  • Using the Selective Area Growth (SAG) technology of Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD), we successfully integrated an active device and passive devices on the same substrate. In other words, we integrated a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) as an active device and an S-bend waveguide and a Multi Mode Interference (MMI) waveguide as passive devices. The SOA is successfully integrated with passive devices on the same substrate. The Cross-Gain Modulation (XGM) characteristic of the integrated SOA and the loss of an MMI and an S-bend waveguide were measured. Measured XGM characteristics of the SOA showed an extinction ratio of 8.82 dB. The total loss of the MMI and S-bend waveguide was 18 dB.

  • In this paper, to eliminate intersymbol interference of the received signal due to multipath propagation, a parallel equalization algorithm using two error estimation functions is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, multilevel two-dimensional signals are considered as equivalent binary signals, then error signals are estimated using the sigmoid nonlinearity effective at the initial phase equalization and threshold nonlinearity with high steady-state performance. The two errors are scaled by a weight depending on the relative accuracy of the two error estimations, then two filters are updated differentially. As a result, the combined output of two filters was to be the optimum value, fast convergence at initial stage of equalization and low steady-state error level were achieved at the same time thanks to the combining effect of two operation modes smoothly. Usefulness of the proposed algorithm was verified and compared with the conventional method through computer simulations.

  • Adaptive channel equlization accomplished without resorting to a training sequence is known as blind equalization. In this paper, in order to reduce the speed of the convergence and the steady-state mean squared error simultaneously, we propose the multi-stage RD(radius-directed) algorithm derived from the combination of the constant modulus algorithm and the radius-directed algorithm. In the starting stage, multi-stage RD algorithm are identical to the constant modulus algorithm which guarantees the convergence of the equalizer. As the blind identical to the constant modulus algorithm which guarantees the convergence of the equalizer. As the blind equalizer converges, the number of the level of the quantizers is increased gradually, so that the proposed algorithm operate identical to the radius-directed algorithm which leads to the low error power after the covnergence. Therefore, the multi-stage RD algorithm obtains fast convergence rage and low steady stage mean square error.

  • In this paper, we proposed new sensor network architecture with autonomous robots based on beacon mode and implemented real time monitoring system in real test-bed environment. The proposed scheme offers beacon based real-time scheduling for reliable association process with parent nodes and dynamically assigns network address by using NAA (Next Address Assignment) mechanism. For the large scale multi-sensor processing, our real-time monitoring system accomplished the intelligent database processing, which can generate not only the alert messages to the civilians but also process various sensing data such as fire, air, temperature and etc. Moreover, we also developed mobile robot which can support network mobility. Though the performance evaluation by using real test-bed system, we illustrate that our proposed system demonstrates promising performance for emergence monitoring systems.

  • This paper presents recent trends in system-level EMC investigation and countermeasure technology for radio frequency interference (RFI) influenced by noise generated in high-speed digital system. Recently, as the only digital device can perform various roles, there are a variety of EMI/EMC problems between systems. Especially, RFI is now recognized as a major problem, which occurs by EMI caused by the digital system. Therefore, in this paper, recent trends of RFI investigation from component-level to system-level are introduced and analyzed. Furthermore, in order to solve the RFI problem, recent researches are presented and investigated for the occurrences and suppression methods of common-mode noise which is one of the major noise sources in high-speed digital system. Lastly, this paper suggested future research of system-level EMC analysis and countermeasure technology for RFI problems.

  • The interferometric fiber optic gyroscopes (FOGs) are well known as sensors of rotation, which are based on Sagnac effect, and have been under development for a number of years to meet a wide range of performance requirements. This paper describes the development of open-loop FOG and digital signal processing techniques implemented on FPGA. Our primary goal was to obtain intermediate accuracy (pointing grade) with a good bias stability (0.22deg) and scale factor stability, extremely low angle random walk (0.07deg) and significant cost savings by using a single mode fiber. A secondary goal is to design all digital FOG signal processing algorithms with which the SNR at the digital demodulator output is enhanced substantially due to processing gain. The Cascaded integrator bomb(CIC) type of decimation filter only requires adders and shift registers, low cost processors which has low computing power still can used in this all digital FOG processor.

  • The very large vessels like VLCC and container ship have been built recently and those vessels have smaller structural strength in comparison with the other convectional skips. As a result the fatigue destruction of upper deck occurs a frequently due to the springing phenomenon at the encountering frequencies. In this study, the hydrodynamic loads are calculated by three-dimensional source distribution method with the translating and pulsating Green function. A ship is longitudinally divided into 23 sections and the added mass, damping and hydrodynamic force of each section is calculated. focusing only on the vertical motion. Stiffness matrix is calculated by the Euler beam theory. The calculation is carried out for Esso Osaka.

  • In this paper the performance of a array invariant method is evaluated for source-range estimation in horizontally stratified shallow water ocean waveguide. The method has advantage of little computationally effort over existing source-localization methods. such as matched field processing or the waveguide invariant and array gain is fully exploited. And. no knowledge of the environment is required except that the received field should not be dominated by purely interference This simple and instantaneous method is applied to simulated acoustic propagation filed for testing range estimation performance. The result of range estimation according to the SNR for the underwater impulsive source with broadband spectrum is demonstrated. The spatial smoothing method is applied to suppress the effect of mutipath propagation by high frequency signal. The result of performance test for range estimation shows that the error rate is within 20% at the SNR above 10dB.

  • This paper presents a result of failure analysis and reliability evaluation for high voltage ceramic capacitors. The failure modes and failure mechanisms were studied in two ways in order to estimate component life and failure rate. The causes of failure mechanisms for zero resistance phenomena under withstanding voltage test in high voltage ceramic capacitors molded by epoxy resin were studied by establishing an effective root cause failure analysis. Particular emphasis was placed on breakdown phenomena at the ceramic-epoxy interface. The validity of the results in this study was confirmed by the results of accelerated testing. Thermal cycling test for high voltage ceramic capacitor mounted on a magnetron were implemented. Delamination between ceramic and epoxy, which might cause electrical short in underlying circuitry, can occur during curing or thermal cycle. The results can be conveniently used to quickly identify defective lots, determine $B_{10}$ life estimation each lot at the level of inspection, and detect major changes in the vendors processes. Also, the condition for dielectric breakdown was investigated for the estimation of failure rate with load-strength interference model.

  • Mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy, particularly Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), has emerged as an important analytical tool in quantification as well as identification of multi-atomic inorganic ions such as nitrate. In the present study, the possibility of quantifying soil nitrate via diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) without change of a sample phase or with least treated samples was examined. Four types of soils were spectrally characterized in terms of unique bands of soil contents and interferences with nitrate bands in the range of $2000-1000cm^{-1}$. In order to reduce the effects of soil composition on calibration model for nitrate, spectra transformed to the 1st order derivatives were used in the partial least squared regression (PLSR) model and the classification procedure associated with input soil types was involved in calibration system. PLSR calibration models for each soil type provided better performance results ($R^2$>0.95, RPD>6.0) than the model considering just one type of soil as a standard.
