Effects of an exercise program to strengthen the musculoskeletal system on the body of elderly women (근골격계 강화를 위한 운동 프로그램이 노인 여성의 신체에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of an exercise program applied to prevent musculoskeletal changes that occur due to aging on pain, muscle strength, balance ability, and falling efficacy in elderly women. An exercise program including quadriceps setting exercise, bridge exercise, resistance band exercise, and foam roller exercise was applied to elderly women aged 65 years or older once a week for 8 weeks. A visual analog scale was used to evaluate pain, muscle strength was evaluated using a digital muscle strength meter, balance ability was measured using the Berg balance scale, and fear of falling was evaluated using the fall efficacy scale. As a result of the study, compared to before the experiment, pain in the lower back and knee area was significantly reduced, the strength of the quadriceps femoris and gluteus maximus was significantly increased, and balance ability and falling efficacy were significantly improved. In conclusion, application of a program that includes various exercise methods has a positive effect on the physical activity of elderly women by strengthening the musculoskeletal system. Additionally, in order to prevent physical changes due to aging, an exercise program that includes various exercise methods that can strengthen the musculoskeletal system should be applied.

  • The hamstring muscle injury is a quite common sports injury which has a wide spectrum of treatment option that simple muscle strain can be treated conservatively otherwise total rupture of muscle or musculotendinous junction must be treated surgically. Among them, rupture of proximal hamstring muscle near at its origin site is quite uncommon and it should be treated surgically because it could cause several complications if not treated appropriately. In this case report, the authors report successful surgical treatment of acute rupture of proximal hamstring muscle and also would like to review the clinical presentation of this type of injury.

  • In this paper, we present a effective method of gait rehabilitation training using critical point of median frequency in muscle fatigue analysis using EMG. To target the five healthy volunteers, EMG signal were measured in the quadriceps femoris muscle and the tibialis anterior muscle in order to determine muscle fatigue. We performed a test targeting three adult male for 30 minutes on a treadmill at a speed of 6km/h same. EMG signal analysis in frequency and median frequency is calculated to quantification of muscle fatigue, and calculated the critical point which is saturated by muscle fatigue during 30 minutes. We set saturated point the threshold which muscle can withstand. The results of this paper, we are able to quantify the threshold of the muscle.

  • Purpose: To report two cases of bone tumors other than osteoid osteoma in the proximal femur and treated with percutaneous high frequency radioablation method. Cases: We reviewed two cases with intracortical chondroma and enchondroma in the femoral head retrospectively. The patient with intracortical chondroma was a thirty one year old woman and had suffered right hip pain of 1 year duration. The lesion was located in the head of right femur and treated with CT guided percutaneous high frequency radioablation after needle biopsy under general anesthesia. The symptom was gone immediately after the procedure and was discharged postop. 1 day. 15 months has passed without symptom recurrence. Second case having enchondroma, was 56 year old woman complaining of gluteal area pain for 3 months. Radiologic evaluation showed osteolytic lesion with sclerotic rim on the inferior portion of the left femoral head. She received a same therapy with CT guided radiofrequency ablation following needle biopsy. She reported dramatic pain relief after the procedure and was discharged postop. 1 day. No symptom has occurred for 3 months until now. Conclusion: We present 2 cases of bone tumor occurred in the hip joint area other than osteoid osteoma which were treated with CT guided radiofrequency ablation.

Factors for Survival and Complications of Malignant Bone Tumor Patients with a Total Femoral Replacement (대퇴골 전치환술 받은 악성 골종양 환자의 생존인자와 합병증)

  • Purpose: Total femoral replacement (TFR) is an extreme form of limb salvage. Considering the rarity of this procedure, reports have focused on the complications and a proper indication is unclear. This study analyzed 36 patients with TFR who were asked the following: 1) prognostic factors related to survival in patients who underwent TFR with a tumoral cause; 2) overall implant and limb survival; 3) complications, functional outcome, and limb status for patients surviving for more than 3 years. Materials and Methods: According to the causes for TFR, 36 patients were categorized into three groups: extensive primary tumoral involvement (group 1, 15 cases), tumoral contamination by an inadvertent procedure or local recurrence (group 2, 16 cases), and salvage of a failed reconstruction (group 3, 5 cases). The factors that may affect the survival of patients included age, sex, cause of TFR, and tumor volume change after chemotherapy. Results: The overall five-year survival of the 36 patients was 31.5%±16.2%. The five-year survival of 31 patients with tumoral causes was 21.1%±15.6%. The five-year survival of 50.0%±31.0% in patients with a decreased tumor volume after chemotherapy was higher than that of increased tumor volume (p=0.02). The five-year survival of 12 cases with a wide margin was 41.7%±27.9%, whereas that of the marginal margin was 0.0%±0.0% (p=0.03). The ten-year overall implant survival of 36 patients was 85.9%±14.1%. The five-year revision-free survival was 16.6%±18.2%. At the final follow-up, 12 maintained tumor prosthesis, three underwent amputation (rotationplasty, 2; above knee amputation, 1), and the remaining one had knee fusion. Among 16 patients with a follow-up of more than three years, 14 patients underwent surgical intervention and two patients had conservative management. Complications included infection in 10 cases, local recurrences in two cases, and one case each of hip dislocation, bushing fracture, and femoral artery occlusion. Conclusion: Patients showing an increased tumor volume after chemotherapy and having an inadequate surgical margin showed a high chance of early death. In the long-term follow-up, TFR showed a high infection rate and the functional outcome was unsatisfactory. Nevertheless, this procedure is an inevitable option of limb preservation in selected patients.

