  • This study was conducted to evaluate effects of halogenated compounds on in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics and methane emissions. A fistulated Holstein cow of 650 kg body weight was used as a donor of rumen fluid. Five kinds of halogenated compounds (bromochloromethane (BCM), 2-bromoethane sulfonic acid (BES), 3-bromopropanesulfonic acid (BPS), chloroform (CLF), and pyromellitic diimide (PMDI) known to inhibit methyl-coenzyme M reductase activity were added to an in vitro fermentation incubated with rumen fluid. The microbial population including bacteria, protozoa, and fungi were enumerated, and gas production including methane and fermentation characteristics were observed in vitro. The pH values ranged from 6.25 to 6.72 in all the treatments, and these showed a similar level at 48 hr. The total gas production in the treatments showed a similar pattern with C at 48 hr, whereas methane production in the treatments was lower (p<0.05) than C. Concentrations of total volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and propionic acid were higher (p<0.05) in the treatments than in C at 12 hr. Therefore, halogenated compounds (BCM, BES, BPS, CLF, and PMDI) inhibited in vitro methane emissions by inhibiting methanogens in the rumen. Further studies on safety are needed.

  • We have studied the reforming of carbon dioxide with methane over various supported nickel catalysts. The nickel supported on natural zeolite showed the highest activity and the nickel on acidic support showed higher activity and slow deactivation compared to nickel on basic support. The activity of nickel on natural zeolite increased with increasing loading ratio and showed almost constant activity above 10wt.% loading of nickel. The conversion and yield of products were affected by the mole ratio of reactants and the highest yields of CO and $H_2$ were obtained at $CH_4/CO_2=1$. The deactivation of catalyst was caused by deposition of coke which was formed by the decomposition of methane. The shape of coke was shown to be whisker tripe carbon, and it brought out the slow deactivation of catalyst.

  • This study examined the improvement of anaerobic digestion rate and sludge reduction as a result of the addition of anaerobic digestion with thickened sludge and solution of VFAs obtained from food waste. The methane production rate of the digestion system was 2.21 times higher when anaerobic digestion reactor injected into anaerobes with VFAs from food wastes of 5 percent. Also, The reduction of the amount of concentrated sludge injected will proceed rapidly because of the TCOD concentration in the digestion reactor was more than twice higher. Indirectly it was shown that the increased production system contributed significantly to the methane production efficiency.

  • The oxidative coupling of methane was studied kinetically using $Na^+(50wt%)/MgO$ catalyst at 710, 730, 750, 770 and $790^{\circ}C$ in a fixed bed flow reactor at the atmospheric pressure under differential conversion conditions. Through curve fitting, it was found that the Langmuir-Hinshelwood type mechanism was fitted to this reaction rather than Rideal-Redox type or Eley-Rideal type mechanism. Therefore, it was proposed that the $O_2{^-}$ or $O_2{^{2-}}$ species on the surface was related to the production of $CH_3{\cdot}$. The estimated activation energy of $CH_3{\cdot}$ production was about 39.3kcal/mol. Moreover, as the result of curve fitting, the stoichiometric coefficient of $O_2$ for the production of $CH_3{\cdot}$ to produce $CO_x$was approximately 1.5. Accordingly, it could be concluded that the $CH_3O_2{\cdot}*$ was prouduced through the partial oxidation of $CH_3{\cdot}$ with the surface oxygen.

  • Benzalkonium chloride is most widely used in S. Korea as a disinfectant in livestock husbandry. Inhibition of biogas potentials were investigated with three different doses of benzalkonium chloride in swine slurry. The system was operated at batch mode. The inhibition rates were 10%, 30~40% and >70% at the dose of 10ppm, 40ppm and 80ppm, respectively assuming it was zero percent in case of no dose. Enzymatic activities were analyzed to determine the enzymatic type which was inhibited by benzalkonium chloride. The acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and protease were shown negatively correlated with biogas potential. Correlation of ${\alpha}$-glucosidase and biogas potentials was observed not high (p<0.01, r=-0.426) while benzalkonium chloride (r=-0.853, p<0.01) and acid phosphatase (p<0.01) with biogas potentials were significantly and negatively correlated. The effect of benzalkonium chloride on Escherichia coli were also evaluated by disc diffusion method. As increase of benzalkonium concentration, inhibition zone of anaerobic bacteria was extended. It revealed that benzalkonium chloride significantly deteriorated biogas potential through inhibition of acetogenic bacteria.

