  • Recently, the frequency of occurring dynamic events such as earthquakes, explosives blasting and other types of vibration has been increasing. Besides, the chances of exposure for rock discontinuities to free faces get higher as the scale of rock mass structures become larger. For that reason, the frictional behavior of rock joints under dynamic conditions needs to be investigated. In this study, artificially fractured rock joint specimens were prepared in order to examine the dynamic frictional behavior of rough rock joint. Roughness of each specimen was characterized by measuring surface topography using a laser profilometer and a series of shaking table tests was carried out. For mated joints, the static friction angle back-calculated ken the yield acceleration was $2.7^{\circ}$ lower than the tilt angle on average. The averaged dynamic friction angle for unmated joints was $1.8^{\circ}$ lower than the tilt angle. Displacement patterns of sliding block were classified into 4 types and proved to be related to the first order asperity of rock joint. The tilt angle and the static friction angle for mated joints seem to be correlated to micro average inclination angle which represents the second order asperity. The tilt angle and the dynamic friction angle for unmated Joints, however, have no correlation with roughness parameters. Friction angles obtained by shaking table test were lower than those by direct shear test.

  • In this study, a series of direct shear tests were performed to investigate the characteristics of friction angles for sands and interface friction angle between sands and construction materials with respect to different relative density of the Nak-dong River sands and shearing velocity. The result of the test shows that friction angles of sands are always higher than interface friction angle between sands and construction materials. As the shearing velocity get faster, the friction angles of sand became higher. With respect to the density of sand by reducing void ratio, friction angles increase linearly, and relevant equations were proposed to calculate the friction angle by changing void ratio and relative density of sand. The interface roughness of construction materials was also an important factor in interface friction angle.

  • In recent years, not only the occurrences but the magnitude of earthquakes in Korea are on an increasing trend and other sources of dynamic events including large-scale construction, operation of hi띤-speed railway and explosives blasting have been increasing. Besides, the probability of exposure fir rock joints to free faces gets higher as the scale of rock mass structures becomes larger. For that reason, the frictional behavior of rock joints under dynamic conditions needs to be investigated. In this study, a shaking table test system was set up and a series of dynamic test was carried out to examine the dynamic frictional behavior of rock joints. In addition, a computer program was developed, which calculated the acceleration and deformation of the sliding block theoretically based on Newmark sliding block procedure. The static friction angle was back-calculated by measuring yield acceleration at the onset of slide. The dynamic friction angle was estimated by closely approximating the experimental results to the program-simulated responses. As a result of dynamic testing, the static friction angle at the onset of slide as well as the dynamic friction angle during sliding were estimated to be significantly lower than tilt angle. The difference between the tilt angle and the static friction angle was $4.5\~8.2^{\circ}$ and the difference between the tilt angle and the dynamic friction angle was $2.0\~7.5^{\circ}$. The decreasing trend was influenced by the magnitude of the base acceleration and inclination angle. A DEM program was used to simulate the shaking table test and the result well simulated the experimental behavior. Friction angles obtained by shaking table test were significantly lower than basic friction angle by direct shear test.

  • In this study, friction angles on the surface of vertical rigid ground anchor in normally consolidated dry sand were measured by model pullout tests in laboratory. Friction angles were obtained from the normal and shear stresses measured along depth of the anchor stir face by attaching several 2-dimensional load cells. Model tests were conducted under the plane strain state and axial symmetric state. From the results of tests, it was concluded that the maximum friction angle on the anchor surface coincides nearly with the maximum angle of stress obliquity on the plane of zero-extension direction obtained by plane strain compression test. This result was made with regard to the strength anisotropy and stress dependency of sand. It showed that when angle of shear resistance of the sand is applied to the friction angle of the anchor surface, the design capacity could be less than the applied force, thus making the anchor unsafe.

  • In this study, a series of triaxial compressive strength tests were conducted for basaltic intact rocks sampled in the northeastern onshore and offshore, southeastern offshore and northwestern offshore of Jeju Island. Hoek-Brown constants $m_i$ were estimated from the results of the triaxial compression tests, and the properties of the Hoek-Brown constants $m_i$ were investigated. In addition, the cohesion and internal friction angle, strength parameters of Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, obtained from the results of the triaxial compression tests were compared and analyzed with those estimated from Hoek-Brown failure criterion, respectively. As results, it was found that the Hoek-Brown constant $m_i$ is deeply related to the internal friction angle. As the internal friction grows, the Hoek-Brown constant $m_i$ increases exponentially. The cohesions estimated from the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, on average, are approximately 24% higher than those obtained from the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The internal friction angles estimated from the Hoek-Brown failure criterion are similar to those obtained from the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion.

  • Through the careful interpretation of the results of the cutting tests carried out in this study, it is found that under the cutting conditions when the internal shear of the chips take place the cutting can be treated essentially as a steady state problem. A new shear angle equation has been developed employing the conditions of force and moment equilibrium about the tool edge and the stress distribution model suggested by Zorev. The equation contains the chip-tool contact length C and stress distribution index n as important parameters.

  • An internal friction angle, which is one of strength parameters of granular soils, can be obtained from direct shear tests or triaxial tests. The result of traixial tests can be influenced by various experimental conditions such as confining pressure, shearing rate, specimen diameter and height, and end constraint. In this study, undrained and drained shearing behaviors of Nakdong River sand were investigated for loose (Dr = 40%) and dense (Dr = 80%) specimens with 5, 7, and 10 cm in diameter. Friction angles such as undrained total stress friction angle, undrained effective stress friction angle, and drained friction angle obtained from Mohr's stress circle slightly increased and then decreased as a diameter of a specimen increased from 5, 7 to 10 cm, regardless of relative densities. The difference between friction angles caused by different specimen size was at maximum 4.5 degrees for undrained total stress friction angle of dense specimen. In most cases, there was little difference between friction angles of large and small specimens, which was less than 2 degrees. The difference between an effective friction angle from undrained tests and a drained friction angle from drained tests was at maximum 7 degrees for loose samples but negligible for dense samples.

  • The purpose of the study was to evaluate how much gastropod shell effected its properties better than crushed stone as coarse grained materials by comparing friction properties of a contact surface between coarse grained materials and geosynthetics with the large-scale direct shear test. To achieve the purpose, the study compared and analyzed friction coefficient and friction angle by making crushed stone or gastropod shell into model ground and by installing and shearing non-woven fabric or geostrip geosynthetics. As the results of the analysis, crushed stone had the internal friction angle of $33.8^{\circ}$ when its unit weight was $13.7kN/m^3$ and gastropod shell had the internal friction angle of $35.4^{\circ}$ when its unit weight was $5.4kN/m^3$. Also, the friction angle of a contact surface between geosynthetics and crushed stone was larger than the friction angle of a contact surface between geosynthetics and gastropod shell.
