Development of a Accident Frequency Prediction Model at Rural Multi-Lane Highways (지방부 다차로 도로구간에서의 사고 예측모형 개발 (대도시권 외곽 및 구릉지 특성의 도로구간 중심으로))

  • Generally, traffic accidents can be influenced by variables driving conditions including geometric, roadside design, and traffic conditions. Under the circumstance, homogeneous roadway segments were firstly identified using typical geometric variables obtained from field data collections in this study. These field data collections were conducted at highways located in several areas having various regional conditions for examples, outside metropolitan city; level and rolling rural areas. Due to many zero cells in crash database, a Zero Inflated Poisson model was used to develop crash prediction model to overestimated results in this study. It was found that EXPO, radius, grade, guardrail, mountainous terrain, crosswalk and bus-stop have statistically significant influence on vehicle to vehicle crashes at rural multi-lane roadway segments.

  • 최근 활발히 진행되는 교통 속도 예측 연구는 기존에는 하나의 모델로 하나의 도로구간에 대해서만 예측하는 문제를 주로 다루었다. 그러나 하나의 도로구간을 하나의 속도 예측 모델로 예측할 시, 도로구간마다 모델이 존재하여야 하므로 모델의 예측 비용이 도로구간의 수만큼 증가한다. 본 논문에서는 하나의 모델을 통해 다수의 도로구간에 대한 속도를 예측하는 다중 도로구간 속도 예측 모델을 제안한다. 제안하는 다중 도로구간 속도 예측 모델은 기존의 단일 도로구간 속도 예측 모델 대비 정확도를 보존하면서, 그 예측 비용을 크게 감소시켰다.

  • The past researches on roadway segment safety estimation focused on intersections, which are the primary traffic accident regions. The past researches on roadway segments, However, analyzed the effects of certain factors on the traffic accident occurrence rate by organizing the individual geometric structures of the roads, and there is still a dearth of researches on the development of a traffic accident estimation model for rural roadway segments. Therefore, this research focused on rural two-lane and multilane roadway segments and developed traffic accident estimation models through the application of statistical techniques. This is required to explain such high frequency of zero counts in the traffic accident data. In this research, it was found that the Hurdle model is more suitable than the Poisson or negative binomial-regression model for explaining the excess zeros case. In addition, main variables were chosen to estimate their effects on traffic accident occurrence at rural roadway segments, and the safety at such rural roadway segments was estimated. In this research, it was assumed that there are different factors that affect the safety at two-way lane and multilane roadway segments, and a traffic accident estimation model was developed by dividing the two-way lane and multilane roadway segments.

  • A five-day work week has a great impact on the life styles of employed persons and their families. At the same time, the changes also impact on the transportation system because travel patterns, demand, and pattern of congestion change during weekends. The negative impacts on the transportation system should be examined in order to conceive measures to maintain dependable levels of service during weekends. The first step to pursue the issue is to identify the road segments heavily affected by augmented leisure trips. In this study, characteristics of highway segments are engineered by principal analysis using data from TCS database. Scores from principal analysis are employed to distinguish highway segments for leisure trips from total 197 segments considered in this study. In addition, indexes from principal analysis are proposed to identify highway segments for leisure trips.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 GIS 공간분석을 이용하여 음영에 따른 노면결빙예상구간을 정량적으로 평가하는데 있다 산악지역의 도로는 절토 및 터널구간이 많아서 겨울철에는 결빙구간이 발생될 우려가 있으며, 이는 교통 안전사고를 크게 야기시킬 수 있다. 따라서 도로의 기본설계에서부터 각 구간에서의 일조 환경 및 노면결빙예상구간을 정량적으로 정확하게 예측할 수 있는 분석이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 동해고속도로 중 약 29km구간에 대하여 3차원 모델링, 일조 시뮬레이션, 지오데이터베이스 구축, GIS 중첩 기능에 의한 공간분석을 통해 노면결빙 예상구간을 추출할 수 있었다. 연구결과, GIS를 이용할 경우 기상조건 별로 도로의 일조영향에 따른 노면결빙 예상구간을 정량적으로 추출할 수 있었으며, 연구대상지역 중 상당한 구간이 결빙의 위험에 노출되어 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 GIS를 이용한 렌더링 기법이 기존의 음영기복 방법보다 정확하며, 3차원 상에서 그림자의 변화를 시각적으로 판단할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 향후 본 논문이 도로관련 법제도상의 노면결빙구간에 대한 규정을 제정하는데 크게 이바지할 수 있을 것으로 생각되며, 도로 설치 구조물의 배치 및 도로포장의 종류 등을 고려한 추가적인 음영구간추출 연구가 필요하다고 판단된다.

  • Association of South East Asian Nations(ASEAN) has recently decided to develop ASEAN Highway Network to connect member countries by road in an attempt to achieve a goal of closer economic integration in the region. This entailed the necessity to newly construct or upgrade some 5,481 km of road sections to make ASEAN Highway Network functional. This study offers haw we can prioritize development of these road sections using the Analytic Hierarchy Process. Particularly, it shows how individual road sections can be prioritized considering the importance of corridor or road group where the individual road section lies. It also develops how values of different evaluation criteria can be compared in the same scale. This new approach can be useful in prioritizing highway development in such cases where candidate road sections are widely scattered around the region, so detailed benefit and cost analysis is practically too demanding to carry out.

