  • We need problem solving abilities based on the information abilities in information-oriented society. New curriculum is demanded by new technology and circumstance to need the core competencies. Korea Association of Information Education has studied new curriculum and suggested new plans that contents of information education classified by 'Software', 'Computer System' and 'Convergence Activities.' Therefore, we studied on 'Problem Solving' topic of the 'Software' section of first grade to ninth grade. In this paper we firstly categorized 'Problem Solving' as 'Problem Comprehension and Analysis', 'Data Management', 'Strategy Establishment for Problem Solving', 'Problem Solving Method Seeking and Development' and 'Examination of Problem Solving Method.' We nextly suggested the achievement goals, teaching-learning methods and evaluation methods of 'Problem Solving' topic. We expect that the achievement goals and teaching-learning methods we suggested about 'Problem Solving' topic will contribute to training talented individuals.

  • The smart education has the goal of enhancing the capability of learners in the 21st century and especially address the improvement of the problem solving capability. This smart education based on the growth of smart devices and the effect of dramatical spread requires the ability of problem solving using the smart technology in accordance with time change. As the problem solving learning is a model used mainly for improving the capability of problem solving, this study develops the problem solving learning model focusing on the teaching-learning activity using the smart devices and also applies this model to the school field. As a result, the favorable response that using the smart devices is effective to the problem solving can be obtained. This study can contribute to achieve the goal of the smart education, and later can be effective to the successful smart education in the school field.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze how a peer mentoring method affects students' problem solving abilities and class satisfaction in the context of high school quadratic curves and provide implications for teaching and learning mathematics. For this study, seventy six 11th graders in the natural sciences track participated in the peer mentoring method. After finishing the teaching method, Problem Solving Abilities Questionnaire was collected for analysis of pre-test/post-test experiments and Class Satisfaction Questionnaire was also gathered. The results show that the mentoring method positively impacts on participants' problem solving abilities and class satisfaction because its comfortable learning environments, individualized learning contents, and unconstrained learning processes motivate them through ways to improve their communication. According to the results, it is to address practical implications applied in teaching quadratic curves in high school with the value and importance of mentoring methods.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze that The arithmetic and algebraic word problem solving skill, strategy preference, and assessment ability of elementary preservice teachers is investigated using a statistical methodology. The research findings are as follows. First, elementary preservice teachers demonstrated logical and delicate problem solving behaviors in arithmetic and algebraic word problem solving. And elementary preservice teachers prefer to create a formula and table strategy in problem solving of the arithmetic question. Second, there was meaningful difference in the math and english elementary preservice teachers' appreciations with significant level of 0.05. And there was not meaningful difference in the 1 and 4 grade elementary preservice teachers' appreciations with significant level of α=0.05. Results of the study suggest that teachers education course need to improve elementary preservice teachers' word problem solving skill, strategy preference, and assessment ability in the arithmetic and algebraic.

  • The purpose of this study is to verifying the mediating effects of religious problem solving on the relationship between religious orientation and marital adjustment of married immigrant christian women. The subjects of study were 302 married immigrant women(185 protestant, 117 catholic) and survey research was conducted by using religious orientation scale, religious problem solving scale and marital adjustment scale. The data analysis was performed by using SPSS 25.0. The study results are as follow. First, it showed negative correlation between the extrinsic religious orientation and marital adjustment of married immigrant christian women and intrinsic religious disposition showed positive correlation. Second, religious problem solving style had partial mediating effects on the relation between religious orientation and marital adjustment. Subsequent studies require qualitative analysis of the religious lives of married immigrant christian women.

  • Data collection is crucial to the process of statistical problem solving since it influences the quality of statistical data. However, there is little instruction on data collection in the Korean mathematics curriculum. In this study, we examined how the data were collected and how the data collection method was taught in the Korean mathematics textbooks for 3rd and 4th grades. As a result, the data appeared in these textbooks were collected by using a variety of methods, including surveys, experiments, observations, and secondary data collections. There were not enough instructions on experiments and observations, compared to surveys and secondary data collection. Additionally, as each textbook works with a distinct contents while teaching data collection, it is expected that there would be variations in the levels that students learn in relation to data collection. Based on these findings, we draw some discussion points to determine how to improve the mathematics curriculum in order to effectively teach data collection in the elementary school.

  • The purpose of this study was to search for effective strategies on teaching open-inquiry by comparing students' and teachers' recognition of its difficulties and helpful strategies. This study focused on the cases of science high school students and their teachers, who carried out open-inquiry to participate in KYPT. This research was conducted through participant observation, questionnaires, and interviews. The research findings were as follows: students stated that planning and doing experiments were the most difficult parts, whereas teachers viewed that their students had difficulties in analyzing data and making a conclusion. With respect to the effective strategy, students stated that they gained many ideas from peer discussions although they have had to carry out their individual tasks. On the contrary, teachers thought that reference materials and the discussions with teachers were most helpful. There were clear differences between students' and their teachers' recognition toward open-inquiry and the gap needs to be closed. Consequently, it would be useful to guide students to form teams and to spend more time in peer discussions especially when doing experiments and to encourage teachers to understand students' actual difficulties and needs.

  • Probability plays a very important role in modern society as an essential tool for solving various kinds of problems from our real life or scientific province. However, most of precedent studies on probability pointed out that many students had difficulties in understanding the nature of it, and that probability teaching method in the classroom is easily led only to calculation system, which is isolated from practical applications. In this paper, I make a close study further onto these themes, by analyzing the 8th grade textbooks through these following questions; how do the textbooks deal with calculation of probability that certain two events occur at the same time? On the practical basis, how do they make use of probability as a problem-solving instrument in both actual life and scientific fields? After these, I try to extract some features and issues of probability teaching method in current Korean textbooks.

  • In this study, we developed Internet Based Problem Solving Learning Model based on difficulty of internet based problem solving teaching and learning. For these, firstly we developed 7 Steps Problem Solving Model applying ICT-EUS into proper step. Next, we developed Internet Based Problem Solving Learning Model reflecting 7 Steps Problem Solving Model and searched an outline and characteristics of support system to apply the model into instruction. The teaching and learning model is composed of four steps of (1) design (2) preparation (3) teaching and learning execution (4) management, and 7 Steps Problem Solving Model is the core of teaching and learning execution step. The 7 Steps Problem Solving Model and Internet Based Problem Solving Learning Model are not for functional use but for general use. In other words they can be used commonly in all subjects.
