  • A stability problem on wave instability of natural convection flow along isothermal vertical cylindrical surfaces has been formulated, accounting for the non-parallelism of the basic flow and thermal fields. Then the problem is solved numerically under the simplifying assumption of the parallelism of the basic flow quantities. It is shown that the flow corresponding to the same characteristic boundary layer thickness becomes more stable as the value of the curvature parameter increases. The stability characteristics for Pr=0.7 appear to be more sensitive to the curvature parameter than those for Pr=7.

  • The objective of the present study is to investigate the convective instability driven by buoyancy and the heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids. Using the property relations of nanofluid expressed as a function of the volume fraction of nanoparticles, the ratio of nanofluid Rayleigh number to basefluid one, f is newly defined. The results show that the density and the heat capacity of nanoparticles act as a destabilizing factor. With an increase of ${\gamma}$ which is the ratio of thermal conductivity of nanoparticles to that of basefluid, the thermal instability of nanofluid decreases but the heat transfer rate increases.

  • Experimental investigation was made to study the mechanism of fluid and thermal oscillation phenomena of surface-tension driven flow in a cylindrical liquid column heated from above which is the low-gravity floating zone simulated on earth. Hexadecane, octadecane, silicon oil (10cs), FC-40 and water are used as the test liquids. The onset of the oscillatory thermocapillary convection appears when Marangoni number exceeds its criteria value and is found to be due to the coupling among velocity and temperature field with the free surface deformation. The frequency of temperature oscillation decreases with increasing aspect ratio for a given diameter and Marangoni number and the oscillation level increases with Marangoni number. The flow pattern in the liquid column appears either as symmetric or asymmetric 3-D flow due to the oscillatory flow in the azimuthal direction. The free surface deformation also occurs either as symmetric or asymmetric mode and its frequency is consistent with those of flow and temperature oscillations. The amplitude of surface deformation also increases with Marangoni number.

  • Natural convection in a wide-gap horizontal annulus is considered, and the transition of flows from steady to oscillatory convection is investigated for the fluid with Pr=0.1. The unsteady streamfunction-vorticity equation is solved with finite difference method. As Rayleigh number is increased, the steady crescent-shaped flow bifurcates to a time-periodic flow with like-rotating eddies. And afterwards, a transition to an oscillatory multicellular flow with a counter-rotating eddy on the top of the annulus occurs. A transition from steady to an oscillatory flow occurs, but dual solutions and hysteresis phenomena are not observed.

  • Dual solutions for steady natural convection of air between two horizontal concentric cylinders are numerically investigated in the range of $D_i$/TEX>/L(=diameter of inner cylinder/gap width)$\leq$10. It is found that, when the Rayleigh number based on the gap width exceeds a certain critical value, a new flow pattern forming two counter-rotating eddies in the half of the annulus can be realized, which is different from the crescent-shaped flow commonly observed. In the new flow pattern, the fluid near the top of the hot inner cylinder moves downward. This solution is found for D$_{i}$/L.geq.0.3, but not for$D_i$/TEX>/L$\leq$0.2. As $D_i$/TEX>/L increase, the critical Rayleigh number is decreased, and tends to a finite limit.t.

  • The transition from steady laminar to chaotic convection in a glass melting furnace specified by upper surface temperature distribution has been studied by the direct numerical analysis of the two and three-dimensional time dependent Navier-Stokes equations. The thermal instability of convection roll may take place when modified Rayleigh number($Ra_m$) is larger than $9.71{\times}10^4$. It is shown that the basic flows in a glass melting furnace are steady laminar, unsteady periodic, quasi-periodic or chaotic flow. The dimensionless time scale of unsteady period is about the viscous diffusion time, ${\tau}_d=H^2/{\nu}_0$. Through primary and secondary instability analyses the fundamental unsteady feature in a glass melting furnace is well defined as the unsteady periodic or weak chaotic flow.

  • The characteristics of thermal instabilities of natural convection in a horizontal fluid layer bounded below by a rigid plate and above by an interface with a passive gas is presented. The critical Grashof number decreases as the surface tension gradient effect (Marangoni effect) at the interface increases and the flow remains unstable for a critical Marangoni number depending on Prandtl numbers. These results are in substantial agreement with those of Smith and Davis.