  • 위치 기반 서비스에 대한 활용이 증가되면서 도로 네트워크 환경에서 차량의 이동 궤적을 통해 밀집구역을 발견하기 위한 연구들이 진행되고 있다. 기존 연구들은 특정 도로 세그먼트에 포함된 차량 수를 고려하여 밀집 구역을 발견하였다. 하지만 실제적인 도로 환경에서는 도로마다 다른 길이나 도로의 폭이 다르기 때문에 차량 수만으로 도로가 밀리는 구간을 발견하기에는 문제가 있다. 또한 기존 밀집 구역 발견 연구들은 도로 내 방향성을 고려하지 않는 밀집 구간을 발견한다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 기존 밀집도 기반 클러스터링 연구와는 달리 도로 내 차량 및 도로 환경을 고려하여 도로 혼잡 구간을 판별하는 기법을 제안한다. 제안하는 혼잡 구간 판별 기법은 도로 네트워크를 거리와 폭이 다른 세그먼트로 분할하여 방향성이 존재하는 각 도로 내에 차량의 속도 및 객체 포화도에 따른 혼잡 세그먼트를 추출하고, 이를 통해 혼잡 구간을 판별하는 클러스터를 수행한다. 성능 평가 결과를 통해 제안하는 기법은 혼잡 구역을 클러스터링하여 방향 별 혼잡 구간을 파악할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

Extraction of Road Surface Freezing Section using GIS (GIS를 이용한 도로의 노면결빙구간 추출)

  • This study suggests a method for securing road safety by extracting the expected surface freezing section in planning a route using GIS. When planning a road construction in a mountainous area it is possible to confront surface freezing especially in the wintertime. In addition, it is required assessment data of surface freezing rates in the case of turnkey inspections of newly constructed or expanded roads. Consequently, an analysis method that can quantitatively estimate the surface freezing section and sunshine influence on each section of a road is needed. We can extract the expected surface freezing section which amounted to around 29km of the Donghae highway, with such techniques as three-dimensional modeling, sunshine simulation geographical database construction and spatial analysis using the overlay function of the GIS spatial analysis. This study can be used as a method to assess advance safety which has a direct influence on planning the blueprint that should be approved by a policy maker after efficiently understanding the expected surface freezing section in accordance with hill shade.

A study of Improvement on the Road Drainage Poor Site (도로배수 취약구간의 개선방안에 대한 연구)

  • This research aims to investigate the cause of the occurrence of a weak road drainage section scientifically and specifically through a site survey for a poorly drained section occurring due to rainfalls during road operation. This paper deeply reviewed the existing research results and current situation data on the poorly drained sections accumulated in Korea Expressway Corporation in order to investigate the cause of the occurrence of a weak road drainage section, and deeply verified and analyzed the weak sections for the road surface drainage facilities and the other road drainage facilities by visiting the expressway controlled by the 6 local headquarters and 33 branches of Korea Expressway Corporation. As a result of site surveys for the weak road drainage sections, i) in a road surface section, occurrence of ponding in the road shoulder pavement due to slope changes, bad collection of water in the collecting well at a median strip, shortage of road shoulder dike height, and inferior construction, etc. was analyzed to be the main cause of the occurrence of poorly drained sections, and ii) in a road neighborhood section, the occurrence of pavement height difference in a main road and shoulder section due to inferior ditches on a slope and the bad drain age at the inlet and outlet of a culvert due to soil deposits, debris, etc. were analyzed to be the main cause of the occurrence of weak sections. Proposed as a plan to improve the poorly drainage section of road were i)calculation of capacity through material changes at the ditch, enhancement of vertical sections and hydraulic analysis in terms of construction and other aspects, ii)derivation of a combined slope considering a slope and a vertical linearity and maintenance of proper distance between drainage structures in a vertical concave section in terms of geometrical structure, and iii)calculation of the drainage facility installation interval using a minutely rainfall intensity formula and a non-uniform flow analysis technique in terms of hydraulics and hydrologics and prompt removal of rainfalls from the road surface according to a linear drainage method.

A Study on the Analysis for the Effects of the Section Speed Enforcement System at the Misiryeong tunnel section (구간속도위반 단속장비 설치효과 분석 - 미시령동서관통도로를 중심으로 -)

  • Since 1996, Korean National Police Agency has been promoting a project for installation of Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) system aiming at reduction of accidents. The number has increased to 5,348 stations throughout country as of December 2012. Recently, the Section Speed Enforcement Systems have been installed at many sites to produce a general effect well beyond the localised effect at overt fixed camera sites. In this study aims, we have analyzed the effects of the Section Speed Enforcement System at the Misiryeong tunnel section. We have found that there were a statistically significant 21.4%~31.% reduction of the average speed and 45.9% reduction in a number of traffic accidents per month. Accordingly, the study indicates that the Section Speed Enforcement Systems at Misiryeong tunnel section has effective to produce road safety.
