  • Stepped I-beams having increased moment of inertia at one end (singly stepped beam) or both ends (doubly stepped beams) can often be seen in construction of bridges due to material economy and easy fabrication of the section. This paper presents the results of the parametric study of lateral torsional buckling of monosymmetric stepped I-beams with constant depth subjected to uniform moment. Design recommendations were made based on the finite element results of the models having different combinations of monosymmetric ratio, stepped length ratio, flange thickness ratio and flange width ratio. The proposed approximation is acceptable based on the parameters given having mostly conservative results. The proposed equation can be further used to extend the study to different loading conditions.

  • In simply supported concrete beams with concentrated load, there is arch action that the internal lever arm length varies through shear span. Recently shear analysis model considering this effect has been developed, but the analysis algorithm is so complicated. Moreover, the variation of internal lever arm length is not considered on the shear compatibility condition. In this study, the shear analysis model is developed more simply and the variation of internal lever arm length is considered on the shear compatibility condition. From these modifications, an actual shear behavior of RC beams subjected to concentrated load could be expected from the results of the proposed analysis model.

  • Double split tee connection is a full strength-partial restrained connection that suitable for ordinary moment frame and special moment frame which demonstrates behavior characteristics depending on the stiffness ratio of columns and beams, changes in the geometric shape of the T-stub, number of fasteners and effect of panel zone. For the double split tee connection to ensure structurally safe behavior, it needs to exhibit sufficient strength, stiffness and ductile capacity. This study sought to investigate the effects of the moment-rotation angle relationship of the double split tee connection and to evaluate the initial rotational stiffness of the double split tee connection depending on changes in the geometric shape of the T-stub. To this end, two different double split tee connection specimens are experimented which designed to change geometric parameter values (${\alpha}^{\prime}$) of the T-stub, and a three-dimensional finite element analysis was performed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate kinetic variables of the lower extremity during walking on three different stair widths in healthy adults. Ten healthy college-aged adults($23.5{\pm}3.5$) recruited for this study. Each stairs with the same height and length(l8cm and 90cm) under the Korean Constructional Law but three different widths(26cm, 31cm and 36cm) were conducted for this study. One force plate(9286AA, Kistler Co.) was put on third stairs. One-way ANOVA was performed to find the stair width effects during stair walking and the following findings ware obtained. There was significantly decreased in ankle resultant joint moment at Pull-Up phase(p<.05) and, significantly increased in knee extension moment during mid-stance phase as stair width increase(p<.05), but there was no significance in ankle resultant joint moment was found at Forward Continuance Phase in Ascending Stair Walking and There was significantly increased in ankle resultant joint moment as stair width increase during mid-stance phase(p<.05) and no significance in knee and hip resultant moments among the stair width in descending stair walking.

  • A model for the effective moment of inertia $I_{\epsilon}$ as expressed in Branson's equation, in which reduction of the flexural rigidity of RC beams due to cracking are aptly taken into accoun,t is presented. However, KCI Code isn`t considered tension stiffening as it is in debonding of reinforcing bar. Therefore, this equation need to set up suitable to our design Code. The experimental work consisted of casting and testing a total of 6 simply supported reinforced concrete beams and a total of 4 continuos reinforced concrete beams under two point concentrated loads. Main parameters are concrete strength, coverage, bond between concrete and reinforcing bars, are known as have an effect on deflection and tension stiffening. Every test beams had the same $250{\times}350$mm rectangular section, with a simply supported clear span of 4,400 mm and a continuos clear span of 6,500 mm. Comparison of the test results with values obtained using the KCI Code equation of the effective moment of inertia showed a noticeable difference.

  • Flat plate structures under lateral load are susceptible to punching shear failure of the slab-column connection. To prevent such brittle failure, strength and ductility of the connection should be ensured. However, due to complexity in the behavior and difficulty in simulating the actual load and boundary conditions of the flat plate system, it is not easy to obtain reliable data regarding to the strength and ductility from the previous experimental studies. In the present study, a numerical study was performed for interior connections of continuous flat plate. For the purpose, a computer program for nonlinear FE analyses was developed, and the validity was verified by comparisons with the existing experimental results. Through the parametric studies, the variations of bending moment, shear, and torsional moment around the connection were investigated. Based on the findings of the numerical studies, the aspects which need to be improved in current design methods were discussed. The results of the present study will be used for developing a design method for the flat plate-column connection in the companion paper.

  • Rocking behavior of shallow foundation reduces the superstructure load during earthquake. However, because of deficiency of understanding of rocking mechanism and soil permanent deformation, it has not been applied to real construction. In this study, slow cyclic tests were conducted for embedded shallow foundations with various slenderness ratio via centrifuge tests. From the variation of earth pressure 'soil rounding surface' phenomenon which makes maximum overturning moment equal to ultimate moment capacity was observed. Rocking and sliding behavior mechanism was evaluated. Also, nonlinear behavior and energy dissipation increase as rotation angle increases. And ultimate moment capacity of embedded foundation is larger than that of surface foundation. Finally, adequate ultimate moment capacity can be suggested for seismic design through this study.

  • The nonlinear hydrodynamic pressure force and moment on hinged wavemakers of variable-draft are presented. A closed-form solution (correct to second-order) for the nonlinear wavemaker boundary value problem has been obtained by employing the Stokes perturbation expansion scheme. The physical significance of the second-order contributions to the hydrodynamic pressure moment are examined in detail. Design curves are presented which demonstrate both the magnitude of the second-order nonlinearities and the effects of the variable-draft hinge height. The second-order contributions to the total hydrodynamic force and moment consist of a time-dependent and a steady part. The sum of the first and second-order pressure force and moment show a significant increase over those predicted by linear wavemaker theory. The second-order effects are shown to vary with both relative water depth and wave amplitude. The second-order dynamic effects are relatively more important for hinged wavemakers with shallower drafts.

  • Feature point matching, which is finding the corresponding points from two images with different viewpoint, has been used in various vision-based applications and the demand for the real-time operation of the matching is increasing these days. This paper presents a real-time feature point matching method by using a local descriptor derived by Zernike moments. From an input image, we find a set of feature points by using an existing fast corner detection algorithm and compute a local descriptor derived by Zernike moments at each feature point. The local descriptor based on Zernike moments represents the properties of the image patch around the feature points efficiently and is robust to rotation and illumination changes. In order to speed up the computation of Zernike moments, we compute the Zernike basis functions with fixed size in advance and store them in lookup tables. The initial matching results are acquired by an Approximate Nearest Neighbor (ANN) method and false matchings are eliminated by a RANSAC algorithm. In the experiments we confirmed that the proposed method matches the feature points in images with various transformations in real-time and outperforms existing methods.
