  • The purpose of this study is to analyze characteristics of water quality factor scientifically and develop the multiple regression model predicting dissolved oxygen to save periodic replacement costs for dissolved oxygen sensor. Correlation analysis using the environmental data obtained from 2 different land-based fish farms of the Geogeum-do, Geheung-gun coastal area during the periods from November 2008 to January 2009 shows that water temperature was negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen and pH butpH was positively correlated with salinity and dissolved oxygen. The information of Keumho fish farm in 2009 is presented by the tables which are monthly statistics of water quality factors and seasonable difference by the Duncan's post-test. Also we developed multiple regression model predicting dissolved oxygen, the usefulness of which was verified by the comparison graph between estimates and actual observations. The developed regression model shows that seawater temperature and salinity give negative affect to dissolved oxygen while pH gives positive affect to it. Lastly the seawater temperature has much higher explanatory power than pH factor.

  • In this study, growth changes of the diameter at breast height (DBH), height, basal area, volume, and biomass of Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis Siebold & Zucc.) on a plantation were examined via long-term monitoring. In addition, this study was performed to provide the basic data for timber production in line with DBH class by comparing the growth of the relative DBH size. Growth characteristics according to DBH class were analyzed by categorizing trees into five classes based on sorted DBH rankings: class I (1%-20%; upper 20%), class II (21%-40%), class III (41%-60%), class IV (61%-80%), class V (81%-100%; lower 20%). A total class (0%-100%) was also used. Total increment and mean annual increment (MAI) were calculated using data from nine measurements taken over 39 years. Tree characteristics based on average values and stand characteristics based on unit area per hectare were examined. According to the total increments of variables, the differences in DBH, basal area, volume, and biomass among classes I-V increased over time, whereas the height difference did not continually increase. According to MAI, the maximum DBH value was 0.92 cm·yr-1 at age 23 in class I, whereas the maximum value in all trees was 0.69 cm·yr-1 at age 17. The maximum value of height MAI for class I was 0.52 m·yr-1 at age 23, whereas that for all trees was 0.49 m·yr-1 at age 20. In terms of basal area, volume, and biomass growth at tree-and stand-level, the maximum MAI of class I and all trees was not observed during the measurement period. Therefore, additional long-term monitoring data are required to determine the maximum MAI of the variables.

  • In the automobile industry, in order to increase the fuel efficiency and conform to the safety regulations, it is necessary to make the vehicles as light as possible. Therefore, it is crucial to manufacture dual phase steels, complex phases steels, MS steels, TRIP steels, and TWIP from high strength steels with a tensile strength of 700Mpa or more. In order to apply ultra-high tensile strength steel to the body, the welding process is essential. Resistance spot welding, which is advantageous in terms of its cost, is used in more than 80% of cases in body welding. It is generally accepted that ultra-high tensile strength steel has poor weldability, because its alloy element content is increased to improve its strength. In the case of the resistance spot welding of ultra-high tensile steel, it has been reported that the proper welding condition area is reduced and interfacial fracture and partial interfacial fracture occur in the weld zone. Therefore, research into the welding quality judgment that can predict the defect and quality in real time is being actively conducted. In this study, the dynamic resistance of the weld was monitored using the secondary circuit process variables detected during resistance spot welding, and the factors necessary for the determination of the welding quality were extracted from the dynamic resistance pattern. The correlations between the extracted factors and the weld quality were analyzed and a regression analysis was carried out using highly correlated pendulums. Based on this research, a regression model that can be applied to the field was proposed.

  • This study investigates three buildings arranged alongside at the same level, namely, the Josadang, the Buljojeon, and the Palsangjeon. Their backside is blocked by an embankment with an environmental condition unsuitable for wooden buildings. The pillar behind the Josadang had termite damage for which termite damage and environmental investigations had been conducted for the past four years. The termite damage was monitored four times using the termite detection dogs, and the environmental factors were surveyed 27 times, except during the winter season. As a result, the locations of the columns with a high frequency of responses from the termite detection dogs were found and damage was confirmed. According to the surface moisture content investigations, the surface moisture content was highest in the Josadang and lowest in the Buljojeon. After a statistical analysis, the mean, the median, and the mode values were compared. The difference between the mean and the median was found to be less, however, the mode varied significantly. The mode values of the Josadang and the Palsangjeon were 14.5% and 10.8%, respectively, higher than the 6.1% mode value of the Buljojeon. It was concluded that the temperature and the water content affected the termite damage, which increases if the temperature and the water content remain constant owing to the environmental factors.

  • In this study, the water quality parameters of Geum-river were estimated using Landsat 8 satellite image data which had launched in March 2013. The goal of this research is to predict HAB and to monitor spatial pattern of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) because both TN and TP are the dominant factors of the growth of harmful algal blooms (HABs). To investigate the relationship between satellite band reflectance and in situ measurement value, Pearson' correlation coefficient analysis was used. The band2, 3, 4 and 5 reflectance values among 11 bands of Landsat 8 were used which was highly associated with detecting TN and TP. The 20 in situ data set with satellite's overpass time were identified. TN showed positive relation with band 2 (0.48), band3 (0.62), band4 (0.57) at a significance level of p<0.05. TP also showed high correlation for band2 (0.59), band3 (0.59), band4 (0.58) at a significance level of p<0.01. The optimal regression equation models were constructed for TN and TP based on multiple regression equations. The estimated concentration based on derived regression equations of TN and TP were compared with in situ measurement data. Finally, the spatial pattern of the two parameters was able be monitored through mapping on November 12, 2013 and April 21, 2014.

