evaluate the long-term performance.

The research method of this study includes problem analysis of existing lining boards a constant load test and a fatigue test. The results of this study are as follow : 1) the suggested new lining board improves the function and reduce slipperiness than existing lining boards. 2) the strength of the new SRC lining board is analyzed as superior than existing lining boards from the results of constant load test and fatigue test.

  • The isolation system is installed at the base of a structure for reduction of the earthquake damage to the structure. In the 1970', when the laminated rubber bearing(LR type) is developed, the isolation system is put in practice. And recently a new isolation system(SR type), including the laminated rubber bearing with the friction plate beneath, is developed. In this thesis, a study on the base isolation effect, for various of the isolation system and structure properties, is performed. The results of this parameter study show that the isolation system can reduce the earthquake damage of the building structures significantly. As the period of isolation system increases, the isolation effect increases and converges to zero damage. As the number of story increases, the isolation effect reduces. It is found that SR type isolation system is more effective than LR type because SR type base isolation system reduces acceleration, drift and total displacement.

  • In recent times, surface texturing methods have been widely applied to reduce friction and improve the reliability of machine components such as parallel thrust bearings, mechanical face seals, and piston rings. In this study, a numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the effect of uniformly spaced hemispherical dimples on the lubrication characteristics of a slider bearing using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT. The pressure distributions, load capacity, leakage flowrate, and friction force are strongly affected by the dimple diameter and the number of dimples. In particular, the load capacity and friction force decrease linearly with the dimple density whereas the leakage increases. These results can be used for designing the optimum dimple characteristics in order to improve the lubrication performance of slider bearings, for which further studies are required.
