By understanding physiological characters of plants and the environment, plant design should decide the relationship with other plants from the designer's curiosity of the plant's color, texture, form and other aspects. There are a traditional tendency that many designers put the plant's color ahead of other aspects. This study explores 4 gardens of Gertrude Jekyll's Munstead Wood, Vita Sackvill-West's Sissinghurst, Christopher Lloyd's Grest Dixter and Lawrence Johnston's Hidcote Manner. The flower border of Munstead is started with light grey and blue at the edge and it gets stronger colors like red and orange as the line comes to the middle. It is noticeable that white an blue colors were used unlike before. Sissinghurst made use of purple color which was very seldom used before and Dixter added orange to magenta color that was already there, giving a strong visual effect and through juxtaposition it could realize the wanted effect. A strong red border line was created in Hidcote Manner. Above mentioned designers arranged various colors so that visitors can experience different spacial senses according to observer's direction. In the cognitive space the main color and the secondary color arranged leading to the fact that the observer recognizes it as a whole. In plant design time means seasonal performance which influences the main color arrangement like gradation or contrast. Moreover, space determines the color's zone when it comes to plant design.

In this paper we present a Distributed Object oriented Virtual computing Environment, called DOVE which consists of autonomous distributed objects interacting with one another via method invocations based on a distributed object model. DOVE appears to a user logically as a single virtual computer for a set of heterogeneous hosts connected by a network as if objects in remote site reside in one virtual computer. By supporting efficient parallelism, heterogeneity, group communication, single global name service and fault-tolerance, it provides a transparent and easy-to-use programming environment for parallel applications. Efficient parallelism is supported by diverse remote method invocation, multiple method invocation for object group, multi-threaded architecture and synchronization schemes. Heterogeneity is achieved by automatic data arshalling and unmarshalling, and an easy-to-use and transparent programming environment is provided by stub and skeleton objects generated by DOVE IDL compiler, object life control and naming service of object manager. Autonomy of distributed objects, multi-layered architecture and decentralized approaches in hierarchical naming service and object management make DOVE more extensible and scalable. Also, fault tolerance is provided by fault detection in object using a timeout mechanism, and fault notification using asynchronous exception handling methods

Fluoride removal by acid and heat treated red mud were studied in batch and column system regarding contact time, initial concentration, pH, adsorbent dose, and filter depth. The results showed that acid treated with 0.8 M HCl, had highest adsorption capacity of fluoride and adsorption capacity decreased as heat treatment temperature increased. Sorption equilibrium reached in 30 min at a initial concentration of 50 mg-F/L but 1 h was required to reach the sorption equilibrium at the initial concentration of 500 mg-F/L by 0.8 M acid treated red mud (0.8 M-ATRM). Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted well to Langmuir isotherm model with maximum fluoride adsorption capacity of 23.162 mg/g. The fluoride adsorption decreased as pH increased due to the fluoride competition for favorable adsorption site with $OH^-$ at higher pH. Removal percentage was increased but the amount of adsorption per unit mass decreased by adding the amount of 0.8 M-ATRM. It was concluded that the 0.8 M-ATRM could be used as a potential adsorbent for the fluoride removal from aqueous solutions because of its high fluoride adsorption capacity and low cost.
Bacterial wilts, caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, is a very destructive disease to tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum) in Korea. Selection of resistant cultivar is the best way to prevent or reduce the occurrence of this disease. Thirty-nine tomato cultivars, twenty-one cherry tomato cultivars and thirteen rootstock tomato cultivars were inoculated with Ralstonia solanacearum, to evaluate tomato cultivars for resistance against bacterial wilts. Thirty-seven cultivars were highly susceptible to bacterial wilts and 61-100% of their whole tissue became wilted within 10 days after inoculation. Twenty-four cultivars showed moderate resistance and twelve were resistant to bacterial wilts. In an evaluation of 73 major commercial cultivars, 'Lilyance', 'TP-7', 'Choice', 'Dadaki', 'Akiko', 'Redstar', 'Match', 'B-blocking', 'Magnet', 'Support', 'Friend' and 'Special' were found to have a high level of resistance to bacterial wilts of tomatoes.

