  • Materialistic values can be a important variable to understand Koreans' psychological well-being and mental health. This study aimed to validate the Korean version of the Material Values Scale (K-MVS)(Richins & Dawson, 1992). In study 1, we performed confirmatory factor analysis(CFA) to ascertain the three factor model of the original MVS using 417 Korean undergraduate student data(sample 1). The CFA confirmed the three-factor model of the MVS. Yet, three items that yielded low factor loadings in this study as well as in other MVS validation studies were excluded from the final model. In study 2, content, construct, and concurrent validity of the K-MVS were examined with 650 undergraduate student data(Sample 2). We also tested measurement invariance across two groups(i.e., college student group of Sample 2 and employee group of Sample 3). The result revealed that the three-factor model of the K-MVS hold true across the two groups. Lastly test-retest reliability was calculated with 408 female college student data(Sample 4) that filled out K-MVS twice within 6 months. These findings suggest that the K-MVS is a reliable and valid measure for assessing materialistic values in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate familism and materialism of the Korean-Americans. A total 370 subject completed structured questionnaires. Major conclusions of this study are as follows: First, the Korean-Americans are found to support familism below average. But subgroup differences (according to age, for example) were discovered. Second, the Korean-Americans are found not to support materialism. But, like familism, subgroup differences by several variables were discovered. Third, among the Korean-Americans, the urban Koreans and the rural Koreans, the rural Koreans are found to support familism most strongly. But theres no difference between the Korean-Americans and the urban Koreans. The Korean-Americans are found not to support materialism.

  • The present study aimed to emprically verify the materialistic pursuits process of undergraduates by applying the escape theory of materialism(Donnelly et al., 2016). Among the six steps of Donnelly's model, the first step is percieving that the fall short of high standards of life, as measured by external contingencies of self-worth. The second step is blaming the self for falling short of standards, as measured by self-discrepancy. The third step of high aversive self-awareness is measured by low stability of self-esteem. A total of 465(203 male and 262 female) college students participated in the online survey and the model was tested using structural equation model. We found that the relationship of external contingencies of self-worth and materialism was mediated by self-discrepancy and there was a sequential mediation effect of self-discrepancy and the stability of self-esteem. The direct effect of external contingencies of self-worth on materialism was also significant. This study is meaningful in that it used the escape theory to emprically verify the materialistic pursuit process of Korean undergraduates living in a meritocratic society.

As for the levels of hedonic shopping values, the students in Japan and Ulsan had the highest of all, whereas for the levels of utilitarian shopping values, those in Ulsan had the highest. For the levels of materialism, the students in Ulsan had the highest of all and those in Seoul had the lowest. And three scales in the materialism had a different influence on hedonic-utilitarian shopping values.

  • Consumer researchers' growing interest in consumer experience has revealed that many consumption activities produce both hedonic and utilitarian outcomes. The personal shopping value also has both hedonic and utilitarian dimension. This article describes the effect of socio-economic variables and materialism on hedonic and utilitarian shopping value. 820 middle, high and college students in Seoul and Ulsan were surveyed. A moderate degree of positive intercorrelation between hedonic and utilitarian shopping value support the trend of consumption ambivalence. Materialism is positively related to hedonic and utilitarian shopping value. While age is negatively related to utilitarian shopping value, it is unrelated to hedonic shopping value. The mean scores of hedonic and utilitarian shopping value in Ulsan is higher than in Seoul.

  • Minimalism is an increasingly popular lifestyle in which people deliberately seek to live with fewer possessions. However, little scientific research has been done to examine the relationships between minimalism, social value, and happiness. Two recent studies have investigated whether critical components of minimalism, such as subtraction and decluttering could lead to changes in social values and happiness. In Study 1, the participants were presented with pictures of unstable Lego structures for which they were asked to create ideas to resolve problems, either through adding new supports or removing the existing ones. Participants with a stronger tendency to use subtractive transformations reported higher happiness scores. In addition, higher scores in intrinsic value preferences were correlated with higher levels of happiness. In Study 2, cuing minimalism or consumerism using pictures led to changes in materialistic values, motivation for social engagement, and reported happiness scores. These results imply that minimalism as an alternative lifestyle can contribute to social wellbeing and increased happiness. Limitations and implications for future studies are discussed.

The research results are summarized as follows. 1. The scores to measure ethical consumptions level of the adolescents was ranged from 2.87 to 3.08, which were relatively low. 2. The ethical consumptions(fair-trade product consumption, donation and giving, local consumption and eco-friendly consumption) in demographic variables were found to have significant differences depending on their religion, perceived social class, father's education and mother's education. 3. The result of hierarchical regression analysis indicated that consumer education experience, the eco-friendly values, materialism, saving, experiencing mass media on affecting the fair-trade product consumption. The major variables affecting the ethical consumptions in the donation and giving were materialism, consumer education experience, experiencing mass media and the eco-friendly values. The significant variables affecting the local consumption were the eco-friendly values, consumer education experience, materialism, experiencing mass media and saving. The major variables affecting the eco-friendly consumption were the eco-friendly values materialism.
