  • Cadmium (Cd) adsorption by the activated carbon containing hydroxyapatite (HAP) was investigated. Cd adsorption with different HAP mass ranged from 10% to 30%. With more HAP, more Cd was adsorbed. These results suggest that the higher HAP dose causes an increase of the ion exchange potential in HAP sorbent. Kinetics and equilibrium studies were investigated in series of batch adsorption experiments. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were fit to the equilibrium data and Cd adsorption on HAP sorbent were found to follow the Freundlich isotherm model well in the initial adsorbate concentration range. The simple kinetic model, the pseudo first order kinetic model and the pseudo second order kinetic model, were used to investigate the adsorption. The adsorption reaction of Cd followed the pseudo second order kinetic model, and the adsorption pseudo second order kinetic constants ($k_2$) increased with increasing initial HAP amounts onto activated carbon. Also, intraparticle diffusion model was used to investigate the adsorption mechanism between adsorbate and adsorbent in the aqueous phase. Surface adsorption reaction and intraparticle diffusion occur simultaneously Cd adsorption mechanism from aqueous phase in this study.

  • In this study, the adsorption behavior from aqueous solution as well as kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of Acid Black 1 were investigated through batch reaction using coconut shell based granular steam activated carbon. The effects of various adsorption parameters such as pH, initial concentration, contact time, temperature were studied. To confirm the effect of pH, pHpzc measurements were analyzed followed by measuring removal efficiencies of Acid Black 1 at the pH range from 3 to 11. Experimental equilibrium adsorption data were fitted using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption isotherm. The conformity of adsorption reaction for pseudo first and second order model were evaluated through kinetic analysis. Values of enthalpy change and activation energy were also investigated through thermodynamic analysis and it was confirmed that the adsorption process was endothermic. The spontaneity of adsorption process was evaluated using the values of entropy and Gibbs free energy changes.

  • Fluoride removal by acid and heat treated red mud were studied in batch and column system regarding contact time, initial concentration, pH, adsorbent dose, and filter depth. The results showed that acid treated with 0.8 M HCl, had highest adsorption capacity of fluoride and adsorption capacity decreased as heat treatment temperature increased. Sorption equilibrium reached in 30 min at a initial concentration of 50 mg-F/L but 1 h was required to reach the sorption equilibrium at the initial concentration of 500 mg-F/L by 0.8 M acid treated red mud (0.8 M-ATRM). Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted well to Langmuir isotherm model with maximum fluoride adsorption capacity of 23.162 mg/g. The fluoride adsorption decreased as pH increased due to the fluoride competition for favorable adsorption site with $OH^-$ at higher pH. Removal percentage was increased but the amount of adsorption per unit mass decreased by adding the amount of 0.8 M-ATRM. It was concluded that the 0.8 M-ATRM could be used as a potential adsorbent for the fluoride removal from aqueous solutions because of its high fluoride adsorption capacity and low cost.

  • The equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of adsorption of murexide by granular activated carbon were investigated. The experiment was carried out by batch experiment with the variables of the amount of the adsorbent, the initial concentration of the dye, the contact time and the temperature. The isothermal adsorption equilibrium was best applied to the Freundlich equation in the range of 293 ~ 313 K. From the separation factor (${\beta}$) of Freundlich equation, it was found that adsorption of murexide by granular activated carbon could be the appropriate treatment method. The adsorption energy (E) obtained from the Dubinin- Radushkevich equation shows that the adsorption process is a physical adsorption process. From the kinetic analysis of the adsorption process, pseudo second order model is more consistent than pseudo first order model. It was found that the adsorption process proceeded to a spontaneous process and an endothermic process through Gibbs free energy change ($-0.1096{\sim}-10.5348kJ\;mol^{-1}$) and enthalpy change ($+151.29kJ\;mol^{-1}$). In addition, since the Gibbs free energy change decreased with increasing temperature, adsorption reaction of murexide by granular activated carbon increased spontaneously with increasing temperature. The entropy change ($147.62J\;mol^{-1}\;K^{-1}$) represented the increasing of randomness at the solid-solution interface during the adsorption reaction of murexide by activated carbon.

  • This study examined the adsorption characteristics of $Cr^{6+}$ and $As^{3+}$ in the aqueous solution by Hizikia susiformis biochar which was collected from Jeju Island. The optimal pH for $Cr^{6+}$ and $As^{3+}$ adsorption were 2 and pH 6, respectively. Kinetic data showed that the adsorption occurred during the first 100 min, and the most of heavy metals were bound to biochars within 300 min. Moreover, the kinetic data presented that the course of adsorption follows the Pseudo first and second order models. The equilibrium data were well fitted by the Langmuir model and the $Cr^{6+}$ adsorption capacity (25.91 mg/g) was higher than that of $As^{3+}$ (16.54 mg/g). From these results, the seaweed biochar was shown to be a efficient adsorbent for $Cr^{6+}$ and $As^{3+}$ metals in a contaminated environment.

