  • The Perfectly Matched Layer(PML) provide good performance in absorption over a wide frequency range and is an appropriate ABC for waveguides with high dispersion. In this paper, a novel algorithm is proposed to improve the computational efficiency of the PML. In the input and output ports, the fields are decomposed into a series of modes, and then an appropriate ABC is applied to each mode. CPU time and memory storage requirements are greatly reduced, since the computational region is analyzed in one dimension. A WG-90 rectangular waveguide with a thick asymmetric iris is analyzed by Finite-Difference Time-Domain(FDTD) simulations with the conventional PML and the proposed one-dimensional (1-D) PML. Numerical results show that the computational efficiency is significantly improved by the proposed method.

  • This paper presents the complex antenna factor of a top-hat EMI monopole antenna for measuring time domain electromagnetic fields. The approach is facilitated by adding a artificial parallel ground plane above the monopole antenna. This allows use of cylindrical harmonic field expansions in each of three subregions enclosed by the two ground plane. The results show that the complex antenna factor of the top-hat monopole antenna does not diverge at low frequencies. When compared with a monopole antenna, the top-hat monopole antenna has broadband characteristics. In order to verify the availability of the mode-matching method, the input impedance of the antenna were compared with experiments.

  • This study investigates vibro-acoustic characteristics of a short, thick cylinder containing a slot given a pined-free boundaries. Using the finite element analysis results, structural modes of the asymmetric cylinder (with a slot) are expressed as the linear combinations of modes of the symmetric cylinder made of same material with identical geometry except the slot. Based on synthesized modal vibrations, acoustic modes of the asymmetric cylinder are obtained with two approaches, i.e., Rayleigh integral calculation and modal expansion of the acoustic modes of the symmetric cylinder. Also, acoustic powers, max. sound pressure and directivity pattern are obtained from acoustic modes and verified with the boundary element analyses. Based on these results, the accuracy of proposed approaches in calculating the vibro-acoustic properties of a short, thick, asymmetric cylinder has been confirmed. The procedure can be applied to the similar cylinders with other boundaries or asymmetric properties. Also, attenuation of vibration and/or sound radiation of the cylinder type practical components can be studied using these approaches.

  • This study presents a new gridless finite difference method for solving elastic crack problems. The method constructs the Taylor expansion based on the MLS(Moving Least Squares) method and effectively calculates the approximation and its derivatives without differentiation process. Since no connectivity between nodes is required, the modeling of discontinuity embedded in the domain is very convenient and discontinuity effect due to crack is naturally implemented in the construction of difference equations. Direct discretization of the governing partial differential equations makes solution process faster than other numerical schemes using numerical integration. Numerical results for mode I and II crack problems demonstrates that the proposed method accurately and efficiently evaluates the stress intensity factors.

  • In this paper, the higher order FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method is used to obtain the frequency response characteristics of the cylindrical metamaterial slab. FDTD method is one of strongest electromagnetic numerical method which is widely used to analyze the metamaterial structure because of its simplicity and the dispersive FDTD equation which has the dispersive effective dielectric constant and permeability are derived to analyze the metamaterials. This derived dispersive FDTD equation has no errors in analyzing the dielectric materials but there are some time and frequency errors in case of analyzing the metamaterials. We used the higher order FDTD method to obtain the accurate frequency response of the metamaterials. Comparisons between the dispersive FDTD method and the higher order FDTD method are performed in this paper also. From the results, we concluded that more accurate frequency response for various metamaterials applications can be obtained using the proposed method in this paper.

  • The displacement field (Optical flow) has been calculated by bottom-up approaches based on local processing. In contrast with them, in this paper, a top-down approach based on expanding in turn from the lowest order mode the whole motion in an image pair of sequential images is proposed. The intensity of medical images usually represents a quantity which is conserved during the motion. Hence sequential images are ideally related by a coordinate transformation. The displacement field can be determined from the generalized moments of the two images. The equations which transform arbitrary generalized moments from a source image to a target image are expressed as a function of the displacement field. The appareent displacement field is then computed iteratively by a projection method which utilizes the functional derivatives of the linearized moment equations. This method is demonstrated using a pair of sequential heart images. For comparative evaluation, we applied Horn and Schunck's method, a standard multigrid method, and our proposed algorithm to sequential image.

  • An analysis of the frequency parameters and vibrational modes is described for a rectangular plate. Double Fourier sine series is used as a modal displacement functions of a rectangular plate and applied to the free vibration analysis of a rectangular plate under various boundary conditions. The frequency parameters obtained by the double Fourier sine series method are compared with those obtained by the theory of finite element method and Ritz method. Frequency parameters are presented for the various aspect ratios for plate. The first four modal shapes for the rectangular plate under various boundary conditions are accurately described.

  • Structural optimization often requires the evaluation of design sensitivities. The Semi Analytic Method(SAM) fur computing sensitivity is popular in shape optimization because this method has several advantages. But when relatively large rigid body motions are identified for individual elements. the SAM shows severe inaccuracy. In this study, the improvement of design sensitivities corresponding to the rigid body mode is evaluated by exact differentiation of the rigid body modes. Moreover. the error of the SAM caused by numerical difference scheme is alleviated by using a series approximation for the sensitivity derivatives and considering the higher order terms. Finally the present study shows that the refined SAM including the iterative method improves the results of sensitivity analysis in dynamic problems.

  • This paper presents a dynamic crack propagation algorithm based on the Moving Least Squares(MLS) difference method. The derivative approximation for the MLS difference method is derived by Taylor expansion and moving least squares procedure. The method can analyze dynamic crack problems using only node model, which is completely free from the constraint of grid or mesh structure. The dynamic equilibrium equation is integrated by the Newmark method. When a crack propagates, the MLS difference method does not need the reconstruction of mode model at every time step, instead, partial revision of nodal arrangement near the new crack tip is carried out. A crack is modeled by the visibility criterion and dynamic energy release rate is evaluated to decide the onset of crack growth together with the corresponding growth angle. Mode I and mixed mode crack propagation problems are numerically simulated and the accuracy and stability of the proposed algorithm are successfully verified through the comparison with the analytical solutions and the Element-Free Galerkin method results.

  • In this paper, electromagnetic scattering by a perfectly conducting strip grating on dielectric multilayers is analyzed for the normalized reflected and transmitted power by applying the Fourier-Galeakin moment method. The induced current density is expanded in a series of multiplication of chebyshev polynomials of the first kind and functions with appropriate edge boundary condition, the continuous condition of electromagnetic field is applied in the boundary planes. The confirm the validity of the proposed method, the nor- malized reflected and transmitted power obtained by varying the relative permittivity and thickness of each dielectric layers are evaluated and compared with those of the existing numerical method and a paper, and then the numerical results in this paper are in good agreement with those of the existing numerical method and the paper. The sharp variation position in the geometrically normalized reflected and transmitted power can be moved by the incident angle, grating period, and the relative permittivity and thickness of the dielectric multilayers, these sharp variation points which are called the Wood's anomaly of the Geome- trically normalized reflected power are observed as a main factor when the reflected powers of the higher order mode are transitted between propagating and evanescent modes, and the local minimum positions are slightly moved to the left hand direction in which grating period is getting small according to the increase of the relative permittivity of dielectric layers.
