  • An analysis of lateral hydrodynamic forces of compressor labyrinth seals is presented. Basic equations are derived using a two-control-volume model for compressible flow. Blasius' wall friction-factor formula and jet flow theory are used for the calculaton of wall shear stresses and recirculation velocity in the cavity. Linearized zeroth-order and first-order perturbation equations are developed for a small motion about the centered position by expansion in the eccentricity ratio. Integraton of the resultant first-order pressure distribution over the seal defines the rotordynamic coefficients. As an application a rotordynamic analysis of the balance drum labyrinth seal found in an ethylene regrigeration copmressor is carried out. The rotordynamic characteristic results of the labyrinth seal are presented and compared with other types of seals, honeycomb seal and smooth seal.

  • In this paper, the results of an analysis of the dynamic behavior of the eddy current brake(ECB) system are presented. The measured irregularity of the track in Korean high speed line and the track irregularity given by ERRI(high level) were used for simulation. The wheel-rail profile combination were analyzed with different rail gauges. A model of the bogie with an substitute body fur the carbody was implemented in the Multi-Body-Simulation Program Simpack. • The non-rational transfer function of a Bernoulli-Euler beam, as an important component of a flexible structure, is analyzed. The true pattern of zeros of that transfer function is investigated as a function of sensor and actuator seperation. Translational displacement sensors are used for two cases in which a force input and a moment input are seperately applied. When the displacement sensor is located at a certain point, the first pair of zeros on the real axis of the s-plane arrive at the origin and cancel the rigid-body mode. The location of the translational displacement sensors on the beamat which the rigid-body mode of the beam is unobservable is analyzed as the center of percussion and is uniquely located for each case. If sensor is moved beyond such a point, a pair of zeros appear on the imaginary axis and move away from the origin along the imaginary axis of the s-plane.

  • This paper discusses the numerical study on the stability of the high-speed EMU by developing its lumped parameter model including the effect of the creepage. The 6, 10 and 14 degrees-of-freedom (DOF) lumper parameter dynamic models are developed and the critical hunting speeds calculated from each model via Matlab software are analyzed and compared. It is demonstrated that the critical hunting speeds decrease while the degrees-of-freedom increase. In addition, the parametric study is conducted to extract major design parameters to influence on the stability of the high-speed EMU.

  • This paper presents Newtonian formulation of the dynamics of plates treated fully with Active Constrained Layer Damping (ACLD). The developed equations of the plate/ACLD system provide analytical models far predicting the dynamic of laminated plates subjected to passive and active vibration damping controls. Numerical solutions of the analytical models are presented fir simply-supported plates in order to study the performance of the plate/ACLD system for different control strategies. The developed models present invaluable means for designing and predicting the performance of the smart laminated plates that can be used in many critical engineering applications.

  • A simple and efficient method is presented for the dynamics of interconnected flexible beams having large rigid body rotations. A simple mass matrix is obtained by interpolating the displacements in the global inertia frame, and the elastic force is also simply computed by using linear finite element technique with the moving frame attached to the beam. For the beams connected by revolute joints, kinematic constraints and relative rotations between the beans are not required and the equations of motions are time integrated by a simple ODE technique. Numerical simulations are conducted to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the present technique.

  • In this study, the numerical and dynamic simulation on staging problem including forward jet mechanism is conducted. The forward jet plays a vital role in staging, which jets out from aftbody. This staging environment needs full dynamic characteristics study and flow analysis for securing staging safety. Present study performs dynamic simulation of prebody and aftbody with flow analysis using Chimera grid scheme which is usually used for moving simulations. As a result, separation mechanism using forward jet well works in staging for given initial conditions and reverse thrust, chamber pressure variation from experiments. Furthermore, it is found that the technique using forward jets for staging is excellent for securing the separation safety.

  • The vibration of washing machine at spinning cycle is important problem that affects the performance of a product. In this raper, the inner structure of the washing machine is modeled as a rigid body suspension system and transfer farce caused by rotating unbalance mass is obtained using Newton's the 2nd law. and this model is used to predict the verge of walking instability during the spinning cycle. The walk of the drum washing machine is suggested by calculating the force transmissibility between drum and the cabinet. As calculating the resultant force exerted for cabinet, the friction coefficient of the pad is suggested to avoid the walk. In addition, relation between translational slip and rotational slip is derived and method to avoid the rotational slip is introduced.

  • For the purpose of developing a modeling technique for reduced-order dynamics of thermoacoustic instability, we constructed an electrically heated Rijke tube and measured the pressure oscillation inside the tube. Analysing the measured pressure data showed that the instability generated three major oscillation modes, among which the first mode frequency quite well matches the result from a rough acoustic analysis. As a continuing research, a data-based modeling technique for the thermoacoustic instability will be developed in the near future.
