  • In recent years, epidemics have raged with a 6-7 years period such as SARS (2002), Swine Flu (2009), MERS (2015). When an epidemic arises, the first advice is the isolation of infected patients and disease areas. Because it appears after a certain incubation period, the peoples worked with Infected (infection cause) staff and the place are largely exposed to the epidemic Risk. If you have an epidemic in the workplace, even if you close it, the business plan should be ready to continue the safety and protection measures for employees and the organization's core business. In this study We present the corresponding measures to protect the safety of the employees and to continue the core business during a pandemic outbreak and the introduction of BCP mainly corresponding practices of financial companies.

  • In recent years, lots of damages appear frequently due to cyber terrorism and natural disasters such as typhoon 'Chaba', earthquake at Kyeongju. The damages lead to people's anxiety and public institutions connected directly with them also can't be free from the threat situation. In addition, public institutions must prepare business continuity issues with the highest priority in the event of disasters because they are closest with people's safety. However, preceding researches suggest needs of disaster mitigation activities management system or central office oriented top-down BCP establishing system. In this study, We grasp the current status of public institutions's business continuity plan(BCP) against disaster and we propose an efficient bottom-up method for structuring the BCP of public institutions.

Oral health status of institutionalized elderly in Korea (노인장기요양시설 입소노인의 구강건강실태와 시사점)

  • Purpose: The institutionalized elderly have placed the most vulnerable state, and the report about the oral health status of the institutionalized elderly was scarce. The aims of the current study were to investigate the oral health status of institutionalized elderly. Materials and methods: The survey of the oral health status was carried out on 487 institutionalized elderly from 4 longterm care facilities of Seoul metropolitan city, Gyunggi province, and Gangwon province in Korea. Results: The prevalence of dental caries, root caries, and dental calculus of the institutionalized elderly was 19.2%, 15.3%, and 23.7%, respectively. The percentage of edentulism among the institutionalized elderly was 26.2%. Those who had poor oral hygiene and tongue coating were 43.9% and 90.5%, respectively. The percentages wearing complete and removable partial denture on maxilla were 12.8% and 3.3%, respectively. The percentages wearing complete and removable partial denture on mandible were 7.8% and 5.6%, respectively. The percentages of institutionalized elderly needing complete and removable partial denture on maxilla were 29.7% and 27.2%, respectively. The percentages of institutionalized elderly needing complete and removable partial denture on mandible were 24.5% and 30.9%, respectively. Conclusion: The oral health stuatus of institutionalized elderly was poor. For the oral health promotion of elderly in longterm care facilities, it is essential to educate nurses and caregivers about the importance of the oral health and oral hygiene method.

  • The Agrobacterium-mediated transformation has been successfully used method to introduce foreign genes into some monocotyledonous as well as a large number of dicotyledonous plants genome, We developed transgenic Chinese cabbage plants with insect-resistance gene, modified CryIAc, by Agrobacterium-transformation and confirmed transgene copy number by Southern blot analysis. We confirmed that twenty-nine out of 46 transgenic Chinese cabbage plants have single copy of CryIAc. To obtain the sequences information on the transferred DNA (T-DNA) integration into plant genome, we analyzed left border (LB) flanking sequences by genome walking (GW) PCR method. Out of 46 transgenic Chinese cabbage plants examined, 37 carried the vector backbone sequences. This result indicates that the transfer of the vector backbone from the binary vectors resulted mainly from inefficient termination of LB site. Analysis of T-DNA LB flanking region of 9 transgenic Chinese cabbage plants without vector backbone revealed that all LB ends were not conserved and nucleotides up to 36bp from the LB cleavage site were deleted.

