  • The results obtained by survey on 599 respondents of different age groups for preference of 84 prepared foods were subjected to statistical principal component analysis, factor analysis, analysis of variance, scheffe verification, and discriminant analysis so as to find a structure of preference for foods. The results may be summarized as follows: 1. The results of the factor analysis indicate that 84 prepared food items may be classified into 3 groups and that by knowing an indvidual's preference to one prepared food, one can presume his preference to the others in the same group without carrying out actual test. 2. The results from an analysis of variance showed that most of primary school children extremely liked snacks, seniors liked Korean cooking, primary school children and collegians had weaknesses for western cookings while kindergarden children and adults over 50 years old disliked them.

  • This study presents a comparative analysis of the calligrammic poetic dictions shown in the poems of the French poets Guillaume Apollinaire and Paul Eluard and in those of the Korean poet Lee Sang. They were adventurers in the avant-garde movement who used experimental techniques that led to futurism, expressionism, cubism, dadaism, and surrealism. They applied a typographic technique that combined pictorial arrangements of fonts, shapes of compositions and between lines, letters of the alphabet, mathematical symbols, and graphical elements, such as circles or lines, to make up a poem that also looked like a painting. Their works, valued as visual lyric poems, break up language and combine anti-poems. They rejected traditional poetic dictions or grammar, but developed a paratactic poem that freely uses letters and symbols. Their calligrammic poetic dictions arouse dynamic images like space extension. Lee Sang's calligrams seem like abstract paintings that apply geometric symbols like those used in technical drawings. As a result, crossing the boundaries between language and pictorial art by using experimental materials and techniques, their poems deconstruct the creative standards of rational and traditional poetic dictions, creating an adventurous, expressive technique. Their calligrammic, avant-garde poems introduced a new spirit of art into both French and Korean modern poetic literature.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the narrative correlation of nonverbal signs found in Charade. Charade, by using nonverbal signs, provides information about the character's psychological change, his or her relationship with others, and the places where they stay. The study of Charade, then, has to be approached considering not only the transmission of messages through nonverbal signs but also its signification. This study has analyzed the narrative and formation process of the subject that triggers the subject's activity by taking narrative semiotics to the film Carol (2015). As the status of women is represented by the mise-en-$sc{\grave{e}}ne$ at this time, this study aims to examine such a fact through Charade, which belongs to the realm of mise-en-$sc{\grave{e}}ne$. In this study, nonverbal signs that are used in Charade are drawn based on the nonverbal communication theory. The result of analyzing the texts showed that the use of interior decoration was outstanding in the process of expressing the status of female subjects. The use of gaze was noticeable in the process of expressing the acquisition of female subjects' power. Besides, it should be noted that the use of nonverbal signs such as accessories, territoriality, or gesture, was worthy of attention. It was confirmed that such nonverbal signs play an important role in the formation of subjects and configuration of narrative transformation.

The semiotic approach to landscape analysis was used for understanding landscape characteristics owing to implication of psychological process. Streets of the study were located at Ganguri and Opori on Gang-Gu Harbor and the signboard semiotics of streets were divided into 17 meanings according to the business category. The analysis of this category was applicable on semiotic meaning. The research results are as follows: First, the main part of the business category was food. 56.3% of Ganguri and 61.8% of Opori had the name of food businesses. Second, the semiotic characteristics of Gang-Gu harbor streets mainly mean place name or friendly name. The food business could be related to the principal products of this district which are called Young-Duk Great Crab. Also, the place name could be from symbolic meaning of the crab and the friendly name could be connected with increasing the sales. Finally, the semiotic approach to landscape does not fully cover the streetscape but could be useful for understanding a skeleton of harbor streetscape.

The purpose of this study is to interpret interrelation between sign and space design and analyze Korean contemporary space how to universalize traditional conception and attitude in design. The process of this study is illustrated as follows: At first, this study contains basic concepts and theories of semiotics and discusses the possibilities of semiotic approaches in spatial designs. Since the most outspoken theorist in this field can be found in writings of C.S. Peirce, American philosopher, the theoretical basis for this research Is taken from the Peirce's Semiotics. Secondly, this research tries the conceptual approaches based on traditional thoughts of Koreans formed with the philosophic background occurred with the universe, religion and the nature. And then, it approaches for the typical characteristics of Korean traditional space to interpret the meaning and adopt the triadic structure of sign. The structure is classified in status, icon, index, and symbol to analyze the Korean contemporary space design. Finally, it examines the expression structure of the nature of Korea that is succeeded in contemporary space design as the semiotic analysis of the application examples ; and studies the examples that try to set and solve the concept of space in modern society as the real issues in our cultural situations.

The authors apply semiotic analysis methods such as two-stage meaning structure and critical discourse analysis. The research subjects are School uniform advertisements of both in South Korea and in the UK. Through this study, women objectification, the power imbalances between men and women, and child erotica were revealed, and also the uniforms of the meaning and value turned out to be distorted. • From the 20th century, as international trade increases with the development of transportation and industries, a standard pictorial language to facilitate exchanges with others in different countries became necessary. However, it is not easy to have a full agreement on a standard pictorial language among different cultures. Therefore, the evaluation of standard pictograms has been the main discussion issue of the 150 since the organization's establishment in 1947. Although the 150 has a test method, 1509186, the participating countries do not follow the test because it does not reflect individual seeing mechanism for decoding pictogram which varies with his/her own experience. This study focuses on the theory of graphic symbol and seeing mechanism, and suggests what should be taken into account in the standardization process. In Chapter 2, the study investigates whether there be any cultural shock as we live in the net culture, and defines what reality is from a digital aesthetics view. What should be studied further is also presented, and a new method for revised international standard by means of analyzing seeing mechanism of decoding pictogram is suggested.
