  • This research works has newly proposed ideation method for development of innovative product design by using four design thinking framework in the aesthetic issue, material issue, function & structure issue which are usually called three major design issues. The four design thinking framework is consisted of eliminate, reduce, raise and create. This research also analyzed 232 innovation products in order to verify the proposed ideation method. The main outputs of this research are as follows; first, the ideation method which was newly developed in this research can help to create new ideas for innovation product design. Second, 41% existed innovation product designs were developed based on the ideation in the 'function & structure' issue. Three, 74% existed innovation product designs were developed based on the 'raise & create' issue rather than 'eliminate & reduce' issue. The results of this research can help a designer who wants create new innovation product.

  • This paper focused on fading out the factors of design innovation. Based on the previous studies, several factors were extracted to be tested by Delphi method among 15 experts in the design area. Delphi test showed a convergent result after the second round of questioning. Design mind of managers was conceived as the most important factor among those tested. On the base of importance, capability of design company was the second and industrial design demand was the third. Even though design manpower, design infrastructure and innovation network were ranked below the 4th factors, the absolute differences between high ranked factors and low ranked ones were not much wide. So. relatively low ranked factors were not negligible at all to get a desirable success in design innovation. This study provides some insights for the success of design innovation. First of all, design innovation could be achieved only when factors tested on this study upgraded simultaneously together. Desirable effect could not expected by a simple support such as logo design or kind of simple measure.

It proposes a research model through rational behavior theory (TRA) and technology acceptance model (TAM) for empirical research. The questionnaire was composed of questions to understand the influence of design innovation, favorability, and purchase intention. As a result of the study, functionality, ergonomics, and aesthetics influenced product preference and purchase intention. In order for the innovative product of Bluetooth speaker design to be accepted in the early market, it is most important to form a positive attitude toward favorability centering on function and aesthetics. Favorability is a factor that has the most decisive influence on the purchase intention of design innovation products, and companies must discover and reinforce various factors that positively affect the preference.

  • Even though Korea has lost its important modern era due to Japanese colonialism, it is in the rank of advanced nation today. It is common to think that there was no creative and innovative design activity because it was highly constrained by design activities. Is there no creative idea or innovative design in this period of design activity? As a result of analyzing the various products of modern design left in the question, I was able to find a new and unique Innovation in 10 fields. In other words, today, we can confirm that we have utilized innovative strategies in the field of design such as brand family, new sign system, modernism style, localization, star marketing, one source multi use, private brand, nature friendly, fusion and parody strategy.

  • To date, the literature has focused on formal R&D activities, such as internal, joint or external R&D, but informal R&D activities, such as job training or design, can also have a positive impact on technological innovation. To address this research gap, this paper examined 1) the influence of informal R&D activities on innovation adoption, and 2) the differences between formal R&D-oriented and informal R&D-oriented firms in process and product innovation. For this, statistical analysis was conducted using the data set from 2012 Korea Innovation Survey. The results suggest that 1) informal R&D activities can influence process innovation, and 2) firms engaging in both informal and formal R&D actively adopt product innovation. Findings suggest that 1) firms should recognize the importance of informal R&D and 2) national R&D policy should reflect the positive role of informal R&D in technological innovation.

  • This study aims to present the direction of fostering creative and innovative future design personnel required by companies according to the trend of the times. Changes in design manpower policy and industry, academia, and government cases are examined through policy case studies. Through analysis of industry-academia project cases, we discovered that a new educational model is needed to experience the process of developing products that can be commercialized. This study is expected to be used as basic data for policy development related to program development to foster creative and innovative talents required in the design industry.

  • A 'wicked problem' is something that is hard to notice and not easy to perceive. This study focuses on understanding the precise concept of wicked problem through studying the background that led to the introduction of the term wicked problem. On the other hand, for social innovation, which has recently become a hot topic, it is necessary to identify wicked problem. Social innovation means solving in an innovative way that is more effective, efficient and sustainable than existing ones. As the beneficiary is not an individual but a society, it is in line with the field covered by wicked problem. Therefore, the study introduces a case in which wicked problems are solved through novel ways, that is, design thinking. Through the case study, it was confirmed that design thinking helps identifying problems that are not revealed and contributes to social innovation. As a result, we hope that this research will contribute to help solve the problems that we need to resolve in our society by using design thinking.

  • First question: what makes inclusive design truly inclusive? Most inclusive design products are far from being appealing to their intended customers. This is mainly because designers are typically concerned with enhancing the usability, and not the emotional value that creates the connection between the product and the users. Typical solutions are larger displays and larger buttons, and these solutions often make the product less tasteful, graceful, and favorable. As a result, such products become less inclusive, veering from the original intention of the designers. Emotional design is not about making fun products, but about enjoyable products. Positive emotional design increases the affection value in products that enable users to create emotional connection with products. With the emotional connection, the user can engage in learning about the product as well as enjoy using the product. This can also resolve most usability issues by increasing the attention level and decreasing boredom. When more people feel that a product is enjoyable, it becomes more inclusive. Second question: Can't inclusive design have innovative value? Most inclusive design products are far from being innovative, and thus, they cannot create market opportunities. While emotional design approach increases value for users, innovative design approach creates value for the businesses. This will eventually promote development of inclusive products. This paper discusses the benefits of emotional design approach in inclusive design. It also argues how emotional design can help make inclusive design more innovative. Accompanied exemplar design process illustrates how emotional design contributes to inclusive design and how it leads to innovative products.
