The necessity of effective and economical improvement for soft ground is required more and more as mountains form 70% of country. The soft ground improvement methods for ocean development are sand compaction pile method, displacement method are applied to the soft ground improvement from ocean development pre-loading method, air pressure method, well point method, pack drain method, quicklime pile method etc. Among them, the sand compaction pile method, has many problems such as the economical problem on importing materials due to the lack of sand and destroying the nature while collecting sand. To replace the sand with other alternative materials, a study on the bottom ash compaction pile method because the bottom ash has the similar engineering properties with sand. Therefore, in this study, after compose the complex soil with a replacement rate of 10~80% and a large direct shear test, shear test, consolidation test with replacement rates of bottom ash are performed to estimate whether its shear and consolidation characteristics are suitable for the alternative material of compaction pile method. As a result of test, Shear Strength Parameters tend to be increased in accordance with the increase of replacement ratio of bottom compaction pile, and Settlement Reduction Factor and $t_{90}$ tend to be decreased.
In recent years, vertical extension remodeling of apartment building is considered as one of the efficient ways to broaden and enhance the utilization of existing buildings due to the rapid development of population and decrement of land resources. The reinforcement of foundation is of great importance to bearing the additional load caused by the added floors. However, because of the additional load, the carried load by the existing piles would be in excess of its allowable bearing capacity. In this study, a conceptual construction method called preloading method was presented. The preloading method applies force onto the reinforcing pile before vertical extension construction. The purpose of preloading is to transfer partial load applied on the existing piles to reinforcing piles in order to keep each pile not exceeding the allowable capacity and to mobilize resistance of reinforcing pile by developing relative settlement. The feasibility and effect of preloading method was investigated by using finite numerical method. Two simulation models, foundation reinforcement with preloading and without preloading, were developed through PLAXIS 3D program. Numerical results showed that the presented preloading method is capable of sharing partial carried load of existing pile and develops the mobilization of reinforcing pile's frictional resistance.
Mudstone has characteristics that it has high enough strength and stiffness in a dry condition, but the strength and stiffness decrease in a wet condition with groundwater infiltration. The sliding of cut slope frequently encountered in Pohang area has been reported due to the rapid reduction of shear strength in mudstone after being exposed to the air. The study in this paper shows that mudstone having enough strength in a boring stage has lost the strength after installing PRD (percussion rotary drill) steel pipe pile inducing an insufficient bearing capacity. Field test has been performed to investigate the most favorable method for increasing a pile bearing capacity in mudstone with various methods such as MSG (Micro Silica Grouting) around the tip and side of a pile, the perimeter grouting combined with Micro pile reinforcement, and concrete filling after tip reinforcing grouting. MSG has been turned out to be the most favorable method for increasing a pile bearing capacity in mudstone, confirmed by the static load test.
To increase the bearing capacity of existing auger-drilled piles and decrease the noise and vibration during the installation of the piles, Spirally-reamed and Under-reamed auger trilled piling methods were developed. Field tests were performed to verify the inurement degree of bearing capacity and the constructional possibility of the new augerdrilled piling methods. The test results showed that the bearing capacity of the new augertrilled piles was fairly improved by the grooves of piles, and the skin friction was affected by the groove height and spacing between grooves. It was found that the skin friction takes the great part of total bearing capacity in auger drilled Biles, i.e. 74~80% in case of the existing methods and 81~86% in case of these methods. Moreover, the settlement of spirally-reamed and under reamed piles was smaller than that of the existing augerdrilled pile for the same loading state.
This study verified the stability of a high-strength combined buried pile retaining wall and its applicability in the field. A cast-in-place (C.I.P) retaining wall and the high-strength combined embedded pile retaining wall were compared and analyzed numerically. The numerical analysis assessed the ground behavior and stability (and thus field applicability) of a high-strength combined buried pile retaining wall using data measured in the field. The experimental results showed that the cross-sectional force and displacement of the high-strength bonded pile retaining wall were reduced by 13.6~19.7%, the shear force increased by 0.7~4.7%, and the bending moment increased by 4.5~8.8% relative to the values for the C.I.P retaining wall. Examination of the amount of subsidence in the ground around the excavation showed that the maximum settlement of the C.I.P retaining wall was 46.89 mm and that at the high-strength combined buried pile retaining wall was 39.37 mm. Overall, designing a high-strength combined embedded pile retaining wall by applying the maximum bending moment and shear force calculated using the elastic beam method to the site ground was shown to achieve the safety of all members, as member forces were generated within the elastic region.

In this study, the behavior of self-supported earth retaining wall with stabilizing piles was investigated by using a numerical study and field tests in urban excavations. This earth retaining wall can provide stable support against lateral earth pressures through its use of stabilizing piles that provide passive resistance to lateral earth pressures arising due to ground excavations. Field tests at two sites were performed to verify the performance of instrumented retaining wall with stabilizing piles. Furthermore, detailed 3D numerical analyses were conducted to provide insight into the in situ wall behavior. The 3D numerical methodology in the present study represents the behavior of the self-supported earth retaining wall with stabilizing piles. A number of 3D numerical analyses were carried out on the self-supported earth retaining wall with stabilizing piles to assess the results stemming from wide variations of influencing parameters such as the soil condition, the pile spacing, the distance between the front pile and the rear pile, and the pile embedded depth. Based on the results of the parametric study, the maximum horizontal displacement and the maximum bending moment significantly decreased when the retaining wall with stabilizing piles is used. Moreover, the horizontal displacement reduction effect of influencing parameters such as the pile spacing and the distance between the front pile and the rear pile is more sensitive in sandy soil, with a higher friction angle compared to clayey soil. In engineering practice, reducing the pile spacing and increasing the distance between the front pile and the rear pile can effectively improve the stability of the self-supported earth retaining wall with stabilizing piles.

This study is to evaluate an application of technology to the soft ground stability using quick lime pile in the field. We investigated properties of Korean quick lime by conducting loading test and theoretical consideration about a principle and property of soft ground improvement by quicklime. According to the test results, it was estimated that quick lime pile method has dehydration effect by absorption of quick lime, consolidation effect by swelling of pile, increasing bearing by strength of pile itself and decreasing sinking effect, etc. A material property of quick lime is favorable for construction and considerable strength. In the case of higher strength is required, using cement as additive would increase material strength.
