3D Face Recognition in the Multiple-Contour Line Area Using Fuzzy Integral (얼굴의 등고선 영역을 이용한 퍼지적분 기반의 3차원 얼굴 인식)

  • The surface curvatures extracted from the face contain the most important personal facial information. In particular, the face shape using the depth information represents personal features in detail. In this paper, we develop a method for recognizing the range face images by combining the multiple face regions using fuzzy integral. For the proposed approach, the first step tries to find the nose tip that has a protrusion shape on the face from the extracted face area and has to take into consideration of the orientated frontal posture to normalize. Multiple areas are extracted by the depth threshold values from reference point, nose tip. And then, we calculate the curvature features: principal curvature, gaussian curvature, and mean curvature for each region. The second step of approach concerns the application of eigenface and Linear Discriminant Analysis(LDA) method to reduce the dimension and classify. In the last step, the aggregation of the individual classifiers using the fuzzy integral is explained for each region. In the experimental results, using the depth threshold value 40 (DT40) show the highest recognition rate among the regions, and the maximum curvature achieves 98% recognition rate, incase of fuzzy integral.

Edge-based spatial descriptor for content-based Image retrieval (내용 기반 영상 검색을 위한 에지 기반의 공간 기술자)

  • Content-based image retrieval systems are being actively investigated owing to their ability to retrieve images based on the actual visual content rather than by manually associated textual descriptions. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for image retrieval based on edge structural features using edge correlogram and color coherence vector. After color vector angle is applied in the pre-processing stage, an image is divided into two image parts (high frequency image and low frequency image). In low frequency image, the global color distribution of smooth pixels is extracted by color coherence vector, thereby incorporating spatial information into the proposed color descriptor. Meanwhile, in high frequency image, the distribution of the gray pairs at an edge is extracted by edge correlogram. Since the proposed algorithm includes the spatial and edge information between colors, it can robustly reduce the effect of the significant change in appearance and shape in image analysis. The proposed method provides a simple and flexible description for the image with complex scene in terms of structural features of the image contents. Experimental evidence suggests that our algorithm outperforms the recently histogram refinement methods for image indexing and retrieval. To index the multidimensional feature vectors, we use R*-tree structure.

  • The new MPEG-4 video coding standard enables content-based functionalities. Image segmentation is an indispensable process for it. This paper addresses an effective segmentation of non-rigid objects. Non-rigid objects are deformable objects with fuzzy, blurred and indefinite boundaries. So it is difficult to segment deformable objects precisely. In order to solve this problem, we propose an effective segmentation of non-rigid objects using watershed algorithms in still pictures. And we propose an automatic segmentation through intra-frame and inter-frame segmentation process in video sequences. Automatic segmentation preforms boundary-based and region-based segmentation to extract precise object boundaries.

  • In order to increase extraction efficiency of AlGaInP-based vertical RED LEDs, chemical wet etching technique was produced by using a roughened surface with triangle-like morphology. A commonly used $H_3PO_4$-based solution was applied for chemical wet etching. The light extraction of AlGaInP LED was related to the n-side roughed surface morphology. The morphology of roughed surface is analyzed by the atomic force microscope (AFM). As a result, the roughed surface AlGaInP LED has a root-mean-square (RMS) roughness of 44 nm. The brightness shows 41% increase after roughening n-side surface, as compared to the ordinary flat surface LED.

  • In this paper, we present a method to extract the text lines in poorly structured documents. The text lines may have different orientations, considerably curved shapes, and there are possibly a few wide inter-word gaps in a text line. Those text lines can be found in posters, blocks of addresses, artistic documents. Our method based on the traditional perceptual grouping but we develop novel solutions to overcome the problems of insufficient seed points and vaned orientations un a single line. In this paper, we assume that text lines contained tone connected components, in which each connected components is a set of black pixels within a letter, or some touched letters. In our scheme, the connected components closer than an iteratively incremented threshold will make together a chain. Elongate chains are identified as the seed chains of lines. Then the seed chains are extended to the left and the right regarding the local orientations. The local orientations will be reevaluated at each side of the chains when it is extended. By this process, all text lines are finally constructed. The proposed method is good for extraction of the considerably curved text lines from logos and slogans in our experiment; 98% and 94% for the straight-line extraction and the curved-line extraction, respectively.

