Assessment of Equivalent Heights of Soil for the Lateral Earth Pressure Against Retaining Walls Due to Design Truck Load (표준트럭하중에 의해 옹벽에 작용하는 수평토압의 등가높이 산정)

  • Limit state design has been implemented in Korea since 2015; however, there exists no specification of lateral load determination on retaining wall due to the Korean standard traffic load on retaining wall's backfill surface. The lateral load from traffic depends on lane number, standard truck's axle loads and locations, loading distance from the inner wall. The concept of equivalent height of soil accounting for traffic loadings is typically used for design of retaining walls to quantify the traffic loads transmitted to the inner wall faces. Due to the different characteristics of the standard design trucks between Korea and US (AASHTO), the direct use of the guidelines from AASHTO LRFD leads to incorrect estimation of traffic load effects on retaining walls. This paper presents the results of evaluation of equivalent height of soil to reflect the Korean standard truck, based on the findings from analytical solutions using Bounessq's theory and numerical assessment using 2D finite element method. Consequently, it was found that the equivalent heights of soil from the Korean standard truck load were lower for lower retaining wall height.

  • The lateral load from traffic depends on standard truck's axle loads and locations, loading distance from the inner wall. The method of limit state design has been adopted and used for design of roads in the Republic of Korea since 2015. The concept of equivalent height of soil accounting for traffic loading is often used for design of retaining walls to quantify the traffic loads transmitted to the inner wall faces. Due to the different characteristics of the standard design trucks between Korea and US (AASHTO), the direct use of the guidelines from AASHTO LRFD leads to incorrect estimation of traffic load effects on retaining walls. This paper presents the results of evaluation of equivalent height of soil to reflect the standard truck of the nation, based on the findings from analytical solutions using 3D finite element method. Compare to US, the standard truck loading has a structure where the axle load is concentrated so that the equivalent load height is estimated to be slightly larger than AASHTO for lower retaining wall height. It would be reasonable to present the equivalent load height in Korea more conservatively than AASHTO in terms of securing long term stability of the retaining wall structure.

  • An optimization method is proposed for preform and billet shape designs in the forging process by using the Equivalent Static Loads (ESLs). The preform shape is an important factor in the forging process because the quality of the final forging is significantly influenced by it. The ESLSO is used to determine the shape of the preform. In the ESLSO, nonlinear dynamic loads are transformed to the ESLs and linear response optimization is performed using the ESLs. The design is updated in linear response optimization and nonlinear analysis is performed with the updated design. The examples in this paper show that optimization using the ESLs is useful and the design results are satisfactory. Consequently, the optimal preform and billet shapes which produce the desired final shape have been obtained. Nonlinear analysis and linear response optimization of the forging process are performed using the commercial software LS-DYNA and NASTRAN, respectively.

  • Prestressing tendons in the wall of circular storage tank are investigated from the viewpoint of equivalent load method. Special attention is paid to the effectiveness of eccentricities of the hoop and vertical tendons. Local effect at the bent Point of vertical tendon in the wall with varying thickness is examined. Some aspects which are frequently overlooked or misinterpreted in the conventional analyses of vertical tendons are discussed. Numerical examples are presented to emphasize the significance of accurate analysis of the vortical tendon in practice. It is expected that the equivalent load method can be effectively used to simplify the analysis of tendons in the circular wall and to minimize the errors.

  • Spot-welding is widely used to construct passenger car bodies in automotive industry. Occasionally severe spot-weld distortions in sub-assembly make further spot-weld difficult. In this paper, distortions for various spot-weld conditions are measured using coordinate measuring machine. Then, based on finite element solution for unit translation or unit rotation of nugget edge, equivalent loads for spot-weld distortions are determined. They can be used to predict the spot-weld distortion using finite element method.

  • P-${\Delta}$ analysis by use of the equivalent colurnn stiffness determined by Momcnt curvature-Thrust curves provides relatively precise analytical results for unbraced reinforced concrete columns, however it needs a complicated arialytical procedure. Equ~valent col~rnn stiffness equations are proposed for a simple analytical procedure which are ckterrnined by the Moment-Curvature Thrust curves of the practically useable sections. Thc proposed stiffness equations are appiled to P-${\Delta}$ analysis and rnornent magnifier method to compare with the selected test result. Use of the proposed stiffness equations may slrnplify the P-${\Delta}$ i.rialvtica1 procedure and improve the accuracy of moment magnifier niethod.

