Quality attributes of welsh onion (Allium fistulosum L.) as affected by harvest timing (November, December 2006 and January 2007) and storage temperature (5, 10 and $20^{\circ}C$) were investigated in terms of respiration rate, weight loss, decay rate, color, hardness, sensory quality. A higher respiration rate was found when welsh onions were harvested later and storage temperature was higher. A smaller weight loss was observed in welsh onions that were harvested in November and stored at temperature of $5^{\circ}C$, demonstrating a 9.35% reduction. In other words, there were a minimum difference of 2.15% and a maximum difference of 9.92% between the weight loss in test samples harvested in November and those of test samples harvested in other months. The decay rate was higher in welsh onions harvested in January. The degree of color was more stable in test samples kept at temperature of $5^{\circ}C$ than those kept at higher temperature (10 and $20^{\circ}C$). There were, however, no significant differences in color changes among test samples harvested at different times of the year. Thus color change is closely associated with temperature. Also, welsh onions were harvested in November and stored at temperature of $5^{\circ}C$ showed a good sensory quality.

Physiological activities, including antioxidant activity, were examined in water and 80% ethanol extracts of leaf, stem, and root parts of Welsh onion. Total phenol and flavonoid contents were highest in both extracts of leaf and lowest in those of stem among parts of Welsh onion. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity was highest in root among 80% ethanol extracts and in leaf among water extracts. 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radical scavenging activity and reducing power were the highest in both extracts of Welsh onion leaf. Inhibitory activities against lipase in both extracts and ${\alpha}$-glucosidase in water extract were also highest in Welsh onion leaf. Alcohol dehydrogenase promoting activity was also highest in extracts of Welsh onion leaf. Both leaf and water extracts of stem only exhibited antimicrobial effects on Gram (-) Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This result implies that leaf is the most optimal part of Welsh onion as functional material, although stem and root parts of Welsh onion also exhibited physiological activity, including antioxidant activity.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Welsh onion administration on $CCl_4$-induced hepatic injury in rats. The increasing rate of the body and organ weight was not significantly different by the ad-ministration of the Welsh onion. Welsh onion (2, 4, $10\%$ w/w) was given for 4 weeks with the injections of $CCl_4$. Total serum lipid was significantly decreased in all treatment groups compared to $CCl_4$ only treatment group (p<0.05). The Welsh onion from winter season was more protective effect by lowering the serum levels of transminase (SGOT and SGPT) compared with others, the levels of transminase - phosphatase (ALP) in serum. The Welsh onion from winter at a dose of $4\%,\;10\%$ (w/w) showed significantly hepatoprotective activity which was comparable to that $CCl_4$-induced hepatic damage. Histological evaluation showed that Welsh onion partially prevented $CCl_4$-induced inflammation, necrosis and vacuolation. Pretreatment of Welsh onion reduced extent of the necrosis found 24 hr after the intraperitoneal administration of $CCl_4$. The present study shows the liver protective action of the Welsh onion against experimentally induced liver damage in rats. This suggests that the Welsh onion may be used as an effective hepatoprotective agent.

The ethyl acetate-soluble acidic fraction of juice, hot water, and MeOH extract of Allium fistulosum L. showed DPPH radical-scavenging activity. Each fraction was purified through silica gel adsorption column chromatography, and the active substances in the juice and hot water extract were identified as succinic acid, fumaric acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxycinnamic acid, and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid. For the MeOH extract, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxycinnamic acid, and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnmic acid were identified as the active substances by GC-MS. The contents of these compounds were determined by GC analysis, and their anti-oxidative activities were measured using the DPPH radical-scavenging assay. The results obtained showed that 4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid was the dominant antioxidant in Allium fistulosum L.
Three different Allium plants, including wild garlic (Allium monanthum Max; AMM), onion (Allium cepa L.; ACL) and green onion (Allium fistulosum L; AFL), have been widely used as spicy food in daily life. This study was attempted to investigate the properties of antioxidant, whitening and anti-wrinkle activities in water extracts in Allium plants. The antioxidant, whitening and anti-Wrinkle activities were evaluated by performing DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities, inhibitory effects on tyrosinase, and elastase, respectively. The water extract (10 mg/mL) of onion, wild garlic and green onion exhibited DPPH radical scavenging activities of 28.46%, 28.45%, and 15.91%, respectively. The inhibitory effects of tyrosinase activities by wild garlic, green onion, and onion were increased by heating the extracts at $90^{\circ}C$. Additionally, the wild garlic extract showed higher elastase inhibitory activity than those of other plant extracts. These results suggest that water extracts of Allium plants may be useful as potential sources of beauty foods due to higher antioxidant, anti-melanin and anti-wrinkle activities.

The initial free surface profile and energy of a tsunami are closely related to the wave heights of a tsunami in nearshore and can be determined by using the earthquake parameters. Along the Western coast of Japan, the possibility of a tsunami triggering by undersea earthquakes is very high. Many seismologists have attempted to predict the parameters of earthquakes that could occur in these regions, but it is difficult to accurately predict them. As such, several case studies have been conducted involving behaviors of an unexpected tsunami that occurred in this region. If a relationship between the earthquake parameters and the wave heights of a tsunami is found, it would be easier to examine the effects of the tsunami. In this study, several virtual tsunami events have been simulated, and the wave heights of the tsunami are computed by varying the earthquake parameters to examine the relationship between the earthquake parameters and the tsunami wave heights. Numerical simulations have been conducted in virtual topography.
Allium fistulosum L. seasoning oils were manufactured by autoclaving method. Materials were from total, leaf, trunk and root part of Allium fistulosum L. with refined soybean oil. Physicochemical characteristics of these Allium fistulosum L. seasoning oils of 4 kinds were not much different, but seasoning oil from leaf part was more green color. Total 35 volatile components were detected, in which propenyl trisulfide and propenyl propyl trisulfide were the major components. They were found as 26.94 ppm and 26.26 ppm in seasening oil from root with the highest level, respectively. Propenyl propyl disulfide was the major component as flavor characteristics in Allium fistulosum L. seasoning oils. Main component of original roasted flavor in Allium fistulosum L. seasoning oils would be confirmed the root part.
Leaf feeding insect species of welsh onion and shallot were surveyed, and their species abundances were analyzed by fitness test for lognomal disstribution. A total of 13 and 6 species were identified on welsh onion and shallot, respectively. The dominant species on welsh onion were Thrips tabacid, Acrolepiopsis sapporensis, Spodoptera exigua, and Liriomyza chinensis. Thrips tabacid was also identified as the major species on the shallot. The community dominance was high in welsh onion and shallot observed on 12 October, Suwon. The species abundance patterns of the two communities were well described by lognormal distribution(P> 0.50).
