  • The effects of stiffeners on the modal characteristics of rectangular plates are investigated. A modeling method for the modal analysis of rectangular plates with stiffeners is presented. A mass density Dirac's delta function is used to idealize the stiffeners mathematically. The equations of motion for the plates are derived and transformed into a dimensionless form. To confirm the accuracy of the method presented in this study, numerical result are obtained and compared to those of a commercial program. The mode shape variations due to some parameter variations are also exhibited.

  • This paper reports the first-of-its-kind free vibration solutions for sectorial plates having re-entrant corners causing stress singularities when the circular edge is either clamped or simply supported. The Ritz method is employed with two sets of admissible functions assumed for the transverse vibratory displacements. Accurate frequencies and normalized contours of the transverse vibratory displacement are presented for the spectra of sector angles.

  • In this paper, a method for identifying the location and extent of a damage in a structure using residual forces was presented. Element stiffness matrix reduction parameters in a finite element model were used to describe the damaged structure mathematically. The element stiffness matrix reduction parameters were determined by minimizing a global error derived from dynamic residual vectors, which were obtained by introducing a simulated experimental data into the eigenvalue problem. Genetic algorithm was used to get the solution set of element stiffness reduction parameters. The proposed scheme was verified using Euler-Bernoulli beam. The results were presented in the form of tables and charts.

  • The purpose of this paper is to verify a finite element model of an automotive exhaust system using Modal testing. In general, a lot of finite element models are used in initial design step of automotive development. One of them is a finite element model of an exhaust system. Verification on the finite element model of an automotive exhaust system is indispensable. In this paper, a finite element analysis on the exhaust system using MSC/NASTRAN is carried out, and the results are compared with those obtained by modal testing. By comparing MAC values of the analytical modes with the experimental modes, the finite element model of the automotive exhaust system is verified.

  • The receptance method was applied for the analysis of a cylindrical shell with a spherical cap attached at an arbitrary axial position of the shell. The boundary condition of the shell considered here was clamped-free condition. Before the analysis of the shell/spherical cap combined structure, natural frequencies of the cap and the shell were calculated separately and then they were used in the calculation of the frequencies of the combined structure by the receptance method. • A new algorithm for determining optimal accelerometer locations is proposed by using a frequency-domain Hankel matrix which is much simpler to construct than a time-domain Hankel matrix. The algorithm was examined through simulation studies by comparing the outcomes with those from other available methods. To compare and analyze the results from different methods, a dynamic analysis was carried out under seismic excitation and acceleration data were obtained at the selected optimal sensor locations. Vibrational amplitudes at the selected sensor locations were determined and those of all the other degrees of freedom were determined by using a spline function. MAC index of each method was calculated and compared to look at which method could determine more effective locations of accelerometers. The proposed frequency-domain Hankel matrix could determine reasonable selection of accelerometer locations compared with the others.

  • In this study, a finite element (FE) model updating method based on the hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) is proposed to improve the grillage FE model for plate girder bridges. HGA consists of a genetic algorithm (GA) and direct search method (DS) based on a modification of Nelder & Mead's simplex optimization method (NMS). Fitness functions based on natural frequencies, mode shapes, and static deflections making use of the measurements and analytical results are also presented to apply in the proposed method. In addition, a multi-objective function has been formulated as a linear combination of fitness functions in order to simultaneously improve both stiffness and mass. The applicability of the proposed method to girder bridge structures has been verified through a numerical example on a two-span continuous grillage FE model, as well as through an experimental test on a simply supported plate girder skew bridge. In addition, the effect of measuring error is considered as random noise, and its effect is investigated by numerical simulation. Through numerical and experimental verification, it has been proven that the proposed method is feasible and effective for FE model updating on plate girder bridges.

  • In this study, the delamination analysis has been implemented to investigate the initiation and propagation of crack in composite laminates composed of orthotropic materials. A simple modeling was achieved by moving nodal technique without re-meshing work when crack propagation occurred. This paper aims at achieving two specific objectives. The first is to suggest a very simple modeling scheme compared with those applied to conventional h-FEM based models. To verify the performance of the proposed model, analysis of double cantilever beams with composite materials was implemented and then the results were compared with reference values in literatures. The second one is to investigate the behavior of interior delamination problems using the proposed model. To complete these objectives, the full-discrete-layer model based on Lobatto shape functions was considered and energy release rates were calculated using three-dimensional VCCT(virtual crack closure technique) based on linear elastic fracture mechanics.

  • In this paper, wave energy absorption of OWC(oscillating water column) device is analyzed. The analytic model consists of a partially immersed circular vertical cylinder open at its end and an air turbine connected with the air chamber. The boundary value problem is decomposed into scattering problem related to scattering by an incident wave in the absence of a pressure variation and radiation problem describing the flow due to an oscillating pressure in the absence of an incident wave. By invoking the continuity of an air flow inside the chamber, the oscillating pressure in a chamber is derived. With oscillating pressure, the mean power absorbed by OWC device and the capture width are obtained. In numerical calculation, the induced volume flux across the internal free surface of the chamber in the scattering and radiation problem and the maximum capture width are compared with various design parameters such as radius and submergence depth of chamber and wave conditions. The maximum capture width obtained by choosing the optimal value of turbine constant occurs at the first resonant mode (Helmholtz mode) among the natural frequencies of a circular cylinder chamber.

  • A bushing is a device used in automotive suspension systems to reduce the load transmitted from the wheel to the frame of the vehicle. A bushing is a hollow cylinder, which is bonded to a solid steel shaft at its inner surface and a steel sleeve at its outer surface. The relation between the force and moment applied to the shaft and the relative deformation and rotational angle of a bushing exhibits features of viscoelasticity. Since a moment-rotational angle relation for a bushing is important for multibody dynamics numerical simulations, the simple relation between the moment and rotational angle has been derived from experiment. It is shown that the predictions by the proposed moment-rotational angle relation are in very good agreement with the experimental results.