Qualitative PCR Detection of GM rices (Milyang 204 and Iksan 483) developed in Korea (국내에서 개발된 GM 쌀 (밀양 204호, 익산 483호)에 대한 정성 PCR 분석법 개발)

  • For the development of qualitative PCR detection method of genetically modified rice (Oryza sativa L.), rice species specific gene, SAMDC1 (S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase), was selected and validated as suitable for use as an endogenous reference gene in rice. The primer pair OsSAMDC1-5'/3' with 110 bp amplicon was used for amplification of the rice endogenous gene, SAMDC1 and no amplified product was observed from 19 different plants as templates. Qualitative PCR method was assayed with 2 different GM rices (Milyang 204 and Iksan 483) developed in Korea. For the qualitative PCRs, the construct-specific detection primer pairs were constructed. Os204-5'/OsNOS-3' amplifying the junction region of GUS gene and NOS terminator introduced in Milyang 204 gave rise to an amplicon 172 bp; also, Os483-5'/OsNOS-3' amplifying the junction region of Bar gene and NOS terminator introduced in Iksan 483 gave rise to an amplicon 161 bp.

A Study on the Total Mercury Content in Fresh-Water Fishes (담수어중(淡氷魚中)의 총수은함량(總水鎭含量)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • The present study was carried to observe the total mercury contents in fresh-water fishes which were collected from 24 streams in the South-East area, Korea. These total mercury contents were determined by quartz tube combustion gold amalgamation method. The value of total mercury contents in collected fresh-water fishes ranged from 0.02ppm to 0.12ppm and the mean value were 0.07ppm. The total value of mercury contents differed with the fish species showing 0.09ppm in Carassius auratus, 0.10ppm in Coilia ectenes, 0.11ppm in Moroca lagowskii and Squalidus majime and 0.12ppm in Cobitis taenia which were highly more than the mean value of collected fishes. The mean value of the total mercury contents in the Yeong Il Gun (0.09PPm), Gim Hae Gun (0.08ppm) and Meong Ju Gun (0.08ppm) were highly detected than those of other surveyed areas.

Flower Color Modification by Manipulating Flavonoid Biosynthetic Pathway (플라보노이드 대사 조절을 통한 화색 변경)

  • Flower color is one of the main target traits in the flower breeding. Recently, technological advances in genetic engineering have been successfully reported the flower colors, such as blue roses and blue carnations that are impossible to develop by traditional breeding. Accumulated knowledge-based approaches for flavonoid biosynthesis enabled to introduce novel and unique colors into flowers. These flower color modifications have been made through the regulation of flavonoid metabolic pathway - control of endogenous gene expression and introduction of foreign genes to produce novel and specific flavonoids - and the introduction of transcription factors that are known to regulate sets of genes being involving in the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway. More empirical regulation of the flavonoids metabolism requires the understanding for regulatory mechanism of intrinsic flavonoids depending on the flower crops and the very sophisticated control of flavonoid metabolic flow. In this review, we summarized successful examples of flower color modification. It might be useful to deduce the strategy for the creation of exquisite colors in flower plants.

A Protocol of Cobalt(II)-Based Chemical Treatment for Suppressing Post-harvest Gravitropic Response of Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus L .) Flower Stalks (코발트 염을 이용한 금어초 절화의 수확 후 굴지성 반응 억제)

  • It was previously reported that cobalt(II) effectively suppresses the postharvest gravitropic response of snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus L.) (Kim et al. (1997) Agric. Chem. and Biotechnol. 40, 567-571). In this study, several factors affecting the suppression of the gravitropic response by cobalt ion were examined. When flower stalks of snapdragon were pretreated with several different cobalt salts, cobalt nitrate turned out to be the most effective not only in reducing the response but also in preserving the flower quality. We also tested the effects of various detergents which were added to cobalt(II) solution, finding that Tween-40 was the best among the tested with respect to the effectiveness as well as the flower quality. Based on these results, we optimized a protocol for the chemical treatment; that is, a suppressor solution containing 10 mM $CO(NO_3)_2$ and 0.05% Tween-40 was directly sprayed on the gravitropically sensitive region of cut flowers of snapdragon. The suppressor treatment gave rise to a significantly improved results when the flower stalks were stored at a lower temperature after the chemical treatment.

