An Analysis about Narrative of Weights and Measures in Korean Elementary Mathematics Textbooks (한국 초등수학 교과서의 도량형 서술 내용에 대한 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to support elementary teachers to use the teaching of weights and measures. To help the author of the next elementary mathematics textbook to be used as a reference for the quantitative narrative process. For this purpose, I focused on the contents of textbooks in terms of definition, a unit of measure, and calculation. As a result, first, as for the definition of weights and measures, it is taken as an example rather than as an explicit statement. Second, several problems were found in the metrology content and metric unit introduction order. Third, the computation between measurement units stood in simple computation rather than procedural knowledge. Fourth, it was concluded that the reason and groundbreaking of the grade-specific differences and the amount of a student's education are necessary.

  • 우리나라 고대 도량형연구의 개척자로 성균관대학교 물리학과를 창립, 그 기초를 다졌고 음악에 심취해서 국악의 기본음계를 정립하는데 큰 공을 세운 물리학자 송은 박흥수 박사(76세)는 그가 30여년간 살아온 서울 성북구 삼선동5가 151-13의 옛 아이 시 에이(I.C.A)주택에서 지금도 고대 도량형연구에 꺼지지 않는 정열의 불꽃을 사르고 있다. 박박사가 태어난 곳은 울산지 중구 송정도 70번지. 지금은 사람의 왕래가 많은 도심에 속해 있지만. 1919년2월23일 그가 태어나 살던 송정마을은 도시와 거리가 먼 작은 농촌이었다.

Computed tomography investigation of the three-dimensional structure and production method of White Porcelain Water Dropper with Openwork Lotus Scroll Design and Eight Trigram Design in Cobalt-blue Underglaze (CT 조사를 통한 청화백자투각연당 초팔괘문연적의 3차원적 구조와 제작방법에 대한 고찰)

  • This study investigated White Porcelain Water Dropper with Openwork Lotus Scroll Design and Eight Trigram Design in Cobalt-blue Underglaze (hereinafter, the "water dropper") in the collection of the National Museum of Korea using computed tomography (CT). A replica was produced to examine both the structure and its original production method. The CT scanning identified no joint lines or pores in the clay, which suggests that the body (the lower part of the water dropper) was shaped in a single piece using a mold and was then matched with a mold-formed lid (the upper part of the water dropper). The inner container of the body portion was roughly trimmed with a bamboo knife so that its upper surface could be securely attached to the bottom of the lid and prevent any leakage in the joined surface. It appears that the inner container for storing water was made first in a cylindrical shape that met the unit of quantity used at the time and could be easily formed by molding. It was transformed into a trapezoid shape during the process of combining it with the lid. A cylindrical inner container was reproduced using silicon 3D printing to compare its capacity with that of the original inner container. The comparison revealed that the reproduced container had a capacity of 152.5㎖, whereas the original container holds approximately 168.6㎖, a figure similar to three hop (around 174㎖) in Joseon-period units of quantity. Since the capacity of the cylindrical inner container corresponds to a known measure from the late Joseon dynasty, it is likely that the water dropper was originally produced to contain a cylindrical inner container.

A Debate of Fan-Jin(范鎭) and Sima-Guang(司馬光) about Le(樂) and Lu(律) (범진과 사마광의 악(樂)·율(律) 논쟁)

  • Le 樂 is important in Politics of the Kings. It is the same in Nothern Song period(北宋). There was an argument about Le 樂 and Lu 律 in Nothern Song Period. Those who argued were Fan-Jin(范鎭) and Sima-Guang(司馬光). They argued for 30 years. Fan-Jin insists that a standard of weights and measures is Lu and a standard of Lu is the fundamental tone of twelvenotes scale, Hwang-Jong 黃鍾. On the other hand, Sima-Guang insists that a standard of Lu is weights and measures and a standard of Le is Equilibrium and Harmony, Zonghe 中和. Fan-Jin thinks it is possible to restore a Sage King's music through the right standard of Lu. But Sima-Guang thinks it is impossible. Sima-Guang believes that the only way to restore a Sage King's music is to complete Zonghe. And Fan-Jin thinks Zonghe is the work of the king whereas Sima-Guang thinks Zonghe is the order of man and everything. The key point in the argument is Lu and Zonghe. Fan-Jin regards Lu as the basis of music, whereas Sima-Guang regards Zonghe as the basis of music. Lu is a tangible law and Zonghe is a intangible law. Although the argument between the two ended in a stalemate, the argument shows the difference between the scholars at the time.

  • 조선조 제 4대 세종(재위 1418-1450)이 재위했던 32년은 조선조 과학기술의 눈부신 발전기였다. 특히 천문 관측기와 자격루를 위시한 각종 계시기의 발명, 인쇄기술의 개선, 도량형 통일, 화포를 위시한 무기으 ㅣ개량, 측우기의 발명 등 당시로서는 첨단을 달리는 과학기술의 황금시대를 연출하였다. 소위 첨단기술의 시대라는 오늘 우리는 세종시대의 과학과 기술을 직접 재현하여 이용할 수는 없지만 당시의 과학기술의 실체와 이것의 발달을 가능하게 했던 사회적 분위기와 배경을 알아 봄으로서 그것을 타산지석으로 삼을 수는 있을 것이다.

  • 1983년 10월에 개최된 제 17차 국제도량형 총회에서 '미터는 비칭 진공속에서 299 792 458분의 1초동안 진행한 경로의 길이이다.'로 정의 됨에 따라서 미터의 현장장비인 분자의 초미세 구조 흡수선에 주파수 안정화한 레이저의 광주파수 및 진공파장이 표준선으로 추천되었다. (1) 본 연구에서는 이들 주파수 안정화 레이저 중 하나인 옥소안정화 헬륨 네온 레이저 (파장 633㎚)를 개발하고 이에 대한 연구의 결과를 기술하였다.

  • As the value of living a complete life has spread, the importance of elderly education as a part of continuing education is ever increasing. As much as the bodily health, the activity to prevent dementia or healthy brain is being emphasized, the math utilizing traditional material was suggested to devise the curriculum appropriate for the emotional/cognitive level of the elderly. This could induce interests of the elderly, and ultimately improved the concept of self-consciousness and self-esteem. Also, a plan for effective application of such 'silver math' should be prepared, and the execution of a fusion study for a medical approach of its effects is proposed.

  • Revision of the International System of Units (SI) in terms of fundamental constants was achieved by the 26th General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) in November 2018. Four base units (kilogram, ampere, kelvin, and mole) of SI were redefined by fixing the values of the Planck constant h, elementary charge e, Boltzmann constant k, and Avogadro constant $N_A$ respectively. In this paper the scientific principle for redefining the kilogram from the Planck constant with the Kibble balance is explained as an example. The revised SI takes effect on May 20, 2019.
