Frost heave occurs when ground temperature decreases under $0^{\circ}C$ and soil volume expands, which causes roadway and buried pipe line failure due to differential heaving. There are several models to predict volumetric strain caused by frost heave, but they requires expertises who have professional background and experience related to numerical analysis. This study presents an evaluation method to predict volumetric strain caused by frost heave with fundamental physical properties of soils. The evaluation method is assessed with experimental results.
Frost heave on foundation(or ice jacking) is defined that foundation is uplifted by heav- ing force exerted around foundation from freezing of soils. This phenominon is often occurred in the light -weight structure e.g, small building, electro - telegraph pole, street light, pipe line, budge and reference point of survey. Frost heave is the most important factor in design of foundation of structure and the key issue in understanding mechanism of foundation in permafrost area. In this study is reviewed the state of the art on the analysis method of frost heave in USSR and is suggested the design method of benchmark pile. On the basis of above results, this study suggests a design chart able to do esign simply the benchmark pile in Yakutsk region.
Korea is known to have seasonal frozen ground during a winter season due to climatic and ground conditions. Temperatures below $0^{\circ}C$ cause pavement failure by frost heaving and thaw settlement. A frost protection layer has been constructed in pavements to avoid damage caused by frost action. Anti-frost design methods in Korea have been adopted, which is established in U.S. and Japan. However the characteristics of soils in Korea are different and there are no reasonable modifications to accommodate these characteristics. Therefore, adequate pavement design procedures including seasonal frost action, as well as construction and maintenance practices are required. In this paper, the frost penetration depths along national roads in Korea are presented based on field measurement over several years (1991~2010). The frost penetration depths are analyzed with respect to the Provinces of Korea and sunny/shaded areas.
The second scientific antarctic station of South Korea is under construction at Terra Nova Bay located in eastern Antarctica. Ground condition in the Antarctica is frozen in general, but there are seasonal frozen grounds with active layers sporadically. When the active layer is frozen, frost heaving occurs that might cause the differential movement of frozen ground and the failure of structures. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the frost heaving susceptibility of soils at Terra Nova Bay before starting antarctic station construction. This study presents experimental investigation of the frost heaving susceptibility of soil samples with variation of particle sizes and unfrozen water contents. The soil samples were taken from five different locations at Terra Nova Bay and physical properties, unfrozen water content, and frost heaving tests were performed. For the frost heaving tests, soil specimens were frozen with constant freezing temperatures at the top and with drainage at the bottom in order to stimulate the frost heaving. The frost heaving tests provide volume expansion, volumetric strain, and heaving rate which can be used to analyze the relationship between the frost heaving vs. particle size and the frost heaving vs. unfrozen water content. Experimental results show that the more the fine contents exist in soils, the more frost heaving occurs. In addition, the frost heaving depends on unfrozen water content. Experimental data can be used to evaluate the frost heaving susceptibility of soils at the future construction site in the Antarctica.

Pile foundations constructed on extremely cold regions cause serviceability problems of superstructures from repeated actions of ground freezing and thawing. Oil sand module plants are mainly constructed on seasonal frozen ground. Due to the freezing and thawing actions of grounds, vertical movements of piles have been observed. To solve these erratic pile movement problems, thin vertical layer of PET aggregates is installed around the pile shaft to prevent potential unfavorable pile movements. There is no known method to calculate "thin PET aggregate layer" -surrounded pile shaft resistance (capacity) against vertical loads; therefore, this experimental research is conducted. Specifically, in this study, horizontal (normal) pressures on pile shaft were assessed varying PET aggregate layer thickness based on the experiment.

