  • In this paper, a dispersive anisotropic perfectly matched layer(APML) is proposed using piecewise linear recursive convolution(PLRC) for finite difference time domain(FDTD) methods. This proposed APML can be utilized for the analysis of a nonlinear dispersive medium as absorbing boundary condition(ABC). The formulation is simple modification to the original AMPL and can be easily implemented. Also it has some advantages of the PLRC approach-fast speed, low memory cost, and easy formulation of multiple pole susceptibility. We applied this APML to 2-D propagation problems in dispersive media such as Debye and Lorentz media The results showed good absorption at boundaries.

  • In this study, an efficient sequential bridging method to characterize both the particle size effect and concentration effect on the mechanical properties of nanocomposites at high volume fraction is suggested through a molecular dynamics(MD) simulations and micromechanics of composites materials. The Young's modulus and the shear modulus of the nanocomposites at various particle radius and at 12% volume fraction were obtained from MD simulations and multi-inclusion model was adopted to describe both modulus in continuum model. In order to describe the particle size effect, an additional phase, effective interface, was adopted as characteristic phase and the non-dilute concentration effect which appears at 12% volume fraction was describe via the variation of the elastic modulus of the infinite medium. Both the elastic modulus of the interface and infinite medium were fitted into functions of particle radius for the applicability of the present bridging method at various particle radii. Using the present bridging method the elastic modulus of the nanocomposites was efficiently obtained with accuracy. In addition, the effect of the interface thickness and modulus on the elastic modulus of the nanocomposite was investigated.

  • In general, existed vibration energy harvester is optimum in electronic energy gleaned from vibration energy with fixed single frequency, because it is using resonance. But it is limit in electronic energy gleaned from ocean wave energy with variant frequency. This paper studied for width band vibration energy harvester that obtains electronic energy from ocean wave with infinite vibration energy in order to solve it. It is composed of buoy to occur resonance in the center frequency of ocean wave energy and the vibration system to occur resonance in the same frequency. As a result, existed vibration energy harvester using resonance maximized electronic energy conversion efficiency in single frequency, while proposed width band vibration energy harvester has merit that maximized electronic energy conversion efficiency in ocean wave with variant frequency.

  • Dokdo is a volcano edifice originating from an oceanic island that was formed around 3 million to 2.2 million years ago, and it consists of Dongdo(eastern island) and Seodo(western island). Even though Dokdo is a small volcanic island, Dokdo has infinite potential value and significant economic, social, scientific, and technical aspects due to its resources, ecological and territorial value. In addition, it is of national interest with regards to the dispute with Japan over the dominium of Dokdo. A need to evaluate the ground stability of Dokdo, especially in Dongdo, has been seriously raised recently due to the various cracks caused by the progressive weathering and corrosion. This study dealt with the geology and geological layers of Dokdo and identified the status of ground cracks as the previous research to evaluate the ground stability of zones of concern in Dongdo. Also, this study analyzed the relationships between physical and mechanical properties with rock types. The results showed that the values of rock properties in Dokdo are lower contrary to the general rocks in Korea, and tuff was especially affected by the weathering and corrosion.

  • A volume integral equation method (VIEM) is applied for the effective analysis of plane elastostatic problems in unbounded solids containing single isotropic inclusion of two different shapes considering composite fiber volume fraction. Single cylindrical inclusion and single square cylindrical inclusion are considered in the composites with six different fiber volume fractions (0.25, 0.30, 0.35, 0.40, 0.45, 0.50). Using the rule of mixtures, the effective material properties are calculated according to the corresponding composite fiber volume fraction. The analysis of plane elastostatic problems in the unbounded effective material containing single fiber that covers an area corresponding to the composite fiber volume fraction in the bounded matrix material are carried out. Thus, single fiber, matrix material with a finite region, and the unbounded effective material are used in the VIEM models for the plane elastostatic analysis. A detailed analysis of stress field at the interface between the matrix and the inclusion is carried out for single cylindrical or square cylindrical inclusion. Next, the stress field is compared to that at the interface between the matrix and the single inclusion in unbounded isotropic matrix with single isotropic cylindrical or square cylindrical inclusion. This new method can also be applied to general two-dimensional elastodynamic and elastostatic problems with arbitrary shapes and number of inclusions. Through the analysis of plane elastostatic problems, it will be established that this new method is very accurate and effective for solving plane elastic problems in unbounded solids containing inclusions considering composite fiber volume fraction.

  • Acoustic load generated by rocket propulsion system is one of major dynamic loads during lift-off phase so that it causes the structural failure and electronic malfunction of payloads. Acoustic loads can be greatly reduced by an appropriate acoustical design of nose faring structures. This paper deals with the acoustical design of the nose fairing structure for launch vehicle. It is well known that a honeycomb sandwich structure is a poor sound insulator because of its high specific stiffness. In this paper, the sound transmission characteristics of four kinds of honeycomb structures for noise fairing were investigated by means of numerical and experimental ways. In order to estimate transmission loss, infinite plate theory by Moore and Lyon and statistical energy analysis (SEA) method were used. The predicted results showed a good agreement with measured ones. These enabled us to determine a proper core material for nose fairing, which shows good sound insulation performance per weight.

  • Guided waves can be used for the inspection of long range pipelines. Surface corrosion is often found as a major defect type in pipelines. The reciprocity relation is a well-established theorem by which one can simplify complicated mathematical expressions. The approach has been already applied to plate and half-space structures to obtain the closed-form solutions of scattered amplitude. However, results for the case of cylindrical structures have not been reported yet. In this paper, the scattering of torsional waves, which is widely used in commercial applications, is explored by the reciprocity theorem approach. Obtaining closed-form solutions of the amplitudes of propagating waves is much simplified by using the reciprocal relation. The scattered amplitudes for elliptical and rectangular defect shapes are calculated with respect to defect depth and width, at frequencies between 0 and 500 kHz. The amplitude shows the periodic result as a function of frequency. The derived closed-form solutions can play a significant role in quantitative signal interpretation.

  • Ionic liquids, composed of organic cations and either organic or inorganic anions remain liquid over a wide range of temperature. ionic liquids are a new group of solvents or extractants of great interest as a potential 'green solvent'. Ionic liquids are gaining wide recognition as novel solvents in many research fields, such as chemistry, chemical engineering, electrochemitry, etc. However, not much researches have been done related to biotechnology using ionic liquids, while a lot of researches have been performed in chemistry. The merits of ionic liquids in bioseparation technology are originated from some unique properties of ionic liquids, such as negligible vapor pressure, good thermal stability, controllable viscosity and miscibility with water and organic solvents. An appropriate selection of ionic liquid for bioprocesses requires basic knowledge on physicochemical properties of ionic liquids. This review gives a brief overview on the application of ionic liquids in biotechnology, including bioconversion and bioseparation.
