  • This experiment was conducted to find out the optimum date for Combine harvesting of barley in the double cropping paddy field. By the consideration of moisture contents of grain, grain loss, rate of unhulled grain, and discoloring of external plant parts, the optimum date for harvesting was observed to be about 41 days after heading under natural condition. On the other hand, when desiccant was applied on the 34 days after heading, it could be shortened natural harvesting time for 3 days without any yield loss and grain qualities, too.

  • In order to solve the shortage of roughage supply for dairy farm in Korea, winter cereal forage production after harvesting of rice in the fallow paddy field was studied. Two parts are already reported at the previous paper - One was the model development of the mechanized production, and the other was the study of feasibility of the model and its desirable direction in Korea. In this study, the model system is applied for a winter cereal wrap silage production model to practice in Kyungbook National University farm on 3ha scale for 3 years. Results of the research are summarized as follows; It takes 2 or 3 working days to process the wrap silage in middle of May in Daegu region. Also, not much particular problem can be found during the application test of mechanized wrap silage production. Field capacity and field efficiency are estimated to be 0.6-0.85㏊/h and 50-70% in mowing, 1.1∼1.7㏊/h and 52∼80% in tedding and raking, 0.6∼1.1㏊/h and 25∼45% in baling and 0.5∼0.57㏊/h and 75∼85% in wraping, respectively. Total production cost is estimated to be 1,257won/kg-TDN in oversowing and wrap-silage harvest in 1.6㏊ working area. As a result, large scale field is recommended to produce the wrap silage in order to maximize the field capacity.

  • In order to solve the shortage of roughage supply for dairy farm in Korea, the mechanized model system for the production of winter cereal wrap silage in the fellow paddy field was developed in the previous studies. In this study, storage properties after long term storing of the winter cereal wrap silage were investigated. Also, the qualities of the wrap silage which was stored during 4 months were evaluated by sensory testings, analyzing chemical properties(moisture content, pH and organic acids) and investigating the increase of feeding value. The result of this study were summarized as follows; 1. After 300 hours storage, the acid level of the silage decreased slowly to 4.6 -4.8 pH. Also, the temperature was stabilized around 27-28$^{\circ}C$. The silage having below 5.0 pH is a desirable level for the most of good silage. 2. According to the sensory test and chemical property analyzation it was evaluated as the first class silage like a com silage. 3. Also, when the wrap silage are fed to the cattle, the cattle produced milk more 25% than that of conventional feed. 4. As an overall conclusion, winter cereal wrap silage in the fallow paddy field cm be one of the major roughage source in replacement of com and other conventional silage to dairy cattle in Korea.

  • A series of three separate experiments was contucted to investigate the effect of working time quality and animal palatability of barley whole crop silage by trench and round bale in paddy field of Central and Northern region from 1999 to 2001. Dry matter yield of trench and round bale silage was 12,562 and 12,555 MT per ha, respectively. Quality and animal palatability of silage by trench was slightly higher than those by round bale. Work time of trench silage and bale silage per ha were 4.9 and 5.7 time. Silage making areas by trench and round bale were 4 and 3ha per day, respectively, The results demonstrated that silage making by round bale was good for production cost over 7 working days.

  • "Youhan" (Hordeum vulgare L.), a new whole-crop barley cultivar, was developed by the breeding team at National Institute of Crop Science, RDA in 2012. Youhan has the growth habit of III, a light green and mid-sized leaf, hooded and lax-type spikes. The cultivar showed 107 cm of culm length, 641 spikes per $m^2$. The heading date of Youhan was May 1, which is one day later than that of the check cultivar "Yuyeon" in upland, and 2 days earlier than that of Yuyeon in paddy field. The maturation time was similar to check cultivar Yuyeon on June 4 in upland and May 31 in paddy field. In terms of winter hardiness and resistance to lodging and disease, Youhan also performed better than the check cultivar. The average forage dry matter (DM) yield in the regional yield trial was approximately 12.6 ton $ha^{-1}$ and 12.0 ton $ha^{-1}$ in upland and paddy field, respectively, which were 6% and 5% higher than that of the check. The yield also showed 7.3% of crude protein, 26.8% of ADF (acid detergent fiber), 47.8% of NDF (neutral detergent fiber), 67.7% of TDN (total digestible nutrients), and a higher grade of silage quality for the whole-crop barley. Fall sowing cropping of Youhan is recommended only in those areas where the average daily minimum-mean temperatures in January are higher than $-8^{\circ}C$, and it should not be cultivated in mountainous areas of Korea.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of feeding whole crop barley silage (WBS) on the growth performance, gain, feed requirement, carcass grade and beef quality of Hanwoo steers in 1999 to 2001. Twenty one steers were allocated, and divided into three treatment groups which fed rice straw only (control), WBS only, and fresh rice straw silage plus WBS during overall period ad libitum. Concentrates were fed at 1.5% level of live-body weight during growing stages, 4~12 months of age, at 1.8% level of live-body weight during early fattening stages, 13~18 months of age, and ad libitum after late fattening stages, 19~27months of age. The production yields of WBS were 17,135 kg as a silage, and 6,011 kg as a dry matter per ha, and the quality of WBS was 2~3 grade, while that of rice straw silage was 4grade. The daily gain with feeding of WBS (0.70 kg) during experimental period was higher than that of control group (0.65 kg), and the concentrate requirement (7.31 kg) per kg gain in WBS was lower than that of control (8.95 kg). The effects of gain and feed efficiency were very distinct during growing stage. i.e., the daily gain of WBS (0.84 kg) was increased by 65% compared to control (0.51 kg), and the concentrate requirement (4.16 kg) per kg gain in feeding of WBS was decreased by 35%, compared to control (6.39 kg). Meat quality with WBS was higher than that of control. Frequency rate of 1 and/or $1^+$ grade, and marbling score of feeding of WBS were 62.5% and 4.38, while those of control were 37.5% and 2.75, respectively. The results of the sensory evaluation showed that Hanwoo beef fed with WBS were better than that of control. In conclusion, feeding of WBS was desirable to improve daily gain, reduction of concentrates, feed efficiency and meat quality of Hanwoo steers.

  • A new barley cultivar "Doo San #781" has been developed from combination of Seijo #17 and Piroline at Sacheon Experiment Station, Doo San Poongsan Co. This cultivar is early, medium culm, lodging resistant and panicle numbers type. Also, yields of this cultivar were increased at all experiment locations regardless paddy-and up-lands cultivations except Cheju districts, thus indicating the broad adaptibility.ptibility.