Numerical analysis was conducted to determine the effect of soil behavior by thawing and freezing of seasonal frozen soil on pile foundations. The analysis was performed using the finite element method (FEM) to simulate soil-pile interaction based on the atmosphere temperature change. Thermomechanical coupled modeling using FEM was applied with the temperature-dependent nonlinear properties of the frozen soil. The analysis model cases were applied to the MCR and HDP models to simulate the elastoplastic behavior of soil. The numerical analysis results were analyzed and compared with various conditions having different length and width sizes of the pile. The results of the numerical analysis showed t hat t he HDP model was relat ively passive, and t he aspect and magnit ude of t he bearing capacit y and displacement of the pile head were similar depending on the length and width of the pile conditions. The vertical displacement of the pile head by thawing and freezing of the ground showed a large variation in displacement for shorter length conditions. In the MCR model, the vertical displacement appeared in the maximum thaw settlement and frost heaving of 0.0387 and 0.0277 m, respectively. In the HDP model, the vertical displacement appeared in the maximum thaw settlement and frost heaving of 0.0367 and 0.0264 m, respectively. The results of the pile bearing capacity for the two elastoplastic models showed a larger difference in the width condition than the length condition of the pile, with a maximum of about 14.7% for the width L condition, a maximum of about 5.4% for M condition, and a maximum of about 5.3% for S condition. The significance of the effect on the displacement of the pile head and the bearing capacity depended on the pile-soil contact area, and the difference depended on the presence or absence of an active layer in the soil and its thickness.
The ground in cold region consists of active and permafrost layers. The active layer at the unstable state may cause ground corrosion and uplift, when the temperature of frozen ground increases due to seasonal changes. The thermosyphon is one of the stabilization methods to maintain the ground stability in the frozen ground. The thermosyphon is a closed two-phase convection device that extracts heat from the ground and discharges it into the atmosphere. In this study, ground freezing experiment using a thermosyphon and simulated ground with the isolation material was conducted to evaluate the thermal performance of the thermosyphon. In order to consider the thermal performance of the thermosyphon, commercial numerical program (TEMP/W) was adopted. Likewise, the thermal performance of thermosyphon and thermal properties of ground were applied in the numerical model. In a series of comparisons with experiment results and numerical study, thermal performance of thermosyphon can be evaluated.

The wetland is very important ecologically as a habitat of diverse organisms. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the morphogenetic environment of Jilmoe Bog found in the Odae Mountain National Park Jilmoe Bog is located in the high etchplain(1,060m) where Daebo Granite which had intruded in Jura epoch of Mesozoic era has weathered deeply and has uplifted in the Tertiary. The annual mean temperature of study area is $5.3^{\circ}C$, the annual precipitation is 2,888mm. The minimun temperature of the coldest month(january) is below $-30^{\circ}C$ and the depth of frozen soil is over 1.6m. Jilmoe bog consists of a large bog and a small bog. The length of the large bog is 63m and its width is 42m. The basal surface of Jilmoe bog is uneven. Jilmoe bog is a string bog fanned due to frost actions. In String bog, its surface is wavy with stepped dry hills and net-like troughs crossing hill slope. It seems that string bog is related to the permofrost or seasonal permofrost of cold conifer forest(taiga) zone(where the depth of frozen soil is very deep in the least in winters). String bog is a kind of thermokarst that frozen soil thaws differentially locally in declining permofrost and ground surface becomes irregular. There is turf-banked terracette of width $30{\sim}40cm$ in the headwall of small cirque-type nivation hollow formed at footslope of Maebong mountain around Jilmoe bog. This turf-banked terracette is formed by the frost growth of soil water below grass mat in periglacial climate environment. Where water is plentiful such as a nivation follow${\sim}$valley corridor and a headwall of valley, turf patterned grounds of width $30{\sim}50cm$ are found. This turf patterned ground is 'unclassified patterned ground', earth hummock. In conclusion, Jilmoe bog is a string bog of thermokarst that the relief of ground surface is irregular according to locally differentially thawing of permofrost(frozen soil). Jilmoe bog is high moor, its surroundings belongs to periglacial environment that turf-banked terracette and turf patterned ground are fanned actively.
