This study was conducted to suggest the effective management and recycling processes of coffee waste, which can be easily obtained from coffee shops and coffee-related products industries. Prior to the fabrication of pellets, the potential of coffee waste as a raw material of pellet was investigated through the examination of its chemical compositions and fuel characteristics. Major gradient included in coffee waste was holocellulose, followed by fat/oil and protein. Coffee waste contained a small quantity of ash (0.7%), such as calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium. Interestingly, coffee waste was easily dried probably due to its porous structure. Pellets fabricated with coffee waste and larch sawdust showed good fuel characteristics, such as moisture content, ash content, density and durability. The pellets exceed greatly the minimum requirements of $1^{st}$-grade wood pellet standard designated by National Institute of Forest Science (NIFOS). Particularly, the high calorific value of coffee waste showed the potential as a raw material of pellet. However, owing to high nitrogen and sulfur contents, coffee waste is like to be used as a raw material of wood pellet for combined heat and power plants equipped with a reduction system of $NO_x$ and $SO_x$ gases. On the other hand, 91 wt% larch sawdust and 9 wt% coffee waste are required to fabricate the $1^{st}$-grade wood pellets designated by NIFOS. Pellets fabricated with the conditions are estimated to have nitrogen content of 0.298% and sulfur content of 0.03%. Lastly, if amounts of coffee waste and sawdust in the production of wood pellets are adequately adjusted according to its purchasing price, the manufacturing cost of pellet can effectively be reduced. In addition, it is expected tp prepare the effective recycling process of waste and to relieve the environmental burden with the reduction of waste from the commercialization of coffee waste/larch pellets.

This study examined the optimal manufacturing conditions of RDF using heat-dried sludge from sewage treatment plant in Cheonan with the oil-drying method. The amounts of oil evaporation and oil drying of the heat-dried sludge were measured at different temperatures to evaluate the value of the product. The performance of the product was then measured using a calorimeter and TGA. In addition, the concentration of odor, NH3, H2S, and TVOC during drying was determined using a portable odor-meter. Ingredient analysis was performed by EDS. Considering mass-production, the oil to heat-dried sludge weight ratio was fixed to 4:1. At $130^{\circ}C$, only physical mixing occurred after the instantaneous drying of internal water. Considering the eco-friendly aspects, there was no significant difference in the drying efficiency between $160^{\circ}C$ and $190^{\circ}C$. Therefore, the optimal conditions were a drying temperature of $160^{\circ}C$ within 5 minutes. Finally, the RDF manufactured in this study and fuel used in the thermal power plants were compared. The calorific value was 4,449kcal/kg, the water content was 2% and the ash content was 34%, which is higher than the fuel of thermal power plants. Therefore, it is believed that coal energy as well as wood pellets can be replaced.
Ligneous biomass such as wood pellet is characterized as carbon neutral which has no carbon dioxide emission ; additionally, it can be used as an alternative fuel by co-firing without additional plant reformation as well as for maintaining stability of fuel supply. We can develop CDM project while co-firing by using biomass into conventional coal fired thermal power plant with AM0085 CDM methodology, and it's possible to prove additionality as fuel cost per kWh is higher than bituminous. The study shows that the electricity by biomass can reduce green house emission by $0.6737tCO_2$ per MWh.
Biomass can be considered as chemical energy obtained from nature, and includes all living organisms such as plants, animals, and microorganisms. Biomass is eco-friendly, is easily obtainable from the environment, and can be recycled without special treatment processes. Biomass can also be converted into bioenergy fuel through pyrolysis and fermentation. Therefore, it has been considered as a renewable energy source, which prevents the depletion of natural resources such as fossil fuels. In this study, torrefaction to increase the carbon content in various types of biomass sources (sawdust, rice straw, rice bristles, coffee ground, and waste wood) was conducted under an inert atmosphere and at a temperature of 523~573K. The possibility of using torrefied biomass as an alternative to solid fuel for industrial purposes was analyzed by examining the carbon concentration and combustion behaviors.