Kiwifruit has been cultivated in southern coastal regions of Korea since late 1970s. New cultivars have been successively released in recent years. In this study, we investigated major disease and pest incidences in new kiwifruit cultivars 'Goldone', 'Redvita' and 'Garmrok' at open field in Sacheon for 3 years and rain-proof field in Jeju for 2 years. For the bacterial canker, the 3 new cultivars showed more disease occurrence in Sacheon but rare in Jeju. For leaf spot disease, compared to disease incidence of 20% on 'Hayward' in Sacheon, cv. 'Garmrok' had high incidence about 60% but cv. 'Goldone' and cv. 'Redvita' had low incidence less than 20%. However, in Jeju, diseases incidences of all the new cultivars were lesser than 20%. In the case of Hemiptera, many Halyomorpha halys and Nezara antennata appeared in Sacheon but in Jeju Plautia stali was dominated. Isolated bacterial canker pathogen was identified as Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae biovar 3. Leaf spots pathogens were Phomopsis sp., Phoma sp., Fusarium tricinctum and Alternaria alternata. This study shows the disease information on new kiwifruit cultivars and the adequate disease managements will be required.
This study was conducted to establish the efficient screening method for resistant cabbage to Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans. The resistance degrees of nine commercial cabbage cultivars to the disease were evaluated. Among them, five cultivars (YR-honam, Ogane, Greenhot, Redmat, and Ccoccoma) showing different resistance to the fungus were selected. Then development of Fusarium wilt of the cultivars according to several conditions including root wounding, dipping period of roots in spore suspension, inoculum concentration, and incubation temperature to develop the disease was investigated. Highly resistant cultivars such as 'YR-honam' and 'Ogane' hardly showed change of resistance to the disease by root wounding, dipping period, and inoculum concentration, while disease severity of Fusarium wilt on the cultivars was changed with incubation temperatures ($20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$). When the cabbage cultivars were incubated at $25^{\circ}C$, they represented the most difference of resistance and susceptibility to Fusarium wilt. From above results, we suggest that an efficient screening method for resistant cabbage to F. oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans is to dip the non-cut roots of 14-day-old seedlings in spore suspension of $1{\times}10^7$ conidia/ml for 0.5 hr and to transplant the seedlings to plastic pots with a fertilized soil, and then to cultivate the plants in a growth chamber at $25^{\circ}C$ for 3 weeks to develop Fusarium wilt.
In this study, a fiber-optic pH sensor based on a pH sol-gel film is fabricated. The sol-gel film is made by co-polymerizing tetramethoxysilane, trimethoxymethylsilane, ethanol and distilled water. As a pH indicator, a neutral red is immobilized in a thin porous film formed by the sol-gel process. The pH change in a sensing probe gives rise to a change in the color of the pH sol-gel film, and the absorbance of reflected light through the pH sol-gel film is also changed. By using a spectrometer, therefore, the spectra of reflected lights in the sensing probe with different pH values are measured. Also, the relationships between the pH values and the absorbance are analyzed on the basis of the color variations of the pH sol-gel films. In repeated experiments, the fiber-optic pH sensor shows that it has reversibility, a high reproducibility and a wide absorbance change in a pH range from pH 5 to 9. Also, we confirmed that the fabricated pH sol-gel film exhibits a fast response time, little or no pH indicator leaching and a dynamic range of 2.04 dB from pH 5 to 9. Based on the results of this study, a fiber-optic pH sensor can be developed for the pH monitoring in the harsh environments.

We evaluated the bioactive compounds including carbohydrates (CH), organic acids (OA), ascorbic acid (AA), anthocyanin (AC), and ellagic acid (EA) in the achenes, epidermis, and flesh of fully ripe strawberry fruits of the 'Maehyang', 'Seolhyang', 'Keumhyang', 'Akiheme', and 'Red pearl' cultivars. The total contents of CH, OA, AA, and AC were significantly greater in the epidermis than in other tissues, while the EA content was significantly greater in the achenes than in other tissues. The AA content of the epidermis ranged from $49.1-69.2mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$ FW and was significantly greater than the content of the flesh, while AA was not detected in the achenes of any of the tested strawberry cultivars. The AA contents of the epidermis and flesh of the 'Maehyang' were 69.2 and $42.2mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$ FW, respectively, and were greater than those of the other cultivars. The AC contents in the epidermis and achenes of the 'Keumhyang' were $74.0mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$ FW and $36.7mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$ DW, respectively, greater than those of the other cultivars. The EA content of the achenes of the 'Seolhyang' was $215.5mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$ DW, significantly greater than those of the other cultivars. Results indicate that the antioxidant levels and other chemical compounds of strawberry fruits vary significantly among different fruit tissues. Our results also suggest that the recently introduced Korean 'Maehyang', 'Seolhyang', and 'Keumhyang' contain higher levels of antioxidants than other major June-bearing strawberry cultivars. These cultivars are feasible selections for both growers and consumers.
The fermentation characteristics of ice wines made from freeze-dried Muscat Bailey A grapes were determined. Muscat Bailey A grapes were concentrated to 34.8 and $40.8^{\circ}Bx$ by freeze drying and were then fermented. The content of reducing sugar was 0.3% in conventional wine after fermentation, but was 21.5 and 23.9% in ice wines at 34 and $40^{\circ}Bx$, respectively. The content of alcohol was 9.6% in conventional wine but was 10.3 and 10.6% in ice wines at 34 and $40^{\circ}Bx$, respectively. It was observed that the red and violet colors of ice wines at 34 and $40^{\circ}Bx$ became dominant compared to the controls. In sensory evaluation studies, ice wines at 34 and $40^{\circ}Bx$ showed higher intensities in color, flavor, and overall preference.