  • A shape optimization is proposed to obtain the desired final shape of forming and forging products in the manufacturing process. The final shape of a forming product depends on the shape parameters of the initial blank shape. The final shape of a forging product depends on the shape parameters of the billet shape. Shape optimization can be used to determine the shape of the blank and billet to obtain the appropriate final forming and forging products. The equivalent static loads method for non linear static response structural optimization (ESLSO) is used to perform metal forming and forging optimization since nonlinear dynamic analysis is required. Stress equivalent static loads (stress ESLs) are newly defined using a virtual model by redefining the value of the material properties. The examples in this paper show that optimization using the stress ESLs is quite useful and the final shapes of a forming and forging products are identical to the desired shapes.

FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF MANDIBULAR STRESSES AND DENTURE MOVEMENTS INDUCED BY VARIOUS DENTURE BASE MATERIALS (의치상 재료에 따른 하악응력 및 의치의 변위에 관한 유한요소법적 분석)

  • 의치상 재료 종류에 따라 의치, 점막 및 하악골에 발생되는 변위 및 응력을 연구하기 위하여 컴퓨터를 이용한 수치적 해석인 2차원 유한 요소법을 이용하였다. 2차원 유한 요소 모형으로선 표준 크기의 하악골 및 의치를 고려하여 231개의 사변형 요소 및 268개의 절점으로 분할한 후 각 구성 성분의 물리적 성질인 탄성률 및 프와송비를 대입시켰다. 사용된 의치로서는 일반 합성수지의치, 2mm후경의 탄성재를 의치상 하부에 이장한 합성수지의치, 2mm후경의 탄성재를 치아와 의치상 중앙에 삽입한 합성수지의치 및 0.5mm후경의 금속상의치의 4종류였으며, 하중시에 하악의 고정 부위로선 생체와 동일 조건을 부여하기 위하여 교근, 내측익돌근, 측두근등의 하악 폐구근이 부착되는 하악각 부위 및 하악 근돌기 부위의 16절점을 고정점으로 하였다. 하중 조건으로선 하악 제1대구치의 일점에 10kg의 수직 집중하중, 하악 중절치의 일점에 7kg의 수직 집중하중 및 하악 제 1소구치로 부터 하악 제2대구치까지의 교합면에 10kg의 수직 분산하중을 부여하여 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 하중이 의치 교합면위의 가해진 부위에 따라 다양한 의치 회전 및 강하 현상을 보였으며, 탄성재를 이장 및 삽입한 합성 수지 의치의 변위가 일반 합성수지의치 및 금속상 의치의 변위보다 더 컸다. 2. 주응력을 고려할때 점막 부위에는 주로 압축 응력이 작용하였으며 치조제 부위는 압축응력과 인장 응력이 함께 작용하였다. 3. 탄성재를 삽입한 합성수지의치에 최고 등가 응력이 집중되었으며 그 다음은 탄성재를 이장한 합성수지의치, 일반 합성수지의치의 순이였으며 금속상의 경우는 금속을 따라서 높은 등가 응력이 넓게 분산되었다. 4. 의치상 종류에 관계없이 동일 하중 조건하에선 점막에 나타나는 등가 응력의 크기 및 분산양태는 유사하였다. 5. 하악골에서 등가 응력은 의치지지 부위에만 국한되지 않고 넓게 분산 되었으며 의치상 종류 및 하중 조건에 관계없이 치조제 후방 및 하악연의 후방 부위에 특히 높은 등가응력이 집중되었다. 6. 하악 중절치의 일점에 수직 하중을 가한 경우가 다른 하중 조건에 비하여 지지점과의 거리차이로 인하여 하악골에 가장 높은 등가 응력을 유발하였다. 7. 의치상 재료에 따른 하악 골에 발생되는 응력의 크기 및 분산에는 큰 차이가 없으나 금속상의 경우가 교합압을 분산하는데는 효과적이었다.

  • A new equivalent curved beam theory is developed for the analysis of the corner part of ship structures, in which effects of distributed loads and asymmetricity with two or three connected parts are considered. Equivalent loads are obtained from equilibrium conditions between the distributed loads and the member forces and moments at the ends of curved beam. And an equivalent curved beam for the asymmetric structure is obtained by superposing the equivalent symmetric parts which have equivalent stiffness. From the sample calculation, it is found that the results of the new equivalent curved beam theory are well agreed with those of finite element method using membrane elements with little computing time and sufficient accuracy.

  • The objective of the present paper is to develop an analysis method for the correction of welding deformation of stiffened plate by line heating. In this paper, the equivalent loading method, based on the inherent strain theory, was used to analyze the heat-straightening of a stiffened plate. Equivalent loads were obtained by integrating the inherent strains which were determined from the highest temperature and the degree of restraint. Finally, the obtained equivalent loads were imposed, as applied loads, on the elastic analysis for the prediction of correction of welding deformation in stiffened plate. The proposed method is expected as a basic study in heat-straightening analysis of welding deformation in large scale block.