Analysis of Lower Extremity Muscle Activation According to Squat Type during Whole-Body Vibration (전신진동 운동 시 스쿼트 형태에 따른 하지근육의 근활성 효과 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of whole-body vibration and to provide scientific basis for effective exercise by analyzing the differences in lower extremity muscle activation according to squat position during whole body vibration. In this study, muscle activation during whole-body vibration was measured in 10 healthy males in their 20s with no orthopedic conditions during standing posture, deep squat, half squat, and heel raise squat. Muscle activation was compared by measuring the root mean square (RMS) with electromyography electrodes attached to lateral gastrocnemius, tibialis anterior, vastus lateralis, and biceps femoris. The vibration intensity was applied in combinations of the volumes of 50 and 80 and the frequencies of 10, 25, and 40 Hz in each posture. The results showed that there were differences in muscle activations of external gastrocnemius, tibialis anterior, and vastus lateralis among the position(p<.05). The heal raise squat was found to have a high muscle activation effect.

Comparative Analysis of the Body Muscle Activity According to the Prop and Different Foot Stability during Pilates Bridge Motion (필라테스 브릿지 동작 시 소도구와 발의 불안정성 차이에 따른 신체 근육의 근활성도 비교 분석)

  • The aim of this study was to examine the comparative analysis of body muscle EMGs according to the prop and different foot stability during Pilates bridge motion. Eighteen adult males(age, 22.3±2.1 years; height, 173.89±4.51 cm; body mass, 72.61±4.13 kg; and BMI, 24.03±1.31 kg/m2) participated in this study as subjects. The Pilates bridge was composed of a total of 9 motions, according to the props (NP, no prop; RG, ring; GB, gym ball) and different foot stability (BS, basic surface; FR, form roller; BOSU, both sides up). We measured the right's muscle activities of the upper rectus abdominis, lower abdominal stabilizers, external oblique, adductor longus, rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, tibialis anterior, and biceps femoris. The research findings were as follows. During Pilates bridge motion, the use of GB was found to be more effective in activating the body muscle. And during Pilates bridge motion, the use of BOSU was found to be most high in activating the body muscle as well. To summarize the research findings, the use of GB and BOSU during Pilates bridge motion were discovered to enormous affect muscle activities. Therefore, the results of this study are expected to be able to present efficient Pilates bridge exercises for strengthening physical strength.

Association Analysis of the 6-bp Deletion Variant of the MYH3 Gene with Meat Color Traits in Crossbred (Landrace × Jeju Native Black Pig) Pigs (제주재래흑돼지와 랜드레이스 교배 축군에서 MYH3 유전자의 6-bp 결실 변이와 육색 형질간의 연관성 분석)

  • This study was conducted to examine the association between the myosin heavy chain 3 (MYH3) in 6-bp deletion variant genotypes and meat color traits in a crossbred pig population Landrace and Jeju native black pigs (JNBP). The longissimus dorsi, semimembranosus, triceps brachii and biceps femoris muscle from each carcass were used for the analysis of meat color traits. A total of 187 pigs and three meat color traits, CIE L* (lightness), CIE a* (redness), and CIE b* (yellowness), were analyzed. All experimental pigs were successfully genotyped for the MYH3 6-bp deletion variant using Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. We detected three MYH3 6-bp deletion variant genotypes qq, Qq, and QQ with 0.091, 0.551 and 0.358 genotype frequencies, respectively. Compared to qq homozygotes, the MYH3 6-bp deletion QQ genotype animals showed a higher levels of the meat colors traits CIE L* (lightness), CIE a* (redness), and CIE b* (yellowness) in longissimus dorsi (p>0.05, p<0.001, p<0.001), semimembranosus (p>0.05, p<0.001, p<0.001), triceps brachii (p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001), and biceps femoris (p<0.01, p<0.001, p<0.001), respectively. The QQ genotype pigs was associated with increasing meat color traits in the crossbred between Landrace and JNBP. Our findings suggest that the MYH3 6-bp deletion variant genotypes can be used as valuable genetic markers for JNBP-related breeding programs to improve meat quality and control meat color traits.

  • In this paper, we present the method of gait phases detection using multi biomedical signals during normal gait. Electromyogram(EMG) signals, muscle of thigh angle measurement device and resistive sensors are used for experiments. We implemented a test targeting five adult male and identified the pattern of EMG signal of normal gait. For acquiring the EMG signal, subjects attached surface Ag/AgCl electrodes to quadriceps femoris, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius medialis. Resistance sensors are attached to the heel toe and soles of the each feet for measuring attachment state of between feet and ground. Infrared sensors are attached on the thigh and thigh angle measurement device has the range from flection 25 degrees to extension 20 degrees. The results of this paper, The stance and swing phase could be confirmed during the normal gait and be classified in detail the eight steps.

  • The purpose of the study was to perform a comparative analysis of the success and failure cases to increase the completeness of vault "Shirai-Kim Hee Hoon" technique. The subject of the study was "K" a male gymnast from Korean Artistic Gymnastic National team. The results obtained through the three-dimensional analysis during international as well as practice session are as follows: Firstly, excluding BC, the lead time in each PrF, HC and PoF phases were shorter during successful trials than in failure trials. Secondly, during successful trials, the horizontal and vertical velocity appeared to be higher during taking off, which contributed positively to the leaping motion in the horizontal direction. Thirdly, when compared with successful and failure trials, the body's angular rotation was highly maintained during the takeoff from the spring board followed by larger thigh angular displacement at the vault before actually attempting the backward rotation.
