A Comparative Study of Notes in KDC and DDC (한국십진분류법과 듀이십진분류법에 나타난 주기의 다양성에 관한 비교 연구)

  • Notes in library classification systems are inevitable tools for creating and building of classification numbers. The purposes of this study are to make better notes in Korean Decimal Classification(KDC) by analyzing and comparing notes in other library classification system and to assign the most appropriate classification numbers based upon the better notes. In order to achieve these purposes, analyzing notes in Dewey Decimal Classification(DDC) and KDC was carried. And the comparison of notes used in 000 Computer science, information, general works in DDC and KDC was done. Based upon these analysis, additional notes and their various forms were suggested.

  • New technologies representing the Fourth Industrial Revolution are already being realized in library services. There is not, however, active research on measures to increase work efficiency by introducing a new technology in the work of "classification" that is part of the traditional librarian jobs they should continue in the future. The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) has not issued a print version since 2018. This study analyzes cases of WebDewey, Classification Web, and UDC Online. The functions required for the development of the Korean Decimal Classification (KDC) web version were derived, and the final functions suitable for the development of the KDC web version were proposed through AHP analysis.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the expansion of headings for digital trends of Korean Decimal Classification. In order to achieve the purpose, this study first analyzed the change process of classification items related to digital resources in DDC and KDC. Second, subject names related to digital in LCSH and Korean National Library Subject Heading were analyzed. Third, comparisons between the items related to digital of DDC 23rd with LCSH and KDC with Korean National Library Subject Heading were conducted. The result of comparative analysis was identified that KDC 6th edition faces with difficulties in reasonable classification because item names related to digital of KDC 6th edition have 11 items. Therefore, the item related to digital has to be expanded to new classification item name and has to add include notes and class here notes in KDC.

  • This study aims to analyze and compare the structures of auxiliary tables regarding places - for example, Korea using several decimal classification systems such as DDC, UDC, KDC and NDC. For each auxiliary table, the codes were described in detail and the special characteristics were discussed. The common characteristics and the different aspects of different decimal classification systems were investigated as well as divisions of Korea in Korean Wikipedia and an administrative district classification system. This study suggests a new basic summary for the expansion of codes of Korea in auxiliary table in DDC with its principles and options and it will be useful for revising process of many decimal classification systems.

  • This study compares and analyzes the classes in the major special areas in the sociology, called “branch sociology,” included in the Korean Decimal Classification 4th edition and Dewey Decimal Classification 21st edition. Especially it analyzes the related classes of specified areas (branch sociology) of sociology including those of arts and sports, sciences, languages, society, region, etc. class by class. In this analysis two systems show many differences in the classes included and in the locations of some classes. This analysis can be useful for the future revision of KDC.

  • 1950년대까지 DDC는 전체 분류표 가운데 10분의 1이 종교였고 종교가운데에서도 기독교가 10분의 9를 차지하였다. 더욱이 DDC 편집자들은 과학기술발전에 보조를 맞추지 못했고 이러한 태만으로 하여 이들 과학기술 분야을 국제십진분류법에 넘겨주게 되었다. (이 국제십진분류법에서는 과학기술분야가 전체의 4/5를 차지하는데 반하여 DDC는 겨우 2/10를 차지한다.) DDC가 미국 이외의 국가, 종교, 실습, 언어에 이용되는 것을 Dewey 자신이나 그의 초기계승자들이 추구한 것은 아니다.

  • The purpose of this study aims to provide possible suggestions for the improvement KDC 5th ed. as a system. After analyzing and evaluating time & space devices of KDC 5th ed.(including DDC 22th ed. and NDC 9th ed.). such as main schedules, common auxiliary tables, internal tables and notes, suggestions for the improvement were proposed. If above suggestions are adopted, effective literature classification scheme which is suited to domestic circumstances will be certainly prepared.

  • According to Wayne A. Wiegand in the 1998, he research to The "Amherst Method": The Origins of the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme. Although a debate about the origins of the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme has been going on for generations, historical consensus remains elusive. This paper contributes information to the historiography on the origins of the scheme: 1) by grounding an account of Dewey's thinking as he was crafting the DDC on an analysis of a large body of sources than previous classification historians have consulted; and 2) by expanding and deepening historical understanding of the contextual forces influencing on the classification structure. Because the DDC idea as it first occurred to M. Dewey in Amherst in 1872-73 is an important in the history of library development in the world. He outlined the first draft of his decimal scheme and submitted it to the Amherst College Library Committee on 8 May 1873. This paper analysis to "Three Genetic Paper", that is 1) The Merits of the System, 2) Library Classification System, 3) Its Special Adaption to our Library.

  • Based upon its variety and specialties, Korean food has the potential power to become globalized, and a national public relations strategy for global competitiveness. In this process, a proper organization of information about Korean foods should be given a priority. The purposes of this study are to analyze the classification status and case studies of Korean foods in Korean libraries, to understand how much Korean foods are represented in the classification scheme and what should be improved, and to suggest a modified expansion of DDC 22. In so doing, an attempt is made to provide some evidences of the revision of DDC 22 as well as useful practices of modified DDC 22 in Korean libraries.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze and identify the characteristics in the current library classification research, and to provide suggestions for the future in this area. This study covers the published studies in library classification from 2004 to 2013. They include the research on Korean Decimal Classification (KDC), Dewey Decimal Classification and others. The results show that the main purpose in those studies is to improve current KDC system. A suggestion is provided in this study to concentrate on specific classification systems for school libraries and small libraries, for digital collections.