  • Greenhouse gas (GHG) emission from agricultural lands is recognized as one of important factors of global warming. The objective of this short communication was to evaluate the applicability of different soil GHG emission prediction models on agricultural systems in Korea. Four models, namely, DNDC, DAYCENT, EXPERT-N and COUP, were selected and the basic structure (e.g., components and sub-model), input variables, and output variables were compared. In particular, the availability and compilation of essential input variables were assessed. Major input variables needed for operating these predictive models were found to be available through database systems established by national organizations such as the Korea Meteorological Administration, the Korean Soil Information System, and the Rural Development Administration. However, in order to apply these models in Korea, it was necessary to calibrate and validate each of the models for the domestic landscape settings and climate conditions. In addition, field data of long-term monitoring of GHG emission from agricultural lands are limited and therefore should be measured.

  • Fluoroquinolone (FQ) resistant gram-negative pathogens have emerged worldwide, and the recent increase in FQ resistant Escherichia coli is of great concern in Korea. This study investigated FQ resistance determinants and the epidemiological relationship of 56 ciprofloxacin-resistant E. coli isolated from a tertiary hospital in Daejeon, South Korea from June to December 2018. Molecular epidemiology was investigated by multilocus sequence typing (MLST). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequence analysis were performed to identify chromosomal mutations in the quinolone resistance determining regions (QRDR) of gyrA, gyrB, parC, and parE and to describe the occurrence of the following plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes: aac(6)-Ib-cr, qepA, qnrA, qnrB, qnrC, qnrD, and qnrS. MLST analysis showed 12 sequence types (STs) and the most prevalent ST was ST131 (31/56, 55.4%), followed by ST1193 (13/56, 23.2%), and ST405 (3/56, 5.4%). In 56 ciprofloxacin-resistant E. coli isolates, Ser83→Leu and Asp87→Asn in gyrA and Ser80→Ile and Glu84→Val in parC (51.8%, 29/56) were the most frequent amino acid substitutions and aac(6)-Ib-cr (33.9%, 19/56) was the most common PMQR gene. These results of FQ resistance determinants were more frequently observed in ST131 compared with other clones. Continuous monitoring of the epidemiological characteristics of ciprofloxacin-resistant E. coli isolates and further investigation of FQ resistance determinants are necessary.

  • Agroforestry is an ecological and economic land-use system that enables sustainable agriculture by combining forestry, agriculture, and livestock industries. North Korea chose agroforestry as a strategy for the restoration of sloping land and deforested land. Agroforestry was proposed for the inter-Korean forest cooperation subcommittee meeting and is currently highlighting carbon removal and promoting the '2050 Carbon Neutral Strategy' and 'Korea Peninsula Green Détente.' The study area, Suan-gun, Hwanghaebuk-do, is a constant deforestation monitoring area and a pilot site for management by the International Center for Research in Agroforestry. The requirements for agroforestry were analyzed through literature analysis. The agroforestry site-suitability map was visualized by applying GIS overlap analysis. Approximately 8,839 ha of sloping area was selected as suitable for agroforestry management, which is about 15% of Suan. We compared the map with Google Earth images and visually detected the land use status, such as agroforestry in Suan, to verify the results. As a future study, we will consider both natural-environment and socioeconomic factors and evaluate the relative importance of the factors to produce a high-accuracy agroforestry sitesuitability map at the national scale with the goal of producing basic data for the inter-Korea forest cooperation policy for long-term goals.

  • The ecological environmental zones in coastal area, like tidal flat and salt marsh, were gradually decreased due to large scale of coastal development projects, reclamation and so on. Therefore, the development of artificial tidal flat and salt marsh has been emphasized in coastal area as mitigation concept and studies on related this background has performed. But studies on the quantitative evaluation for degree of restoration were insufficient. In this paper, as a fundamental study for evaluation of restoration on the creation of ecological environmental zones in coastal area, it was conducted that the monitoring and experiment for bio-chemical factors (bio-diversity, population and biomass of macro-benthos, survival ratio of reed, the number of heterotrophic bacteria and physico-chemical characteristics such as COD, IL, TN, TP and pH) using a in-situ pilot plant of tidal flat (Zone. P1) and salt marsh (Zone. P2), which was distinguished by content of dredged soil, in Jinudo, Nakdong estuary. From results of this study, the restoration index (RI), for evaluation concerning degree of restoration on the creation of ecological environmental zones in coastal area, was suggested and quantitative evaluation was performed using a restoration index (RI).

  • Purpose Acute cholecystitis is a complication of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) that occasionally requires surgical intervention. We aimed to analyze the incidence and risk factors of cholecystitis requiring surgical intervention in patients with embolic material uptake on cone beam CT (CBCT) performed immediately after various TACE procedures. Materials and Methods After a retrospective review of 2633 TACE procedures performed over a 6-year period, 120 patients with embolic material retention in the gallbladder wall on CBCT immediately after TACE were selected. We analyzed the incidence of and risk factors for acute cholecystitis. Results The overall incidence of acute cholecystitis requiring surgical intervention was 0.45% (12 of 2633 TACE procedures); however, it was present in 10% (12 of 120) of procedures that showed high-density embolic material retention in the gallbladder wall on CBCT performed immediately after TACE. Acute cholecystitis requiring surgical intervention occurred in eight patients (66.7%) who underwent direct cystic arterial embolization. Surgical intervention was performed 15 days (mean) after TACE. Conclusion Most unintended chemolipiodol deposits in the gallbladder wall resolved without intervention or surgery. However, superselective direct cystic arterial chemoembolization was associated with a high incidence of acute cholecystitis requiring surgery, and patients who undergo this procedure should be closely monitored.