For the conversion of domestic waste-wood into energy, a fixed bed gasifier ($0.9 m{\times}2.4 m$) having the capacity of 2 ton/day was designed and constructed. The dual knife valve was used to feed waste-wood of which size was 3~5 cm and a rotary stoker system was installed in the bottom of gasifier. The pilot gasification system consisted of feeding system, fixed bed gasifier, gravity fine particle collector, heat exchanger for syngas cooling, ID fan, and cooling tower. The operation temperatures of gasifier were $700{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ and the concentrations of syngas were CO: 25~40 vol%, $H_2$: 7~12 vol%, $CH_4$: 2~4 vol%, $CO_2$: 12~24 vol%. The calorific value of syngas was $1100{\sim}1500kcal/Nm^3$ and was enough to be applied in the industrial combustor. Also the gas engine was operated by using syngas from biomass gasifier and produced 1~4 kW of power.

Biochar is a carbon rich solid produced by the pyrolysis of biomass such as energy crops, forestry residues, and wood wastes. Biochar returned to soil is to mitigate climate change and the feedstock of wood wastes reduces fossil fuel consumption as well as disposal costs. This study was practiced to evaluate a biochar system by gasification in terms of global warming regarding the soil application of the produced biochar. Life cycle assessment methodology was used to analyze the environmental impacts of the system, and the functional unit was 1 tonne of wood wastes. The result shows that the biochar system by using wood wastes as feedstock produces 4.048E-01 $kgCO_2-eq$ from the pre-treatment process as chipping and drying, 4.579E-01 $kgCO_2-eq$ from the pyrolysis process, and 9.070E-02 $kgCO_2-eq$ from the spreading to agricultural land, therefore total 9.534E-01 $kgCO_2-eq$ are generated. About 252 kg of $CO_2$ is still stored in the produced biochar in soil after carbon offsetting of the system. Therefore, the net carbon of the system is -251 kg of $CO_2-eq$.
This study was conducted to investigate the physical properties of wood chip for fuel processing with woody biomass. Seven species are selected and processed for testing physical properties by 3-type wood chippers which are commonly used in Korea. Wood chips produced by self-propelled drum chipper and fixed type wood chipper equipped with separator were uniform in size and shape. It was shown that the bulk density of produced wood chips was decreased with increasing the wood chip layer thickness, and oak chips prepared by self-propelled drum chipper and fixed type wood chipper showed the highest bulk density.
Different biosolid fuel (wood pellet) properties between trunk and root of pine (Pinus densiflora) biomass were investigated. Trunk has more organic solvent extracts and Klason lignin content which has higher heating values than root biomass component. In root biomass, polysaccharides content was higher than trunk biomass. Based on Higher Heating Value (HHD) analysis and ash content, trunk biomass showed better solid fuel characteristics than root biomass. But pine root biomass had lower HHD than trunk biomass, its HHD values were higher than other hardwood or annual plant lignocellulosic biomass.
This study analyzed the effect of Greenhouse of wood pellet fuel conversing from Diesel. We studied to find the optimal manufacturing conditions of coffee grounds sludge RDF with oil drying method. We expanded the lab scale to pilot scale to compare the efficiency of the oil-drying equipment and The selection of the ratio of coffee grounds and oil, the setting temperature, and the temperature change and water content with time were measured. In order to analyze the characteristics of the research results, characteristics of solid fuels produced(Coffee grounds of oil-dried) by calorimeter, TGA, combustion equipment, and combustion gas measuring instrument were analyzed. As a result, the ratio of oil to coffee grounds was 4: 1, and when the setting temperature was set to $300^{\circ}C$, the water content reached 10wt.% or less within 20 minutes. ln addition, it showed high calorific value of 6,273kcal/kg. However, coffee grounds had a similar composition to wood and showed high luminance and produced a lot of CO in combustion gas. As a result, it is considered to be unsuitable for thermoelectric power plant and camping fuel, but the initial ignition speed is high and the heat generation is high, so it is considered that it can replace the fuels for current use.
