Self-efficacy was found to have negative relation with social anxiety and positive relation with active coping style while social anxiety was negatively related to active coping style and positively to passive coping style. There were differences in social anxiety and stress coping style in accordance with the level of self-efficacy. The higher group in self-efficacy used more active coping than the lower group. The support and intervention program to increase self-efficacy would be effective in decreasing social anxiety and increasing active coping style among college students.

  • This study examined effects of experience of nurses' incivility and social anxiety on emotional labor in nursing students during clinical practice. The participants were 161 nursing students in universities located in G province and C province. Data were collected from November 19 to December 15, 2018 through self reported structured questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise regression. Experience of nurses' incivility correlated positively with social anxiety and emotional labor. Social anxiety was positively correlated with emotional labor. Participants' experience of incivility and social anxiety explained 21.9% of variance in emotional labor among nursing students. The findings indicate that experience of nurses' incivility and social anxiety are important factors to be considered in working to reduce emotional labor. Therefore, systematic programs to effectively manage and response the incivility problems in clinical practice and reduce social anxiety level should be developed.

Twelve students are selected of three hundred thirty students who completed an assertiveness sacle and a social anxiety scale, and finally six students were assigned to an experiment group and the others to a control group. ACT program consisting of 8 sessions twice a week approximately 120minutes is provided for experiment group, on the other hand, nothing is provided for control group. All participants completed an assertiveness sacle, a social anxiety scale at pre-test, post-test, and 6 weeks follow-up periods. In the experimental group, the assertiveness score was improved after ACT program but not in the control group. The improvement observed in the experimental group was maintained until the follow-up test. In the anxiety test, the experimental group showed a larger decrease than the control group, and the difference was also found in the follow-up test. Finally, the implications and limitations of this study, along with suggestions for future study were discussed.

  • This study investigates the effects of communication ability and interpersonal anxiety on self-esteem before the first clinical practice in nursing students. A survey was administered to third-year nursing students who had yet to begin their clinical practice from May 15 to May 20, 2023. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, multiple regression with the SPSS/WIN26.0 program. The results showed that self-esteem is positively correlated with communication ability(r=.564) and negatively correlated with interpersonal anxiety(r=-.590) and there was a negative correlation between communication skills and interpersonal anxiety(r=-.515). The impact on self-esteem was in the order of interpersonal anxiety (𝛽=-.41) and communication ability(𝛽=.35). In conclusion, the research results showed that the higher the communication ability and the lower the interpersonal anxiety, the more it affects self-esteem. Thus, it is important to develop and implement tailored programs that enhance communication skills and facilitate interpersonal interactions while reducing anxiety for nursing students at different school years and stages.

  • This study aimed to survey the impact of smartphone overuse on upper extremity pain, anxiety, depression, and interpersonal relationships among college students. Subjects completed a structured questionnaire consisting of the Smartphone Addiction Inventory, the Musculoskeletal Symptom Checklist, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory-II, and the Relationship Change Scale from May to June 2012. We analyzed the survey data from 525 responses, excluding unreturned or incomplete surveys. Data were analyzed using the $x^2$ test and t-test to determine the differences in smartphone overuse and its impact on upper extremity pain, anxiety, depression, and interpersonal relationships between two groups: the overuse and normal use groups. Moreover, Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to examine the correlation between smartphone overuse and upper extremity pain, anxiety, depression, and interpersonal relationships. The results placed 62 people (11.8%) in the smartphone overuse group. The extent of smartphone overuse was more severe among female than male college students, and longer time spent using smartphones per day was directly related to smartphone overuse. The smartphone overuse group evidenced higher shoulder pain than the normal use group did, but no differences were found in other sites of the upper extremities. State anxiety, trait anxiety, and depression were higher in the smartphone overuse group than in the normal use group. Subjects with a higher extent of smartphone overuse experienced increased state-anxiety, trait-anxiety, and depression. Moreover, subjects with higher state-anxiety, trait-anxiety, and depression scores were more likely to have poor interpersonal relationships. Therefore, early screening for smartphone overuse should be evaluated, because it can be useful in developing addiction prevention programs to improve posture, stress coping, positive mental health, and effective interpersonal relationships.
