  • In this study, lignin was efficiently degraded via two-step catalytic cracking process and lignin-oil, char, and gas was produced as lignin degraded products. Three kinds of catalysts (MgO, CaO, and Pt/C) were used in first catalytic cracking step and the highest lignin-oil yield (76.2 wt%) was obtained in Pt/C catalyst with the smallest char formation (4.1 wt%). GC-MS/FID analysis revealed that 18 kinds of monomeric phenols existed in lignin-oil and sum of them was the highest in Pt/C condition (97.8 mg/g lignin). Meanwhile, relatively lower yield of monomeric phenols was produced in MgO and CaO condition because of their absorption on catalysts. Lignin-oil produced over Pt/C was introduced to second catalytic cracking process with porous Pd/activated carbon aerogel catalyst. From this process, four kinds of monomeric phenols such as 4-ethylguaiacol, 4-propylguaiacol, 4-ethylsyringol, 4-propylsyringol were selectively produced at 0.89 - 1.82 wt% level.

  • Eight hydrolyzable tannin compounds, such as gallic acid (1), methyl gallate (2), kurigalin (3), 1,2,3,6-tetra-O-galloyl-${\beta}$-D-(+)-glucose (4), 1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-${\beta}$-D-(+)-glucose (5), 6-m-digalloyl-1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-${\beta}$-D-(+)-glucose (6), isocorilagin (7), macabarterin (8), were isolated from the EtOAc and $H_2O$ soluble fractions of Katsura tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) leaves, wood and bark. Then antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activity were evaluated on the each isolated compound. The antioxidative test was DPPH radical scavenging activity and all of the isolated compounds indicated much higher antioxidative values compare to the controls, BHT and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol. In the anti-inflammatory test measuring nitric oxide (NO) inhibition activity, methyl gallate, 1,2,3,6-tetra-O-galloyl-${\beta}$-D-glucose and 1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-${\beta}$-D-glucose inhibited NO production, and especially, methyl gallate showed high inhibition activity. However, the anti-inflammatory activity of the hydrolyzable tannins did not show positive effect. Based on the above results, the hydrolyzable tannins of katsura tree may be used as one of the natural biomass sources that can substitute with the synthetic antioxidant.

  • This research was performed to evaluate adsorption behavior of woody charcoals obtained from wood powder, fiber and bark of spruce (Abies sibirica Ledeb). The wood materials were carbonized at various temperatures for 1 hour using experimental rotary kiln without any inert gas. The adsorption capacity of iodine and toluene, specific surface area and removal efficiency of acetic acid and ammonia gas of those charcoals were measured. The higher was the temperature for carbonization, the lower yields of charcoals were. Ash content of bark charcoal was higher than that of wood powder charcoal or fiber charcoal. Elemental analysis of woody charcoal revealed that the content of carbon was gradually lincreased as carbonization temperature was higher. When carbonization temperature was higher, adsorption capacity of woody charcoals for iodine was much improved. Wood powder charcoal and fiber charcoal were more effective for iodine adsorption rather than bark charcoal. Capacity of toluene adsorption was the highest in the charcoal of $600^{\circ}C$. Charcoals produced at high temperature efficiently removed acetic acid gas, while charcoals carbonized at low temperature such as $400^{\circ}C$ were proper to remove ammonia gas. This difference may be explained that the acidity of charcoals depends on the carbonization temperature: charcoals of low temperature indicate acidic property, while those of high temperature turned to alkaline.

  • Medicine herb residues boards were manufactured by using medicine herb residues, and emission properties of volatile compounds from boards were examined under various temperature conditions. The volatile compounds were identified with analysis of TD GC/MS by absorbing their flavor components in Tenax tubes. Total 88 volatile compounds were identified from the board. The number of identified compounds at temperature conditions of $25^{\circ}C$, $35^{\circ}C$, and $45^{\circ}C$ were 44, 55, and 65 kinds, respectively. The number of volatile compounds and the total peak area tended to increase with an increase in the temperature. The number of the flavor components detected in all temperature conditions were 34 kinds. Hydrocarbon compounds showed 93% of the detected flavor compounds at $25^{\circ}C$, 92% at $35^{\circ}C$, and 90% at $45^{\circ}C$. Ether compounds accounted for 4% and ketone, aldehyde, and acid-type compounds were detected in a small quantity. The hydrocarbons were composed of 17 kinds of monoterpenes and 39 kinds of sesquiterpenes, which accounted for 11% and 80%, respectively. The most detected compound of monoterpene was limonene, and the major flavor components of sesquiterpenes were ${\alpha}-curcumene$, zingiberene, ${\beta}-elemene$, ${\beta}-selinene$, ${\alpha}-amorphene$, and ${\alpha}-copaene$. Anethole (3.26%) known for ether compounds was detected considerably in all temperature conditions. The results suggest that the manufactured medicine herb residues board include various types of flavor compounds and the flavor compounds might be useful for the manufacture of various products.

  • To investigate the effects of ionic liquid pretreatment on biomass, giant miscanthus was treated with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim][OAc]) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Bmim][OAc]) at three temperature conditions ($90^{\circ}C$, $110^{\circ}C$, and $130^{\circ}C$). As temperature condition increased, yield of the cellulose-rich product (CP) was reduced from 87.2% to 67.6%, while yield of the ionic liquid lignin (ILL) increased from 2.2% to 9.9%. Compared to the ILL, CP had lower carbon contents and higher oxygen contents. Enzymatic hydrolysis of CPs showed that conversion ratio of CP treated with [Emim][OAc] at $110^{\circ}C$ was 56.7%, the highest digestibility. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the maximum degradation rate decreased as temperature condition increased. In addition, maximum degradation temperature of ILL treated with [Emim][OAc] ranged from 274 to $279^{\circ}C$ which was lower than that of ILL treated with [Bmim][OAc]. Analytical date for ${\beta}$-O-4 linkage frequency in the ILL revealed that ${\beta}$-O-4 linkage frequency in the ILL decreased as the temperature rose. Furthermore, the highest S/G ratio of the ILL was determined to ca. 1.2 obtained from [Bmim][OAc] treatment at $110^{\circ}C$.

