This research is designed to analyze the metacognitive thinking that mathematically gifted elementary students use to solve problems, study the effects of the metacognitive function on the problem-solving process, and finally, present how to activate their metacognitive thinking. Research conclusions can be summarized as follows: First, the students went through three main pathways such as ARE, RE, and AERE, in the metacognitive thinking process. Second, different metacognitive pathways were applied, depending on the degree of problem difficulty. Third, even though students who solved the problems through the same pathway applied the same metacognitive thinking, they produced different results, depending on their capability in metacognition. Fourth, students who were well aware of metacognitive knowledge and competent in metacognitive regulation and evaluation, more effectively controlled problem-solving processes. And we gave 3 suggestions to activate their metacognitive thinking.
This study examines the effects of learner's metacognition and scaffolding types on problem solving processes by examined 49 undergraduates to identify effective scaffolding type in Web-based PBL. This study classifies problem solving processes as defining the problem, developing solutions, making selections and justifications for the Proposed solution(s), and monitoring the solution. Moreover, it classifies scaffolding types as subject-related scaffolding and process-related scaffolding. As a result, the upper metacognition group showed higher performance only in monitoring solutions than the lower metacognioon group. This study also showed that offered scaffolding effects are not statistically significant. However, the lower metacognition group showed higher performance when subject-related scaffolding was offered and the upper metacognition group showed higher performance when process-related scaffolding was offered in making selections and justifications for the proposed solution(s) and monitoring solution. This study, based on the result of research, can partially verify the effects of learner's metacognition on problem solving processes and interaction effects between scaffolding and metacogniton in Web-based PBL.

The purposes of this study were to investigate 6th-graders' use of cognitive strategies and metacognitive strategies in usual learning and testing situations, and to compare the difference in the use of the strategies by students' science achievement, learning motivation, and gender. The relationship among these strategies, science achievement, and learning motivation were also examined, and the portion of variance of explanation for achievement score was studied by a multiple regression analysis. The results showed that high-achieving students used more cognitive strategies and metacognitive strategies in usual learning and more cognitive strategies in testing situations than low-achieving students. Highly motivated students used more cognitive and metacognitive strategies than poorly motivated students in all situations. Elementary female students used more learning strategies than male students in usual learning. On the other hand, no gender differences was found to be significant in the use of strategies in testing situations. These learning strategies were significantly correlated with the science achievement and motivation scores. The cognitive strategies in usual learning accounted for the significant portion of the variance of the achievement score. Educational implications are discussed.
Cognitive reserve(CR) is the ability to optimize or maximize performance through complementary brain networks. CR is relevant to normal aging in cognitive-linguistic abilities. There are few domestic systematic reviews or meta-analyses that analyze the relationships between multiple CR and cognitive-linguistic domains in healthy older people. This meta-analysis included 32 studies published since 2000. In result, education level topped the list, followed by the occupation, cognitively stimulating activities, and the multilingualism. Most studies were related to memory, global cognition, and language. CR had a modest positive association with cognitive-linguistic performance. Multiple domains including memory and language also showed the significant correlations across most measures of CR. This study provides evidence-based information to support cognitive-linguistic ability in normal aging.

This study was executed to give a help in planning and implementing online learning. For this purpose this study investigated the effect of contents presentation types, levels and metacognition on concept map composition and learning process in online learning. Learning contents types were two, meaning-centered or context-centered. Contents levels were divided into two; basic or deficient. Metacognition was divided into two levels according to the scores of scale. Results showed that meaning-centered type(M=45.00, SE=1.97) got better scores in concept map than context-centered(M=34.71, SE=1.98), Presentation levels and metacognition had no significant influence on concept map. There were interaction effect(F=.002, p>.05) between presentation levels and metacogntion levels. The upper group in metacognition got higher score in deficient types whereas the lower group got higher score in basic type. In online learning process, learner's metacognition was an important factor to complement the contents' defect and lack.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect on the level of subject interest and interaction when supporting scaffolding considering learner characteristics in PBL. For the study, the participants were 86 college students. The research procedure was as follows. First, we divided the experimental group and the comparative group. A primary PBL was used to measure prior levels of subject interest and interaction. Secondary PBL was performed to verify treatment effect. In the second PBL, the experimental group received cognitive, metacognitive, and motivation scaffolding that reflected the learner's characteristics. The control group received random scaffolding. Subject interest and interaction were measured after the end of the second PBL. Collected data were analyzed using ANCOVA. As a result, the interest and interaction level of the experimental group was analyzed to be higher than that of the control group.

Since the mathematics learning achievement level is closely related to problem-solving ability, it is necessary to understand the relationship between problem-solving ability and meta-affect ability from the point of view of general mathematics learning ability. In this study, we compared the frequency analysis and the case analysis of the functional aspects of the meta-affect in elementary school students' problem-solving processes according to mathematics learning achievement level in parallel with frequency analysis and case analysis. In other words, the frequency of occurrence of meta-affect, the frequency of meta-affective type, and the frequency of meta-functional types of meta-affect were compared and analyzed according to the mathematics learning achievement level in the collaborative problem-solving activities of small group members with similar mathematics learning achievement level. In addition, we analyzed the representative cases of meta-affect by meta-functional types according to the mathematics learning achievement level in detail. As a result, meta-affect in problem-solving processes of the upper level group acted as relatively various types of meta-functions compared to the lower level group. And, the lower level group, the more affective factors acted in the problem-solving processes.
The study aimed to investigate elementary school gifted students' hypothesis-generating ability and characteristics of hypotheses and to analyze the correlation between hypothesis-generating ability and meta-cognition. Nineteen students enrolled in a science gifted education center affiliated with a university in 2013 were selected as research subjects. An instrument of open ended items about hypothesis generating was developed and administered to students, and their meta-cognition as well as their preferred science teaching method were examined. Hypotheses generated by students were classified into two categories: scientific and non-scientific hypotheses, and then a closer analysis was conducted on characteristics of non-scientific hypotheses. It was found that 47% (18 out of 38 hypotheses) was scientific ones showing that elementary school gifted students in science in this study presented low level of ability in generating hypothesis. It was also found that non-scientific hypotheses frequently showed characteristics of uncertain in causality or impossible to verify relationships. Furthermore, differences in hypothesis-generating ability and characteristics of hypotheses were appeared in conditions whether inquiry questions and variable identification process were given or not. Students showed high abilities in hypothesis generating and variable identifying when inquiry questions and variable identification process were given. Compared to previous research results, students in the study showed high level of meta-cognition and tendency of utilizing monitoring strategy more than planning and regulating. In ill-structured conditions that students themselves find inquiry questions and identify variables, a significant (p<.05) correlation appeared between hypothesis generating ability and meta-cognition and a high level of correlation between planning and regulating strategies. It was also found that differences existed in hypothesis-generating ability and preferred science teaching methods between students with high level and those with low level of meta-cognition; and students with low level of meta cognition showed difficulties in generating hypothesis and identifying variables.
Metacognition is a core element for nurses' clinical competency as a result of the learner's development and evaluate goals and plans for problem solving. The study aimed to analyze factors related to metacognition among undergraduate nursing students. The 205 nursing students participated from August 15 to October 19, 2017 to measure metacognition, self-directed learning, grit, learning environment and learning style. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression with the SPSS/Win 22.0 program. Metacognition represented a positive correlation with self-directed learning, grit, learning environment. The self-directed learning and grit were significant factors on undergraduate nursing students' metacognition. As a result of this study, it is necessary to develop curriculum that can improve metacognition level by increasing self-directed learning ability and grit of undergraduate nursing student.