Real-time Hand Region Detection and Tracking using Depth Information (깊이정보를 이용한 실시간 손 영역 검출 및 추적)

  • In this paper, we propose a real-time approach for detecting and tracking a hand region by analyzing depth images. We build a hand model in advance. The model has the shape information of a hand. The detecting process extracts out moving areas in an image, which are possibly caused by moving a hand in front of a camera. The moving areas can be identified by analyzing accumulated difference images and applying the region growing technique. The extracted moving areas are compared against a hand model to get justified as a hand region. The tracking process keeps the track of center points of hand regions of successive frames. For this purpose, it involves three steps. The first step is to determine a seed point that is the closest point to the center point of a previous frame. The second step is to perform region growing to form a candidate region of a hand. The third step is to determine the center point of a hand to be tracked. This point is searched by the mean-shift algorithm within a confined area whose size varies adaptively according to the depth information. To verify the effectiveness of our approach, we have evaluated the performance of our approach while changing the shape and position of a hand as well as the velocity of hand movement.

An Object-based Database Mapping Technology for 3D Graphic Data (3차원 그래픽 데이터를 위한 객체단위 데이터베이스 매핑 기법)

  • Recently, there have been increased many 3 dimensional graphic applications in Internet. Thus, a growing number of methods have been proposed for retrieving 3-D graphic data using their 3D features such as color, texture, shape, and spacial relations. However, few researches focus on 3D graphic modeling and database storage techniques. In this paper, we introduce a system that can store 3D graphics data modeled by XML-based 3D graphics markup language, 3DGML, and support content-based retrievals on 3D data by using SQL. We also present a mapping technique of 3DGML to relational database. The mapping process includes the extraction of semantic information from 3DGML and translate it into relational format. Finally, we show examples of SQL queries which use the 3D information contained in a 3D scene such as objects, 3D features, descriptions and scene-object component hierarchy.

Sign Language Spotting Based on Semi-Markov Conditional Random Field (세미-마르코프 조건 랜덤 필드 기반의 수화 적출)

  • Sign language spotting is the task of detecting the start and end points of signs from continuous data and recognizing the detected signs in the predefined vocabulary. The difficulty with sign language spotting is that instances of signs vary in both motion and shape. Moreover, signs have variable motion in terms of both trajectory and length. Especially, variable sign lengths result in problems with spotting signs in a video sequence, because short signs involve less information and fewer changes than long signs. In this paper, we propose a method for spotting variable lengths signs based on semi-CRF (semi-Markov Conditional Random Field). We performed experiments with ASL (American Sign Language) and KSL (Korean Sign Language) dataset of continuous sign sentences to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms both HMM and CRF.

  • This paper proposes a method of content-based image retrieval using region feature vector in order to overcome disadvantages of existing color histogram methods. The color histogram methods have a weak point that reduces accuracy because of quantization error, and more. In order to solve this, we convert color information to HSV space and quantize hue factor being purecolor information and calculate histogram and then use thus for retrieval feature that is robust in brightness, movement, and rotation. Also we solve an insufficient part that is the most serious problem in color histogram methods by dividing an image into sixteen regions and then comparing each region. We improve accuracy by edge and DC of DCT transformation. As a result of experimenting with 1,000 color images, the proposed method has showed better precision than the existing methods.

Pothole Detection Algorithm Based on Saliency Map for Improving Detection Performance (포트홀 탐지 정확도 향상을 위한 Saliency Map 기반 포트홀 탐지 알고리즘)

  • Potholes have caused diverse problems such as wheel damage and car accident. A pothole detection technology is the most important to provide efficient pothole maintenance. The previous pothole detections have been performed by manual reporting methods. Thus, the problems caused by potholes have not been solved previously. Recently, many pothole detection systems based on video cameras have been studied, which can be implemented at low costs. In this paper, we propose a new pothole detection algorithm based on saliency map information in order to improve our previously developed algorithm. Our previous algorithm shows wrong detection with complicated situations such as the potholes overlapping with shades and similar surface textures with normal road surfaces. To address the problems, the proposed algorithm extracts more accurate pothole regions using the saliency map information, which consists of candidate extraction and decision. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm shows better performance than our previous algorithm.
