Running Large-scale Mobile Software using PDA Cluster Computing (PDA 클러스터 컴퓨팅을 활용한 대용량 모바일 소프트웨어 실행)

  • As wireless internet markets become larger than before, many mobile applications are also being developed actively. In this circumstances mobile devices such as cell phones, PDAs are playing an important role to satisfy the user's need of ubiquitous computing. Due to the hardware limitations, however, the mobile devices like PDA can not run large-scale softwares by itself. The main goal of this paper is to make large-scale applications runnable on PDA. To accomplish this, we used the PDA-JPVM cluster computing engine which has been already developed by us. We found out by running the applications and the performance evaluation that large-scale Java softwares can easily run on the hardware-limited PDA. And the performance evaluation results are also presented.

Construction of Mobile Collaboration Environment for Ubiquitous Computing and its Application (유비쿼터스 컴퓨팅을 위한 모바일 협업 환경 구축 및 응용)

  • In this paper, we describes a Compact Distributed Object Group Framework(CDOGF) for mobile collaboration service in ubiquitous computing. CDOGF support network connections of sensors and devices, management of mobile computing devices, and grouping of objects for mobile collaboration service according to the logical area. For this, we defined methods for detail functions and interface. And, we classified into four interactions of that sensors and a application, the CDOGF and a application, between the components of the CDOGF, the CDOGF on a mobile device and the DOGF on a server. We also defined mobile collaboration environment by analyzing existing technologies. In this environment we used the TMO scheme for interaction and the TMOSM for distributed middleware. Finally, we implemented u-hospital application that applied this environment. This application collects environment and health information by PDAs in wards. Also, It provides the information service for patient management task.

  • As a way of augmenting constrained resources of mobile devices such as CPU and memory, many works on mobile cloud computing (MCC), where mobile devices utilize remote resources of cloud services or PCs, /have been proposed. A typical approach to resolving resource problems of mobile nodes in MCC is to offload functional components to other resource-rich nodes. However, most of the current woks do not consider a characteristic of dynamically changed MCC environment and propose offloading mechanisms in a conceptual level. In this paper, in order to ensure performance of highly complex mobile applications, we propose four different types of offloading mechanisms which can be applied to diverse situations of MCC. And, the proposed offloading mechanisms are practically designed so that they can be implemented with current technologies. Moreover, we define cost models to derive the most sutilable situation of applying each offloading mechanism and prove the performance enhancement through offloadings in a quantitative manner.

  • As a way of augmenting constrained resources of mobile devices such as CPU and memory, many works on mobile cloud computing (MCC), where mobile devices utilize remote resources of cloud services or PCs, have been proposed. Typically, in MCC, many nodes with different operating systems and platform and diverse mobile applications or services are located, and a central manager autonomously performs several management tasks to maintain a consistent level of MCC overall quality. However, as there are a larger number of nodes, mobile applications, and services subscribed by the mobile applications and their interactions are extremely increased, a traditional management method of MCC reveals a fundamental problem of degrading its overall performance due to overloaded management tasks to the central manager, i.e. a bottle neck phenomenon. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a clustering-based optimization method to solve performance-related problems on large-scaled MCC and to stabilize its overall quality. With our proposed method, we can ensure to minimize the management overloads and stabilize the quality of MCC in an active and autonomous way.

  • Mobile Edge Computing(MEC) is a emerging technology to cope with mobile traffic explosion and to provide a variety of services having specific requirements by means of running some functions at mobile edge nodes directly. For instance, caching function can be executed in order to offload mobile traffics, and safety services using real time video analytics can be delivered to users. So far, a myriad of methods and architectures for personalized service recommendation have been proposed, but there is no study on the subject which takes unique characteristics of mobile edge computing into account. To provide personalized services, acquiring users' context is of great significance. If the conventional personalized service model, which is server-side oriented, is applied to the mobile edge computing scheme, it may cause context isolation and privacy issues more severely. There are some advantages at mobile edge node with respect to context acquisition. Another notable characteristic at MEC scheme is that interaction between users and applications is very dynamic due to temporal relation. This paper proposes the local service recommendation platform architecture which encompasses these characteristics, and also discusses the personalized service recommendation mechanism to be able to mitigate context isolation problem and privacy issues.

  • With the rapid growth of recent wireless mobile computing application technology and handheld mobile terminal device development technology, one of the big issue in these fields is to design online games in wireless mobile ad hoc network environment. Online games in mobile computing environment have lots of constraints for developing online games because mobile terminals have many limitations such as low performance of processor, limited memory space, small bandwidth of wireless communication, and confined life of battery power. Therefore, most of mobile games are restrictive in the function of online and multi-play up to date. In this paper, the online MMORPG game, capable of multi-play with many other mobile users using mobile terminals in wireless mobile computing environment, is designed and implemented. Proposed mobile online game uses bluetooth to construct temporary wireless mobile ad hoc network with other mobile clients, and designed to carry out online MMORPG game with these clients. It also supports multi-play among them.

  • 모바일 엣지 컴퓨팅(Mobile Edge Computing, MEC)은 높은 컴퓨팅 성능을 요구하는 작업을 모바일 장치에서 가까운 MEC 서버로 오프로딩함으로써 모바일 서비스에 높은 계산 요구량을 효율적으로 제공할 수 있는 기술로 부상하였다. 본 논문에서는 실행 대기 시간과 장치 에너지 소비를 줄이기 위해 여러 가지의 독립적 작업을 통해 MEC 시스템에 대한 작업 오프로드 일정 및 전송 에너지 할당을 최적화하는 기법을 제안한다. 시뮬레이션 결과로 MEC 시스템에서 사용 가능한 무선 및 계산 리소스가 상대적으로 균형 잡혀있는 경우 작업 오프로딩 일정이 더 중요하다는 것을 확인했다.

Cache Replacement and Coherence Policies Depending on Data Significance in Mobile Computing Environments (모바일 컴퓨팅 환경에서 데이터의 중요도에 기반한 캐시 교체와 일관성 유지)

  • Recently, mobile computing environments are becoming rapidly common. This trend emphasizes the necessity of accessing database systems on fixed networks from mobile platforms via wireless networks. However, it is not an appropriate way that applies the database access methods for traditional computing environments to mobile computing environments because of their essential restrictions. This paper suggests a new agent-based mobile database access model and also two functions calculating data significance scores to choose suitable data items for cache replacement and coherence policies. These functions synthetically reflect access term, access frequency and tendency, update frequency and tendency, and data item size distribution. As the result of simulation experiment, our policies outperform LRU, LIX, and SAIU policies in aspects of decrement of access latency, improvement of cache byte hit ratio, and decrease of cache byte pollution ratio.

  • Innovations from current researches on cloud computing such as applying bio-inspired computing techniques have brought new level solutions in offloading mechanisms. With the growing trend of mobile devices, mobile cloud computing can also benefit from applying bio-inspired techniques. Energy-efficient offloading mechanisms on mobile cloud systems are needed to reduce the total energy consumption but previous works did not consider energy consumption in the decision-making of task distribution. This paper proposes the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) as an offloading strategy of cloudlet to data centers where each task is represented as a particle during the process. The collected tasks are classified using K-means clustering on the cloudlet before applying PSO in order to minimize the number of particles and to locate the best data center for a specific task, instead of considering all tasks during the PSO process. Simulation results show that the proposed PSO excels in choosing data centers with respect to energy consumption, while it has accumulated a little more processing time compared to the other approaches.
