A Study on Driver Behavior and Dilemma Zone during Yellow Interval at Signalized Intersections (신호교차로 황색현시에서의 운전자 형태 및 딜레마 구간 연구방안)

  • Objective of this research is to analyze drivers' behaviors at signalized intersection during yellow interval. For this, deceleration rate of stopping, PRT(Perception-Response Time), and the relationship between dilemma zone and deceleration rate of stopping were surveyed at two signalized intersections located at urban area(Songtan and Suwon) and local area(Yongin) As a result, the deceleration rate of stopping at signalized intersections and a range of dilemma zone were estimated. It was found that the deceleration rate of stopping and PRT were 1.6m/sec$^2$ and 1.27sec, respectively. These values are bigger than ITE's values which have been used in our country. Accordingly, it is considered that these values should be used as a new design criteria for the traffic signal control.

Development of an Actuated Traffic Signal Control Strategy to Minimize Dilemma Zone (딜레마 구간 최소화를 위한 감응식 신호제어전략의 개발)

  • Most of the traffic accidents are a rear-end collision and a clash generated in the signalized intersection on the local roads. So, it is demanded that the high-quality of signal control and dilemma zone control. According to the cases generated by foreign countries, we established the strategies which are composed of Volume-Density Control, strategy of the dilemma zone control using R-detector (microwave detector) In Japan and EC-DC Control. MOEs(Measure of effectiveness) are car numbers in the dilemma zone , max-out probability in the safe side and the average stopping delay in the progress side. We choose a signalized intersection in rural highway to analyze the effect of the strategies and practiced an on-the-spot survey. The result of the survey is applied to the basic data in the simulator. Consequently, strategy of the dilemma zone control using R-detector(microwave detector) in Japan is the best effective in the safe side and EC-DC control is the best in the progress side. Based on the result, we developed the effective strategy of the signal control . This strategy is composed of the strategy of Japan and the detector on the stopping line used in the EC-DC control. On the result of the analysis, new strategy is the best effective in two sides.

A Study on Dilemma Zone Safety Improvement using Drone Videos (드론을 이용한 교차로 딜레마구간 안전개선에 관한 연구)

  • This study was a drone-utilized case study motivated by that drones can obtain sophisticated video image data previously not feasible. The dilemma zones on selected intersection approaches were identified and locations of drivers' decision making to stop or go at the onset of yellow were determined by analyzing drone video images. The gap between the drivers' decision making location and invisible stop/go border line provided by the yellow time interval was defined as "risky passing zone". To improve the dilemma zone safety problems, re-optimization of yellow time intervals and introduction of new pavement marking that can help drivers decision making on yellow indication are suggested.

  • This paper suggests a sensor's placement method for detecting the dilemma zone problem when real-time driver's safety service is provided at signalized intersections by multiple pointed traffic sensors using USN environments. For detecting the dangerous situations from vehicles accelerating through yellow intervals, red-light running and stopping abruptly like as dilemma zone problem, VISSIM(microscopic, behavior-based multi-purpose traffic simulation program) is used to perform a real-time multiple detection situation by changing the input data like as various inflow-volume, design speed change, driver perception and response time. As a result, the optimal interval of traffic sensors is 20~27m, and the initialized sensor location from stop-line is different according to road design speed. Moreover, the pattern of detection about dilemma zone is also different according to inflow-volumes. This paper shows that the method is useful to evaluate the sensor's placement problem based on micro-simulation and the results can be used as the basic research for USN services.

  • This study focuses on development of a risk level evaluation model for the intersection dilemma zone based on vehicle speed distribution approaching the intersection. The study results show that dilemma zone exists for all approaches selected for the study because the values of amber time have not been properly set, and that re-optimized values significantly reduce the dilemma zone risk level. It is also found that when normal distribution is assumed for vehicle approach speed the risk values similar to those for actual speed distributions can be obtained. When the risk level is found to be high, the amber time must be adjusted to reduce the length of the dilemma zone, or speed calming measures must be introduced so that vehicle speed be maintained under the speed value used when determining the amber time.

  • This paper demonstrates the in-vehicle dilemma zone warning system (DZWS) project developed as a part of the Driver Advisory and Collision Warning System in Automated Vehicle and Highway System (AVHS). The DZWS project, one of the Korea national ITS projects in 2000 develops the in-vehicle warning device to support drivers' decision making on whether to stop or to proceed to clear the intersection prior to the onset of yellow signal for avoiding the high risk of collision at signalized intersections through the dedicated short range communication (DSRC). This paper explores the design of optimal communication systems between roadway and vehicles, the operational and functional concepts of dilemma zone warning system based on appropriate approach speeds, and the system integration for field test at two sites of signalized intersections. Findings from the system integration indicated that the system would be implemented in eliminating the dilemma zone relative to approach speeds and in reducing red light violations and intersection collisions through the in-vehicle warning device at signalized intersection.