Radiographic Findings and Atelectasis in Children Admitted to Hospital with Acute Asthma (입원한 천식 환아들의 흉부 방사선 소견과 무기폐)

  • Purpose : We aimed to evaluate the abnormalities of chest radiographs including atelectasis in children who were admitted with bronchial asthma. Methods : We retrospectively analyzed the 357 chest radiographs and the clinical and laboratory features of the 144 children with asthma, who were admitted at Daejoen St. Mary's Hospital from April 1994 to May 1998. Results : Clinical and laboratory characteristics were as follows : male to female ratio, 2.1 : 1; mean age, 4.8 years of age; mean numbers of admission, 2.5; mean hospitalization, 5.0 days; mean IgE, 387 IU/mL; mean eosinophil count, $362/mm^3$. In the abnormal findings of the 357 radiographs, there were 314 cases(88.0%) of hyperinflation, pulmonary infiltration 35.0%, atelectasis 5.3% and pneumomediastinum 0.3%. All(19) cases of atelectasis were observed in the right lung field with mostly segmental and lobular distribution, except one with lobar involvement. Atelectasis was predominant in males and those under 2 years of age. There was a tendency that the right upper lung was more involved under two years while the right lower lung was more involved over seven years of age. Conclusion : Radiographs of children admitted to hospital with bronchial asthma showed abnormal findings including pneumonia or atelectasis(5.3%). These abnormal findings can help to determine other therapeutic modalities in addition to asthma treatment.

Heavy Metals in Soils of the Urban Area (도시 토사중 중금속 함량)

  • In order to evaluate the degree of air pollution, soils from 125 and 60points of main streets of Seoul and Daejeon, respectively, were sampled and analyzed for the contents of lead, copper, iron and zinc by nitric acid($HNO_3$) extraction followed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry during June and September, 1990. The Pb contents of Seoul and Daejeon were 350.2$\mu$g/g and 175.9$\mu$g/g, respectively, which were 14.5times and 7.3times respectively higher than the control(24.0). In Seoul, the commercial area gave the highest value followed by resdential and industrial areas in the decreasing order, while the order in Daejeon was Industrial, commercial and residential areas. The Cu contents in Seoul and Daejeon were very similar(236.6 and 234.6, respectively) each other, and about 11times higher than the control(20.9). The concentration was highest in industrial, followed by commercial and the lowest in residential areas in Seoul, while the order in Daejeon was industrial, residential and commercial areas. The Fe contents were 25716.5 in Seoul and 22838.6 in Daejeon, both being similar to the control value(22537.0). The value was highest in industrial and next in commercial areas and the lowest in residential area both in Seoul and Daejeon. The Zn contents in Seoul and Daejeon were 728.2 and 404.0, respectively, wihch were 6.3 and 3.6times higher than the control(113.3). The value was highest in commercial and next in industrial areas and the lowest in residental area in Seoul, while the order was industrial, residential and commercial areas in Daejeon. The heavy metal content was higher in the soil of main streets than that of minor streets in Seoul. The content of lead in Seoul was higher in the streets of Chongro-ku(525.9) and Chung-ku(684.8), the central area of the city which had a heavy traffic, than those in Nowon-ku(320.3) and Kwanak-ku(312.6) which had relatively less traffic crowd. The similar pattern was observed in the content of zinc; it was higher in Chongro-ku(1305.0) and Chung-ku(1335.4) than in Nowon-ku(489.1) and Kwanak-ku(569.8). In Daejeon, the contents of lead and zinc were decreasing as the distance from Daejeon Railroad Station increased : they were respectively 157.8 and 447.7 within 2km from the station, 157.6 and 235.7 with in 2-4km, and 63.5 and 156.2 within 4-6km and 58.7 and 142.2 within 6-8km. In summary, the contents of lead, copper and zinc were generally higher in the central area of the city, areas of heavy traffic and areas of industry and commerce.
