  • This study based on international input-output model shows various static analyses of the effects by estimating the intermediary goods' trade volume that affects the industrial production. When concluding tariff removal between Korea and Japan, as intermediary goods import increases, Korea's trade balance deficit with Japan is expected to grow more than before. However, Korea's increase in export to the world is the largest benefit Korea can earn from tariff removal between the two countries.

  • This study aims to analyze the effects of the smart technologies acceptance on global supply chain innovation and export performance in Korean small and medium trading companies. As the world prepares for the advent of the 4th industrial revolution the level of smart technology acceptance by Korean small and medium trading companies has not yet reached the level that is compatible with the change of international paradigm. In this respect, this study aims to promote the acceptance of smart technologies and suggest a need of more practical policy for securing international market competitiveness through innovation of global supply chain structure of Korean trading companies. According to the empirical research results, the smart technology acceptance had a significant effect on both the internal supply chain innovation and the export performance. Also, the external supply chain innovation significantly affected export performance. These results suggested that Korean trading companies need to be more active and positive in accepting smart technology so that they can gain more competitive advantage in the 4th industrial revolution era.

  • This study is to analyze the effects of both the bilateral FTA and a home and its trade partner's FTAs on the trade with 62 country-pair panel data over the period of 2003-2013 using the gravity model and the spatial autoregressive model. First, the study analyzes how the bilateral FTAs affect the trade using the gravity model and the spatial model. Next, the article analyzes how the home and its trade partners' FTAs affect their trade using only the spatial model under controlling the bilateral FTA. The empirical results are summarized as the followings: first, the spatial mode fits well more than the gravity model in analyzing the relationship between the bilateral FTA and trade. It implies that the spatial spillover effect of FTA is important in the international trade with FTA. Second, the bilateral FTA plays a role in expanding the trade between or among the FTA members as proved by the previous studies. Third, the more the home and its trade partners' FTAs, the more the bilateral trade are extended. Fourth, with the bilateral FTAs, as the home and its trade partners enter into more FTAs, the bilateral trade reduces due to trade diversion effects. In conclusion, this study provides a political implication that in order to increase the trade volume, a country enters into as many FTAs as possible because the effects of the bilateral FTAs would decrease.

  • This study aims to find implications of Korean FTAs and to suggest policy recommendations to facilitate the utilization of FTAs based on the field survey of more than 1,000 trading firms According to the survey, most of the trading firms have utilized FTAs more than once and had agreed that the FTAs have contributed to expansion of their business and trade with partners. However, still a number of firms responded that they have never used FTAs. Even those who are utilizing FTAs expressed difficulties in conforming to the complex rules of origin verification processes and lack of practical information on how to use FTAs. Therefore, government policies need to be more focused on elevating FTA utilization rate and meeting the practical use of FTAs by trading firms. In addition, trading firms were found to express preference to potential FTA partners with large economies in the East Asia and were in the opinion that future FTA agreements should be approached in a way that can reflect the practical interest of the firms.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the current situation of foreign direct investment of Korea based on GVC (Global Value Chain) perspective and to presentthe policy direction. From GVC perspective which comprehensively describes the world's increasing FDI and imports/exports phenomenon since the 2000s, the level of internationalization of Korea is excessively concentrated in trade. Therefore, the expansion of foreign investment (OFDI, IFDI) is urgently needed. The results of regression analysis using data from 50 countries and the international comparison of major countries including Germany, Switzerland, Singapore, etc, showed that the level of foreign direct investment of Korea is 20 to 30 years behind compared to those major countries. Therefore, exploiting the benefits of trade and foreign direct investment at the same time is needed to increase the level of GDP per capita.

  • A trade logistic informatization system under Open Systems Interconnection(OSI) includes a Port Management Information System, a Maritime Information System, and an Export and Import Batch Processing System. These have made a great contribution in the creation of more convenient and efficient management for the logistics industries in our country. However, this management is exposed to the technological problems of networks due to the explosive use in the sending and receiving of e-documents. For our country to grow as a center for port and logistic information, we should make the best use of the control systems using networks and further advance the export and import logistic systems. Therefore, this study aims to propose management systems for a composite network and an invasion detection system for efficient management of an e-trade network under OSI. Methods to rationalize the internal organizations such as coordination of organizations and human resources according to alloted network functions, commissions and arbitrary decisions, and reorganization of relevant regulations are not discussed here. This study looked at trade network under OSI from the aspect of practical business affairs and presented a basis for further interpretation.

  • This study reviewed the examples on analyses of the potential impacts to waste management, due to the recent trends of waste trade regulation, and summarized an analysis strategy of the impacts. As a result, a desirable analysis may begin with reasonable estimation of recent waste amounts and flows, and reasonable prediction of the future trends of waste amounts. Then, it is effective to list various key factors and derive future scenarios of the impacts, as well as employ the traditional viewpoints focusing on waste material flow or environmental regulations. The applicable analyses for each scenario can be largely divided into qualitative and quantitative methods. Due to a high uncertainty in the recent international situations with entailing possible innovative economic changes, qualitative methods may be considered in advance, and then quantitative techniques may be utilized to predict gradual changes at relieved uncertainty of the situations. Based on this review so far, proper methodology and procedures for the impact analysis were suggested on recent waste trade conditions in Korea. Given existence of the recent uncertainties such as the health and economic crises, the analysis preferably focused on deriving strategic scenarios with respect to various aspects, and suggested analysis methods applicable to each scenario.

  • This paper qualitatively describes logistics behaviors of 113 companies located in Daegu-Gyeongbuk by considering various characteristics such as business location, trade volume, cargo types and the possession of company's own warehouse. A logit model is developed to investigate how predictor variables affect these companies' inclination of utilizing Third Party Logistics Provider(3PL). The estimation results of 102 effective data points show that among the four predictors the location of company's HQs (HQADD) and trade volume (TRDTEU) significantly increase company's tendency towards utilizing 3PL while the remaining two variables (BULK, WAREHS) imparting statistically insignificant influence. The results indicate that those companies located outside the region tend to implement a strategy of using more 3PL and also that the larger the trade volume of the company the more 3PL the company uses to improve the efficiency in logistics.

  • This paper analyzes the effects of trade on demand for labor of trading firms in Korea. We apply system GMM methodology to estimate the effects of imports and exports on employment of Korean manufacturing firms using firm-level data from the Survey of Business Activities of Statistics Korea between 2006 and 2014. According to our estimated results, for firms with high-productivity, exports have a positive and significant effect on the labor demand, while other firms do not show any such significant effects. Furthermore, our results show that offshoring mitigates the positive effects of exports on employment, since tasks within the firms can be relocated abroad. On the other hand, an increase in imports reduces demand for labor because labor is replaced with low-priced imported inputs. Also, when firms partake in global outsourcing, the negative effects of imports are mitigated as those firms expand their production by enhancing their efficiency in the process of offshoring. Therefore, our results suggest that it is important to consider heterogeneous firm productivity as well as offshoring in analyzing the effect of trade on labor demand of firms.
