  • This experimental study was conducted to evaluate the in-plane and out-of-plane seismic performances of an unreinforced masonry walls (URMs) strengthened with prestressed steel-bar truss systems developed in the present investigation. The truss systems were installed on both faces of the walls. All the wall specimens were subjected to lateral in-plane or out-of-plane cyclic loads at the fixed gravity stress of 0.25 MPa. The seismic performance of the strengthened specimens was compared to that measured in the counterpart URM. When compared with the lateral load-displacement curve of the URM, the strengthened walls exhibited the following improvements: 190% for initial stiffness, 180% for peak strength, 610% for accumulated energy dissipation capacity, and 510% for equivalent damping ratio under the in-plane state; the corresponding improvements under the out-of-plane state were 230% for initial stiffness, 190% for peak strength, 240% for accumulated energy dissipation capacity, and 120% for equivalent damping ratio, respectively. These results indicate that the developed technique is very promising in enhancing the overall seismic performance of URM.

  • The commonly used method to secure the stability of reinforced retaining structure is the reinfocement of backfill with connection attached or unattached to the geogrid type wall. Laboratory model tests for both cartes were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of geogridreinforcement, length of reinforcement inclusion, failure envelop, and the relationships between the face wall displacement and vertical settlement. The bearing capacity of each case was also determined. According to the model test results, geogrid-reinforced rigid wall is very effective for increasing the bearing capacity and reducing the displacement of retaining wall. The observed sliding line of model test is similar to the theoretical one.

  • BO-105 helicopter applies hingeless rotor hub system and blade root uses a flexure of hingeless rotor hub system. So bending stiffness reinforcement for flexure was conducted for preparation of whirl tower test using BO-105 blade. Bending moment of flexure area was calculated with FE modeling of section shape for stiffness reinforcement of flexure and thickness of composite material for reinforcement was chosen. Flexure bending stiffness reinforcement was conducted and bending stiffness measurement test was performed before and after bending stiffness reinforcement. And the test data are compared with analysis results.

  • Unlike external bonded steel plate or carbon fiber, the external unbonded strengthening using hi-strength bar has some advantages in speed and simplicity of installation. It is not required surface preparations and not affected by environmental conditions. A set of nine laboratory tests on RC beams strengthened using the hi-tension bars are reported. Anchoring pin developed in former research is installed at the end of beam to connect the hish-tension bar to RC beam. The test results strengthened by hi-tension bars are compared with those of non-strengthened specimens. The main test parameters are the cross-sectional area of the high-tension bar, distance of stirrups and condition of supports. Test results show that the beams reinforced are superior to reference specimens, especially for the strength and deformation capacity. Also, shear resisting effect of hi-strength bar can be confirmed in the specimens which have lack of stirrups.

  • Heavy rainfall intensity may cause shallow slope failures and debris flow by rill erosion and scour on land surface. The paper represents the difference between native soil (weathered soil) and reinforced soil, which is mixed by hardening agent with flyash as main material, for investigating experimental findings of rill erosion and erosion. Results obtained from artificial rainfall simulator show that erosion rate of reinforced soil mixed with hardening agent is reduced by 20% because an amount of eroded soil on slope surface is inversely proportional to the increase of soil strength. For example, rainfall of 45mm (at the elapsed time of 25mins in rainfall intensity of 110mm/hr) triggers rill erosion on native soil surface, but the rill erosion on reinforced soil surface does not even occur at 330mm rainfall (at the elapsed time of 3hrs in rainfall intensity of 110mm/hr). As a result of slope stability analysis, it was found that the construction method for reinforced soil surface would be more economical, easy and fast construction technology than conventional reinforcement method.

  • A slab-column connection is susceptible to brittle punching shear failure, which may result in the necessity of shear reinforcement. In the present study, to investigate the earthquake resistance of newly developed lattice shear reinforcement, experimental study was performed for interior slab-column connections subjected to cyclic loading. For comparison, specimens with existing shear reinforcement method such as stud rail, shear band and stirrup were also tested. The test result showed that the structural capacity of the lattice shear reinforcement was superior to those of the existing methods and was greater than the code-specified strength. On the other hand, the existing methods did not significantly improve the shear strength of the specimens. The shear strengths of the existing methods were much less than the code-specified shear strength.

  • In this study, seismic performance of existing RC frames reinforced with steel chevron bracing systems was experimentally evaluated. For this purpose, the unreinforced base specimen and seismically reinforced specimens with steel chevron bracing systems were fabricated and tested. Both strength and stiffness of the reinforced specimens were targeted about 2-3 times larger than the base specimen. Test results showed that the stiffness, strength, and ductility of the reinforced specimens considerably improved than those of unreinforced base specimen. Therefore, the results from this study could offer the basic information on the developing design guideline for the seismic reinforcement of RC frames.

  • This study investigated the scour characteristics of artificial reef according to unreinforced and reinforced artificial reefs through laboratory test and numerical analysis. In this study, geogrid was used as a reinforcement of seabed. Three different reinforced areas were selected; one time, three times and five times bottom area of artificial reef. Two-dimensional water channel test was carried out to investigate scour patten of sand and silt grounds. Numerical analysis was also performed to see the velocity vector and scouring patten around artificial reef which was same condition with experiment. The numerical results were in good agreements with the experimental test results. It was found that the geogrid-installed soft ground under artificial reef tends to reduce scour, compared to unreinforced soft ground.

  • Infiltration and the rising level of groundwater caused by rainfall are a major cause of the landslide and sliding. In order to secure the safety factor of slope, the slope stabilization and reinforcement works are used to enhance consistency. Nailing, Slope Drainage method and the surface vegetation measures can be simultaneously applied in the Mass Nail method, which is also environmental friendly reinforcement method. To demonstrate the reinforcement effect of a strengthened slope by Mass Nail, the changes in water contents by rainfall were considered while performing Scale Model Test. As a result, safety factor of reinforced slope was about 1.4~2.3 times increased on the unstrength slope. In the case of increasing water content 10% to 22%, The maximum stress was reduced to 12%~24% at the average rate of 18% on the unstrength slope and the reinforced slope by the Mass Nail Method was reduced to 4%~23% at the average rate of 14%.

  • This paper investigates the shear properties of bottom ash-crumb rubber mixture reinforced with waste fishing net. Mixtures used in this experiment were prepared at 2 different percentages of crumb rubber (2 mm~10 mm) content (i.e., 0%, 50% by weight of the dry bottom ash). In this study several series of triaxial tests were carried out on the six different specimens : unreinforced bottom ash, reinforced bottom ash with 1 or 2 layers, unreinforced mixture, reinforced mixture with 1 or 2 layers. The experimental results indicated that the shear properties of bottom ash-crumb rubber mixture were strongly influenced by reinforcing layer of waste fishing net and crumb rubber addition. It is shown that the internal friction angle of bottom ash-crumb rubber mixture decrease with addition of crumb rubber due to the compression properties of crumb rubber. However, the internal friction angle of the mixture increased with an increase in reinforcing layer due to interlocking effect and friction between mixture and waste fishing net.
