The objective of this study is to see the characteristics of Korean dramas preferred by Chinese viewers: the factors are years of production, diffusers(Broadcasters), types of drama, story topics, main actors, and directors. As a result, Chinese viewers tend to prefer to dramas recently diffused in Korea, miniseries, and comic dramas and romance. Otherwise, broadcasters, main actors, and directors do not influence directly on the choice of dramas of Chinese. Particularly, Korean wave stars in China do not always appear into the dramas favored by Chinese viewers.

  • 2002 was the first year that the export of Korean TV programs exceeded the import. Particularly, there is no doubt that dramas, as for a genre, dominated the market, from 64.3% in 2001 to 93.6% in 2003. Especially, the increasing demand from the Chinese block such as Taiwan, China and the neighbor countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the preference of Korean drama in Japan shows the continuation of booming Korean wave. Questions frequently asked in this current circumstance may be what kind of dramas are better to be exported and to which country Korean dramas are exported. Based upon those needs, this paper examines the determining factors of Korean drama exports to foreign countries. Especially, this study examines the internal factors to the drama influencing export by countries. For this study, 594 Korean dramas aired on MBC and exported between 2002 and 2005 will be analysed by chi-square analysis.

  • This study investigated the differences between active and inactive TV watching groups, in terms of residential characteristics, of class-oriented drama viewing rate. We compared Flow and Social Comparison Theories to explain the relationship between class-oriented contents in the drama and viewing rate. We collected 110,000 TV viewers data of 4 class-oriented and the other 4 dramas, aired between Feb. 2016 and March 2019, through D-Live local cable service provider. Controlling gender ratio and income level which may affect viewing rate, we found that class-oriented content significantly and positively affects viewing rate in active watching group while the same content significantly and negatively affects viewing rate in inactive watching group. These results imply that Flow and Social Comparison Theories may apply in opposite directions in different watching groups.

  • Based on the strategic contingency theory, this study empirically examines Korean TV drama producers' changing adaptive behaviors in terms of genre variety given different levels of environmental uncertainty. The extant literature has suggested that firms tend to increase product variety in order to cope with increasing environmental uncertainty. This study attempted to verify the hypothesis that TV drama producers would employ wider variety of genre in the period with more uncertain environment(2003-2009) than the period with stable environment(1994-2002). Empirical results support the hypothesis, implying that TV drama producers tend to repeatedly produce dramas with the same genre in order to pursue efficiency in stable environment whereas they tend to employ a variety of different genre in order to cope with increasing environmental uncertainty.

Analyzing data collected from 176 female viewers in the U.S., it founds knowledge about Korea and general drama exposure give direct effect on the future viewing intention. Korean drama exposure directly affects drama evaluation and viewing intention. Korean network, however, has no significant effect on the dependent variables. Result of the present study shows that cultural capital of foreign viewers has effects on Korean drama consumption. Another result that behavior of general drama consumption has contributed to Korean drama consumption gives meaningful implication for the policy of Korean television export.
