  • This study examined the multicultural awareness, cultural sensitivity, and characteristics of multicultural experiences affecting the intercultural communication skills among Korean nursing students. The study participants were a total of 353 nursing students who had completed one or more clinical practice courses and were in 1 University and 2 Colleges. A self-assessment instrument was used. The descriptive statistics, t-test, one way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and simple and multiple regression were used to analyze the data. Statistically significant differences in the intercultural communication skill were observed in multicultural education, foreign friends, proficiency in English, stay in foreign countries, and length of stay in foreign countries. The intercultural communication skills was correlated with both multicultural awareness and cultural sensitivity. Multiple regression analysis showed that the multi-cultural awareness, multi-cultural education, and proficiency in English could explain 41.3% of the variances for the intercultural communication skill. Simple regression analysis also showed that the length of stay in foreign countries explained 2.5% of the intercultural communication skill among nursing students, who had stayed in foreign countries. Therefore, nursing educators should improve their multi-cultural awareness and develop various multi-cultural education programs, consider living abroad, and improve their language proficiency to strengthen nursing students' intercultural communication skill.

Method: The research design for this study was a non-equivalent control group, non-synchronized pre- and post-test. The experimental group (n=28) took 13 weeks of the multicultural course, while the control group (n=28) received only regular classes over the same period. Pre- and post-tests were done to identify the effects of the program. The data were collected using self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using the PASW 18.0 program. Results: All indices of multicultural acceptability and competency in the experimental group were significantly higher than that of control group after the program, except for two: universality (a measure of multicultural acceptability) and multicultural awareness (a measure of multicultural competency). For data analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation, and mediating and moderating effect analyses were performed. Bootstrapping was implemented to verify the mediating effect of the model developed herein. Results: Positive correlations among cultural empathy, multicultural efficacy, and cultural competence were noted. Multicultural efficacy showed a significant mediating effect on the relationships between cultural empathy and cultural competence. However, there was no moderating effect. Conclusion: In order to enhance the cultural competence of child care teachers, it is necessary to develop a strategy that can promote their cultural empathy and multicultural efficacy. Furthermore, these results will ultimately enhance the role of child care teachers, thus contributing to the normal growth and development of multicultural children.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the factors affecting job satisfaction of PACU (post-anesthesia care unit) nurses in the context of job stress, organizational culture and professional identity. A total of 149 nurses participated in the cross-sectional, descriptive study suing a structured questionnaire. Job stress in pay and treatment category, innovation-oriented culture, relation-oriented culture, and professional identity were positively correlated with job satisfaction (r=.373, p<.001; r=.507, p<.001; r=.559, p<.001; r=.544, p<.001). The factors related to job satisfaction were professional identity (${\beta}=.391$, p<.001), relation oriented culture (${\beta}=.302$, p<.001), innovation oriented culture (${\beta}=.209$, p=.004), which accounted for 48.7% of the variance in job satisfaction. Professional identity was the most significant predictor of job satisfaction. Thus, in order to enhance the job satisfaction of nurses in the PACU, it is necessary to develop an education program that can improve professional identity and apply strategies for fostering relation and innovation oriented organization culture.