  • The synergistic effect of ethylene/propane and ethylene/methane mixtures on soot formation is studied experimentally with a concentric co-flow burner. The integrated soot volume fractions, laser light scattering signal and PAH concentrations are measured for different fuel supply configurations. The synergistic effect in ethylene/propane diffusion flames is found to be affected not only by the composition of mixture but also by the way of mixing. Comparing to the homogeneously mixed ethylene/propane case, the increase of soot formation is observed when propane is supplied through the inner nozzle, while the decrease is observed when propane is supplied through the outer nozzle. However, the measured PAH concentration distributions are inconsistent with the current view of the synergistic effect of ethylene./propane mixture on soot formation. Virtually no synergistic effect is observed in ethylene-methane flames regardless of the fuel supply configuration, which suggests the important role of $C_3$ species produced during the propane pyrolysis process for the synergistic effect.

  • This study was carried out to develope a pre-treatment technology for anaerobic digestion. Breaking down large particles into smaller particles enhances the performance of anaerobic digestion by increasing the hydrolysis of particles. A degree of hydrolysis is the most important factor determining the overall efficiency of methane production. Three types of pre-treatment devices (blade-type crusher, ozonization system, cavitation system) were set up and operated to crush solids in pig slurry in order to enhance biodegradability. The effect of pre-treatment on decreasing granular size within pig slurry by three experimental devices were compared. The highest performance of granulization of pig slurry was attained in a combination of blade-type crusher and ozonization system. In batch experiment, there was an improvement of the methane potential by combined pretreatment with crusher and cavitation. In case of pre-treated slurry, biogas and methane production were 325.9 L and 59.7% respectively, while, in untreated slurry, the production were lower; 298.8 L and 55.7%, respectively. These results indicate that higher anaerobic digestion efficiency of pig slurry can be obtained through the pre-treatment.

  • A chemical reactor model (CRM) was developed for a jet stirred reactor (JSR) to predict the emission of exhaust such as NOx. In this study, a two-PSR model was chosen as the chemical reactor model for the JSR. The predictions of NO formation in lean premixed methane-air combustion in the JSR were carried out by using CHEMKIN and GRI 3.0 methane-air combustion mechanism which include the four NO formation mechanisms. The calculated results were compared with Rutar's experimental data for the validation of the model. The effects of important parameters on NO formation and the contributions of the four NO pathways were investigated. In the flame region, the major pathway is the prompt mechanism, and in the post flame region, the major pathway is the Zelodovich mechanism. Under the lean premixed condition, the N2O mechanism is the important pathway in both flame and postflame regions.

  • In this study, spent mushroom substrate (SMS), which consits of lignocellulosic material, was pretreated by hydrothermal method; the changes of biodegradability and methane production yield of pretreated SMS were determined according to formation of lignocellulosic biomass degrading byproducts formation during thermal pretreatment. Based on the results, all hydrothermal pretreatment temperatures showed improved solubilization performance for biomass, and the optimum pretreatment effect was observed at an pretreatment temperature of 150℃ with the highest methane production yield. However, the induced formation of furan derivatives (i.e., 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and furfural) as byproducts during hydrolysis of hemicellulose and cellulose at severe condition lowered biodegradability and methane yield when the hydrothermal pretreatment temperature was higher than 180℃. Thus, this study revealed that hydrothermal pretreatment could promote anaerobic digestion efficiency of lignocellulosic biomass and is of great importance for preventing byproducts formation through pretreatment condition control.

  • This study describes a preliminary evaluation of the anti-inflammatory activity of Castanopsis cuspidata extracts. C. cuspidata was extracted using 80% ethanol and then fractionated sequentially with n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethylacetate, and butanol. To screen for anti-inflammatory agents effectively, we first examined the inhibitory effect of the C. cuspidata extracts on the production of pro-inflammatory factors and cytokines stimulated with lipopolysaccharide. In addition, we examined the inhibitory effect of C. cuspidata extracts on pro-inflammatory mediators (NO, iNOS, COX-2) in murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells. The amounts of protein levels were determined by immunoblotting. Of the sequential solvent fractions of C. cuspidata, the n-hexane, dichloromethane and ethylacetate fractions inhibited the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-$1{\beta}$ and IL-6), production of NO, and the protein level of iNOS and COX-2. These results suggest that C. cuspidata may have significant effects on inflammatory factors and may be provided as a possible anti-inflammatory therapeutic plant.