  • This study investigated the effect of nanocellulose, such as microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) and cellulose nanocrystal (CNC), and aminated starch on tensile property and thermal stability of plasticized starch film. Glycerol (23 wt%) was used as a plasticizer and nanocelluloses of 1-30 parts per hundred parts of resin (phr) in the basis of plasticized starch were added. Tensile strength and elastic modulus increased with increasing nanocellulose addition amount, whereas elongation at break decreased. Tensile properties of MFC-reinforced starch film were higher than those of CNC-reinforced film. Optimum addition amount of aminated starch, which is commonly used for paper sizing, to improve tensile property of film, was found to be 5%. And 1% addition of aminated starch showed the best effect in the improvement of tensile property of the film. Thermal stability was improved with the addition of MFC to plasticized starch film with and without aminated starch.

  • Since 1990's, a plywood for flooring base has gotten customers' demand. Costs of raw material and production increased because of changed environment of industry. Tropical timber such as Red Meranti (Shorea acuminate) used for raw material of the floor has been depleting beside countries in South Eastern Asia changed species of afforestation. As a result, it gets hard to secure good quality of raw material for plywood. Moreover plywood price is increased suddenly after earthquake in Japan. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) in china has been using for raw material as a countermeasure of changed environment of industry. In this study, possibility of using flooring consisted of Eucalyptus veneer as crossband layers was checked by deflection experiments. Flooring consisted of Red Meranti was used for comparison. Two factors which impact on deflection are a type of density gradient and density difference between Long-grain veneer and Short-grain veneer. Red Meranti samples are M type of density gradient on the other hand Eucalyptus samples are W type of density gradient. The more samples have high density difference, the more deformation was checked. A sample which has big density difference between core and cross bands layer warp more also deform. Flooring was deformed smaller than plywood and samples which have big density difference was deformed more.

  • The fancy veneer flooring board is high value-added wooden material. The classification of the flooring boards by the observation with the naked eye causes color difference among fancy veneers. It turned out that this inaccuracy of color difference among fancy veneers increased in case of the identification by metamerism or the flooring construction. Therefore, this study was performed to classify fancy veneers produced from 3 species such as Tilia sp., Betula sp., and Acer sp. which were identified with the naked eye by Light and Dark grade, by using CIELAB. In addition, each specie's threshold on CIERGB was investigated and a range of hue, saturation and intensity by an application of HSI color model were studied. Intensity of the HIS color model could be the best value to be used when color, saturation and intensity of the HSI color model were used for the classification of the flooring board's color. In addition, it seemed that color range of all three criteria lied between $45^{\circ}$ and $55^{\circ}$. In the case of identification by threshold of RGB element, considering only specific color element value is unlikely to lead to accurate classification of fancy veneers of flooring board.

  • A kraft black liquor obtained from pulping of pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb et Zucc) was used for producing three kinds of adhesive such as black liquor-phenol formaldehyde resin, methyloeated kraft lignin-phenol formaldehyde resin, and lignin cake-phenol resin. In case of producing black liquor-phenol formaldehyde resin, about 60 percent of the phenolic resin could be replaced by black liquor. Also the optimal press condition appeared to be $160^{\circ}C$ for 7 min. (l5.77Kg/$cm^2$ in dry test, 8.54Kg/$cm^2$ in 4 hr. boil test). Phenol could be substituted up to 80-90 percent by methylolated kraft lignin. The suitable conditions of factors affecting bond quality were pH to 2.6, methanol as solvent and 0.2ml formaldehyde per 1g of the adhesives, respectively. The optimal press condition was $150^{\circ}C$ for 4 min. (188.54Kg/$cm^2$ in dry test, 10.08Kg/$cm^2$ in 4 hr. boil test). In preparing lignin cake-phenol resin, a suitable mixing ratio of phenol to powered kraft lignin was one to one by weight. The optimal press condition was $150^{\circ}C$ for 4 min.(18.46Kg/$cm^2$ in dry test, 12.31Kg/$cm^2$ in 4 hr. hoil test).

  • The current enforce decree of "The Act on the Promotion of Construction Waste Recycling" divides seventeen kinds of construction wastes by property and configuration. Mixed construction waste, one of them classified by the enforce decree, is composed two more than justified construction wastes except refuse soil and rock. In construction wastes justified by enforce decree of this law, most refuse concrete and asphalt concrete of construction wastes are recycled. As well as refuse metal is separated, sorted from bulk them, and merchandised for value. Finally this is used the secondary manufactured products. Even though combustible construction wastes like refuse wood, plastics, fiber can be recycled RDF(Refuse derived fuel) or RPF(Refuse plastic fuel) because of high caloric value and low heavy metal but most of them are discharged as mixed construction waste and then treated by treated by incineration and landfill. Therefore, to control construction waste flow efficiently, construction wastes are classifies first combustible, incombustible, mixed combustible, incombustible and etc. in this study. The combustible waste is consisted refuse wood, plastics, fiber and etc. and incombustible waste contains refuse concrete, asphalt, and etc. Mixed construction is construction waste that can not separate from mixed waste bulk with different kinds.