  • In this study, sorption characteristics of thermally treated activated alumina (AA) for fluoride were investigated. Sorption experiments have been conducted in equilibrium and kinetic batch conditions. Also, effects of solution pH and anions on fluoride removal have been observed. The properties of thermally treated ( $700^{\circ}C$) activated alumina (AA700) and untreated activated alumina (UAA) were compared using field-emission scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive spectrometry, X-ray diffractometer (XRD) analysis, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. From the experiments using AA thermally treated at different temperatures (100, 300, 500, $700^{\circ}C$), it was found that at high fluoride concentrations (50, 100, 200 mg/L) the sorption capacity of thermally treated AA increased with increasing thermal treatment temperature. At an initial fluoride concentration of 200 mg/L, the sorption capacity of AA700 was 3.67 times greater than that of UAA. The BET analysis showed that the specific surface area of UAA was about 2 times larger than that of AA700. The XRD analysis indicated that UAA was composed of both boehmite (AlOOH) and bayerite ($Al(OH)_3$) while AA700 was $Al_2O_3$. The reason that fluoride sorption capacity of AA700 increased despite of decrease in specific surface area compared to UAA could be attributed to the change of crystal structure. The kinetic sorption test showed that fluoride sorption to AA700 arrived at equilibrium after 24 h. The equilibrium test demonstrated that the maximum sorption capacity of AA700 was 5.70 mg/g. Additional batch experiments indicated that fluoride sorption to AA700 was the highest at pH 7, decreasing at both acidic and basic solution pHs. Also, fluoride sorption to AA700 decreased in the presence of anions such as phosphate, nitrate, and carbonate. This study demonstrated that thermal treatment of AA at high temperature could increase its sorption capacity for fluoride.

  • We investigated the efficiency of natural zeolite with different cation exchange capacity (CEC) as capping material for the remediation of marine sediments contaminated with heavy metals. Three different zeolite with high CEC (HCzeo, 163.74 cmolc/kg), medium CEC (MCzeo, 127.20 cmolc/kg), and low CEC (LCzeo, 70.62 cmolc/kg) were used. The surface area of the zeolite was in decreasing order: HCzeo ($59.43m^2/g$) > MCzeo ($52.10m^2/g$) > LCzeo ($10.12m^2/g$). The results of mineralogical composition obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD) show that LCzeo was mainly composed of quartz and albite. In the XRD result of MCzeo and HCzeo, the peaks of clinoptilolite, heulandite, and mordenite were also observed along with that of quartz and albite. Sorption equilibrium onto the HCzeo, MCzeo, and LCzeo was reached in 6 h at initial concentration of 10 mg/L and 100 mg/L. Higher adsorption of Cd and Zn onto the zeolite with higher CEC were achieved but adsorption of Cu and Ni were not dependent on the CEC of zeolite. It can be concluded that the zeolite with high cation exchange ability is recommended for the contaminated sediments with Cd and Zn but the inexpensive zeolite with low CEC for Cu and Ni.

  • This study examined the adsorption characteristics of heavy metal ions ($Cr^{6+}$, $As^{3+}$) in an aqueous solution using recycled aggregate (RA) and recycled aggregate (RA)/steel slag (SS) composites. The RA and SS are favorable for the absorbent because it contains about 91% and 86.9%, respectively, which are some of the major adsorbent ingredients (CaO, $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$) for heavy metal. Kinetic equilibrium of $Cr^{6+}$ and $As^{3+}$ in RA and RA/SS composites reached within 180 min and 360 min, respectively. The kinetic data presented that the slow course of adsorption follows the Pseudo first and second order models. The equilibrium data were well fitted by the Freundlich model and showed the affinity order of $As^{3+}$ > $Cr^{6+}$. The results of $As^{3+}$ also showed that the adsorption capacity slightly increased with increasing pH from 6 to 10. Meanwhile, the adsorption capacity of $Cr^{6+}$ was slightly decreased. From these results, it was concluded that the RA and RA/SS composites can be successfully used for removing the heavy metals ($Cr^{6+}$ and $As^{3+}$) from aqueous solutions.

  • Crushed pinewood and oakwood were studied as an adsorbent for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solution. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to describe the effects of contact time, initial Pb(II) concentration, pH, competing cations, and adsorbent dosage on the Pb(II) adsorption process. Kinetic studies revealed that the Pb(II) adsorption process for pinewood and oakwood followed both pseudo first and pseudo second order model. The Fruendlich model best described equilibrium adsorption data with correlation coefficients ($R^2$) of 0.956 and 0.950 for pinewood and oakwood. The maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) onto pinewood and oakwood was found to be 16.853 and 27.989 mg/g, respectively. The Pb(II) adsorption onto both pinewood and oakwood was increased as pH increased in the pH range 3-9. The presence of cations such as $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, and $Al^{3+}$ decreased Pb(II) adsorption. The Pb(II) removal was greater in seawater than deionized water, resulting from the presence of $CO{_3}^{2-}$ and $OH^-$ ions in seawater. This study showed that pinewood and oakwood have a potential application in the remediation of Pb(II) contaminated water.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the removal of fluoride using thermally treated pyrophyllite as adsorbent. Sorption experiments were conducted under batch conditions to examine the effects of adsorbent dose, reaction time, initial fluoride concentration and solution pH on fluoride removal. In the experiments, the pyrophyllite thermally treated at different temperatures [untreated (P-U), $400^{\circ}C$ (P-400), $600^{\circ}C$ (P-600)] were used. Results showed that the adsorption capacity was in the order of P-400 > P-U > P-600. The XRD analysis indicated that both P-U and P-400 were composed of quartz, dickite and pyrophyllite while P-600 was quartz. The BET analysis showed that the specific surface area was in the order of P-600 > P-400 > P-U. Kinetic data showed that fluoride sorption to P-400 arrived at equilibrium around 24 h. Equilibrium test demonstrated that the maximum sorption capacity of P-400 was 0.957 mg/g. In addition, fluoride removal by P-400 was not sensitive to solution pH between 4 and 10. However, fluoride removal decreased considerably at highly acidic (pH < 4) and alkaline (pH > 10) conditions. This study demonstrates that pyrophyllite could be used as a low-cost adsorbent for fluoride removal from aqueous solution.
