  • The purpose of this study was to measure and compare the amount of unreacted TEGDMA from pit and fissure sealants cured with three different light sources; conventional halogen light curing unit, plasma arc light curing unit and argon laser. The specimens were eluted in distilled water for different time intervals. The time-related release of TEGDMA were analyzed by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). The result of present study can be summarized as follows: 1. The time-related release of TEGDMA decreased with increasing curing time in conventional halogen light, however, that not statistically significant difference(p>0.05). 2. The elution from the specimens cured for 6 and 9 seconds with plasma arc light was similar results corresponding with the time-related TEGBMA release, and was significantly lower than that cured for 3 seconds(p<0.05). 3. The elution of TEGDMA from the specimens cured with argon laser was significantly higher than that cured with halogen and plasma arc light(p<0.05). 4. The elution of TEGDMA from under recommended time of three different light sources were showed to be no statistically significant difference(p>0.05). 5. In time-related release of TEGDMA from recommended time of each light sources, the results correspond to 40 seconds of halogen light and 6 seconds of plasma arc light were similar(p>0.05). 6. The elution of TEGDMA, from over recommended time of three different light sources were showed to be no statistically significant difference(p>0.05). In this study, I suggest that curing time of plasma arc light is 6 and/or 9 seconds in the field of clinical pediatric dentistry claiming its effectiveness in optimal polymerization and reduced chair time.

  • A long-exposing technique (LET) has been conducted to create nanoscale patterns applicable to diverse micro-devices using two-photon polymerization (TPP). By the weakly-polymerized region via the LET, double-layered embossing patterns can be fabricated simply in a single step. The LET makes possible a voxel and its surrounding to be fully grown into more than 500 nm in lateral size and weakly-polymerized region (WPR), respectively. In the WPR. interconnecting ribs between voxels are generated, and they lead to the creation of double-layered dot patterns. Moreover, by controlling the distance between voxels, various shapes of interconnecting rib can be fabricated when the LET is applied. Various embossing patterns were fabricated to evaluate the usefulness of the proposed technique as a novel nanopatterning technique in TPP.

  • This in vitro study evaluated the influence of a flowable composite resin on the tensile bond strength of resin to enamel and dentin treated with Er:YAG laser and diamond bur. 96 Buccal enamel and mid-coronal dentin were laser-irradiated using an Er:YAG laser and treated with diamond bur. Each groups(48) were divided two small groups depends on acid-etching procedure. Light-cure flowable resin(Metafil Flo) and self-cure resin(Clearfil FII New Bond) were used in this study. After surface etching with 37% phosphoric acid and the application of an adhesive system, specimens were prepared with a hybrid composite resin. After 24hours storage in distilled water at 37$^{\circ}C$, all samples were submitted to the tensile bond strength evaluation, using a universal testing machine(Z020, Zwick, Germany). The obtained results were as follows: 1. TBS of acid-etching group were higher than those of non-etching group in both enamel and dentin treated with Er:YAG laser and diamond bur. Laser 'conditioning' was clearly less effective than acid-etching. Moreover, acid etching lased enamel and dentin significantly improved the microTBS of M-Flo. 2. In enamel, TBS of laser-irradiated group were lower than those of bur-prepared group. However, in flowable resin subgroup, there were not differed those between two groups in dentin. 3. In laser-treated group, TBS of flowable composite resin were higher than those of self-curing resin in dentin, however, there was no difference in enamel. From this study, we can conclude that the self- and light-cure composite resin bonded significantly less effective to lased than to bur-cut enamel and dentin, and that acid-etch procedure remains mandatory even after laser ablation. We suggest that Er:YAG laser was useful for preparing dentin cavity with flowable resin filling.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a practical caries activity test by fluorescence using laser, plasma light and halogen light. The subjects of study were 45 children of 7-8 years old Argon laser, plasma light and halogen light were irradiated to buccal or labial surface of all teeth. Fluorescence of initial carious lesion from teeth was observed through barrier filter and the number of teeth showing lesion was counted. Visual examination for the dDfFtT, mutans streptococci screening test and Lactobacilli colony counting were also done. Data analysis was accomplished by Axelsson's method. The result from the present study can be summarized as follows. 1. Laser, plasma light and halogen light could detect the initial carious lesions better than visual examination(p<0.05). 2. There was positive correlation between laser(r=0.42), plasma light(r=0.41), halogen light(r=0.39) and dBfFtT rate(p<0.01). 3. The specificity sensitivity and predictive value was showed highest value in laser, but was showed favorable value in plasma light and halogen light. In regard to above results, laser, plasma light and halogen light all considered to be reliable method for determining individual caries activity. And they were also considered to be practical method because it would be simple, inexpensive, and time saving method.

  • Polydiacetylene (PDA) is chemosensor materials that exhibit non-fluorescent-to-fluorescent transition as well as blue-to-red visible color change upon chemical or thermal stress. They have been studied in forms of film or microarray chip, so far. In this paper, we provide a novel technique to fabricate continuous micro-fiber PDA sensor using in-situ laser-polymerization technique and 3-D hydrodynamic focusing on a microfluidic chip. The flow of a monomer solution with diacetylene (DA) monomer is focused by a sheath flow on a 3-D microfluidic chip. The focused flow is exposed to 365 nm UV laser beam for in-situ polymerization which generates a continuous fiber containing DA monomers. Then, the fiber is exposed to 254 nm UV light to polymerize DA monomers to PDA. Preliminary results indicate that the fiber size can be controlled by the flow rates of the monomer solution and sheath flows and that a PDA sensor fiber successively responds to chemical and thermal stress.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare curing efficiency of newly developed curing units to traditional halogen curing unit by measuring thermal change and surface microhardness according to curing light system. Materials and mathods : The types of curing units were traditional low intensity halogen light(Optilux 360), plasma arc light(Flipo), low heat plasma arc light(Aurys), low intensity LED(Starlight), and high intensity LED(Freelight2). Temperature at the tip of light guide was measured by a digital thermometer using K-type thermocouple. And after resin was filled to 2, 3, 4mm teflon mold, bottom temperature measured during curing. After 24 hours, microhardness of top surface and bottom surface of each resin specimen were measured. Results : The result of this study can be summarized as follows, 1. As measuring temperature of curing unit tips, Flipo is the highest as $52.4^{\circ}C,\;Freelight2(37.86^{\circ}C),\;Optilux360(32.68^{\circ}C),\;Aurys(32.34^{\circ}C),\;and\;Starlight(26.14^{\circ}C)$ were followed. 2. Flipo and Freelight2 were the highest similarly and Optilux360 and Aurys were similarly next and Starlight was lowest in temperature of bottom surface of resin mold. 3. Microhardness of top surface were generally similar, and Aurys was relatively low. 4. Optilux 360 and Freelight2 were the highest, and Flipo, Starlight, and Aurys were followed in microhardness of bottom surface. Conclusions : The results suggest that careful use of Flipo and Freelight2 might be able to cure greater depth of resin composite and do not cause thermal problems than other curing units.

  • The laser direct writing method has some advantages of being maskless, allowing rapid and inexpensive prototyping in comparison to conventional mask-based photolithography. In general, there are two kinds of laser direct writing methods such as the laser ablation method and the laser polymerization method. The laser polymerization method was studied fur manufacturing waveguide in this paper. It is important to reduce line width for image mode waveguides, so some investigations will be carried out in various conditions of process parameters such as laser power, writing speed, focusing height and optical properties of polymer. Experimentally, the optical waveguide was manufactured trapezoid shape. Through SEM the waveguide was 20 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ width and 7.4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ height.
