Interviews were conducted with teachers of 6 specialized schools in order to determine the operations and teachers' perceptions of home economics education. Students' perceptions for home economics class were gathered through surveys with students from the 3 (of the original 6) schools that authorized the questionnaire survey. The final analysis utilized 205 student responses. Survey data were analyzed using the SPSS program. The results of the research were as follows: First, home economics education within specialized middle schools was mostly conducted according to the form of the technology-home economics curriculum, which is the national common basic curriculum. Compared to the 7th national curriculum, the class of technology-home economics curriculum in 4 schools occurred 1 hour less each week. Each school incorporated various specialized curricula related to home economics. Second, as for the operation of home economics education in specialized schools, most home economics classes were conducted by teachers who had majored (or minored) in home economics. Moreover, all but 1 school, which used self-made materials, used the national textbook and dealt with the entire content of the textbook. For teaching-learning methods and instructional media, various means were utilized. For evaluation methods, most schools based grades on paper-and-pencil tests(50-60%) and performance tests(40-50%). Third, among teachers' perceptions of home economics education, the meaning of home economics education was focused on practical help and the pursuit of home happiness; the purpose was to realize the happiness of students and their homes by applying these to actual living, and increase students' ability to see the world. In regards to difficulties in educational operations, most pointed out poor conditions of practice rooms. As for differences from general schools, most teachers mentioned the active communication with students. Fourth, through the home economics class, it was found that students perceived the goal of technology-home economics curricula as lower than average. Among students' perceptions about home economics class, most were negative. Perceptions about goal of technology-home economics curricula and home economics class also showed meaningful differences according to each school. Students of the school, which had more home economics class hours and specialized curricula related to home economics, perceived more positively. Also, students who were more satisfied with school and learned from a teacher who majored in home economics tended to perceive home economics class more positively.

To verify this study, two groups of sophomore students from an Alternative High School located in Hwasung : The Experimental group consisted of 20 students who would participate in the Computer Science program by learning or applying new skills, based on the Multiple Intelligence Hypothesis. The Comparison Group consisted of 19 students who would follow the standardized Computer Science teaching and lesson plan. During five weeks, the multiple-Intelligence effect was executed in the search groups comparing the differences of the pre-test and pro-test. Pro-test showed following results: Firstly, the experiment search group showed a higher significant improvement in the subject achievement, compared to the comparison group. Secondly, the experiment search group showed a much higher increase in the interest of learning, compared to the comparison group. Thirdly, the experiment search group did not show any differences of the social development compared to the comparison group.

  • This study investigated the factors that influence the attitude, trust, and acceptance toward the North Korean residents by South Koreans. Three hundred and ninety-two South Koreans, including 222 with no contact experience with North Korean residents and 170 with contact experience, answered a questionnaire. The experience group included police officers who provide protection and settlement service, labor counsellors, social workers, church people, college classmates and tutors, and teachers in alternative schools for North Korean youths. The results indicated that protecting police officers have highly negative attitudes in both cognitive and affective dimensions and also show low trust and acceptance. Teachers in alternative schools, on the other hand, were found to have both positive and negative cognitive evaluations of North Korean residents, but still maintained positive affect and high trust and acceptance. People with no contact experience had negative affect along with pity, and showed medium level trust and acceptance. The distinctive difference between the police officers and teachers were attributed to the individual characteristics such as authoritarian personality and uncertainty avoidance rather than to the frequency or depth of contact. The most important determinant of trust and acceptance were found to be the affective component. The implications of these findings on the selection and training of interface personnel and peace education were discussed.

  • Alternative education in Korea has grown into an educational movement since the 1990s. The alternative education is affecting and growing the public education system such as innovative schools, free semester systems, and high school credit systems. In 2021, an institutional foundation was also established to be recognized and supported as an educational institution. As a result of reflecting on the alternative education movement for 20 years, it is understood as stagnant lost time in the second half of the decade. It is discussing reorganizing the meaning of future-oriented "alternatives" with the new "alternatives". The poverty of educational philosophy has also been highlighted as an issue, but no special discussions have been underway. Thus, the study discussed to propose an educational philosophy that could capture the ideologies of alternative education. Critical pedagogy aims to foster human beings who are subjective, autonomous, active and self-reliant through conscious emancipation. In recent years, critical pedagogy have discussed ecological environment and feminism. The educational philosophy of scholars such as Freire and Illich was the basis of the early alternative educational movement. Considering this, the study discusses that Korea's alternative education movement can be understood through critical education and is reasonable as an educational philosophy for new alternatives in the future.

  • The comprehensive countermeasures against school violence recently announced by the government include some content on physical education classes. Physical education has long been ignored in school paradoxically in spite of the deteriorating physical strength and health of adolescents. The physical education subject undervalued in the middle of overly excessive competitions for college entrance exams finds its core goal in whole person education and officially emphasizes the development of personality aspects, which means that physical education claims important significance by providing diverse approaches to school violence prevention. This study thus set out to enhance the roles of physical education for school violence prevention. In Korean society, school violence has taken deep root due to the combined results of individual, family, school and community factors, the growth-first policy driven by compressed modern growth, and neoliberalism based on economic efficiency. School violence possesses such fixed value systems and convictions in Korean society. Education has failed to achieve some effectiveness because of the serious level of school violence, which calls for assessment of ideology having big impacts on educational environments. Given that it has been rediscovered that physical education has legitimacy of alleviating or preventing school violence through its value, an alternative to eradicate school violence should start with physical education normalization in school. Specific alternatives including the activation of sports clubs in school will be established as more fundamental practical alternatives when accompanied by the development of school violence-related programs and the operation of in-service training programs for physical education teachers.

  • Using a sample from Korea Education Employment Panel(KEEP), this study attempts to ascertain determinants of demand for alternative education in Korea. It found that children's gender and duration of computer use exert a strong effect on demand for alternative education. Also, those parents, who show more interest in government's education policy; are less content with the schools their children are attending; and exhibit the higher likelihood of migration for children's education, appear to have the stronger tendency to seek alternative education for their children. Meanwhile, there was a significant difference between male and female students in the factors that influence demand for alternative education. For male students, duration of computer use and the parents' interest in government's education policy tend to matter. For female students, however, health condition seems to be associated with demand for alternative education. For both male and female students, those parents' who are more discontent with the schools their children are attending and/or have the higher likelihood of migration for children's education seem more likely to send their children to alternative schools.
