  • This study is concerned with analysing complexity, flexibility and dynamism of social discoursive space. The developmental process of social discourse is analogous to that of a spatial structure of social discourse. Post-capitalist society has seen New-Liberalism and New-Conservatism have become dominant, resulting in the deterioration of the cultural politics of citizenship. It is argued that the position of otherness, in which those binary structures (inside/outside or centre/margin) collide and collapse, is where subversive discourse can emerge to dominant discursive power. Furthermore, it is necessary to democratize social discursive space, through which the Other becomes able to. participate in the social production, distribution and consumption of social discourse.

  • In order to analyze textbooks from a discursive approach, the purpose of this study is to structuralize an analytic framework based on previous literature review and apply it to analyzing the meanings and their syntheses developed by words and visual mediators appeared in the definition of graph in first-year middle school textbooks. The discursive approach consists of the communicational approach developed by Sfard(2008) and the systemic functional linguistics developed by Halliday(1985/2004). In this study, ideational meta-functions for ideational meanings and interpersonal meta-functions for interpersonal meanings were employed to analyze the meanings produced by words and visual mediators in textbooks, whereas textual meta-functions for textual meanings were used for analyzing the synthesized relationships between words and visual mediators. Results show that first, density in mathematical discourse was very high and subjects in mathematical activities were ambiguous in the ideational meanings of words, and behavior aspect was more emphasized than thinking aspect in the interpersonal meanings of words which request student participations. In the case of ideational meanings of visual mediators, there was a lack of narrative diagrams, whereas there were qualitative differences in the case of offer. Second, there was a need for promoting a wide range of diverse synthetic relationships between words and visual mediators for developing enriched mathematical meanings through the varying uses like specification, explanation, similarity, and complement. These results are so important that they provide a new analytic framework from a discursive approach to textbook analysis because not only words, but also visual mediators are analyzed as tools for producing meanings in mathematics textbooks and their synthetic relationships are also examined.

  • This article aims to analyze the D. Fonvizin's travelogue, Letters from France (1777-1778). Through this end, we try to understand what the 18th century travelogue did for modern Russian literature. We analyze Fonvizin's travelogue by comparing with Radishchev's and Karamzin's, where necessary, which are also major travelogues in the late 18th century. We examine his text by focusing on the discursive function of travelogue among the three functions of the travelogue text as a methodology. We explore how Russians see foreign countries and how foreign people see Russian as well. Through this approach, we argue that the "literary" model of the travelogue in the 18th century Russia can not be fully understood without a discussion on social discourse, as Fonvizin's travelogue reveals a matter of modern Russian identity. Fonvizin was the one of the first who wrote modern Russian travelogue while modern Russian prose arose in the 1770s and laid the groundwork for the modern Russian novels. It is no coincidence that Russia's modern literature arose when 'travel wring' became popular in the 18th century Russia.

But social workers generally are inclined toward receiving division of gender role in family and applied to their family practice. Third, monolithic family image have a tendency of versatility in family structure, is inclined toward the division of gender role and myth of motherhood. Fourth, social workers perceived emotional tie as important nature of family solidarity and family as natural institution. Also these discourses of social workers were applied to their family practice. The results of this study reveals possibility that social work practice can be discoursive practice or interpretive practice.

  • This study critically explores the dynamics of discourse construction and propagation in the context of South Korea's National Pension Scheme (NPS) reform process, initiated in late 2022. It specifically interrogates the theoretical validity and empirical applicability of the dichotomous narratives encapsulated by the themes "Fiscal Sustainability" and "Old-age Income Security," which have polarized the discourse on pension reform. The analysis is structured as follows: to enhance accessibility, an overview is first provided of the NPS reform trajectory, including an outline of the existing system, the imperatives for reform, the stages of policy discourse, and the resulting reform proposal along with its attendant controversies. The study then delves into an examination of the discursive contestation over the 2024 reform proposal, employing media analysis of articles retrieved through the Korean Press Foundation's KINDS database (www.kinds.or.kr). Within this discursive framework, the "Fiscal Sustainability Discourse" underscores concerns of intergenerational equity and the long-term viability of the NPS based on fiscal projections. In contrast, the "Old-age Income Security Discourse" argues for the alleviation of elderly poverty, the welfare function of the NPS, and the state's duty to ensure a basic standard of living for seniors, supported by public sentiment expressed through deliberative forums. By analyzing the conceptual efficacy of fiscal sustainability and income security as paradigmatic lenses for understanding the objectives and operational rationale of South Korea's NPS, this study assesses their utility in distinguishing and contextualizing the complexities inherent in public pension systems.

  • During the pandemic period, when non-face-to-face education became commonplace, the discourse on digital education increased rapidly. And this is reflected in education policy. This is because most policies are influenced by public discourse. Therefore, this study analyzed influential newspaper articles to analyze public discourse on digital education. The results are as follows. First, in 2020, when COVID-19 peaked, the discourse on digital education surged, which originated from the need for efficient management of learning and students in non-face-to-face education situations. Second, the discourse discussed the problem of digital competency mainly about the problem of acquiring new skills and dealt with it most importantly. Third, the discourse of digital education was dominated by discourse from the current perspective. However, it is necessary to consider the perspective of what capabilities are needed for a future society. This is just because acquiring new technologies or cultivating functions cannot be seen as the whole of digital literacy. Therefore, it is necessary to revitalize the discussion on what digital competencies are needed in the future society and reflect them in education policies.

  • This paper studied on the geographical distribution location arrangement and the social construction of Pungsu discourse and the Pungsu(Fengshui) management of royal tombs on the Joseon Dynasty from the historical, cultural geographical perspective. The Pungsu landscape of royal tombs during the Joseon dynasty was the direct result of the political dynamics among the king, his family, other royal families, and various groups of vassals. Pungsu was a important factor in deciding tomb sites or landscapes, but it was a secondary factor to politics in the Joseon Dynasty. The primary factor was politics, clearly showing Pungsu's status in social discourse. The royal tomb Pungsu is defined as the Pungsu discourse of the Joseon Dynasty period which is combined with Confucian ideology in Korean Pungsu history.

  • Korean mass media has represented foreigners in their documentaries, entertainment shows, situational comedies, and dramas for long time, while the representations created plenty of controversies. Alleged West-oriented racism found from various televison programs may be one of them. Recently, however, more Korean television shows began to incorporate the ideas of multi-culturalism. This paper is an attempt to explore how television audiences interpret multi-culturalism reflected in the media. More specifically, this is a case study of JTBC's , a show featuring foreigners debating on various topics regarding Korean culture. Particularly, it focuses on disputes over the producers' decision to play 'Kimigayo' (the national anthem of Japan, which is also considered as a symbol of Japanese militaristic past) when introduced a new Japanese panel. Critical discourse analysis was adoped as the main research method, and researchers found that audiences draw certain guidelines in accepting multi-cultural aspects. If and when these aspects overstep the line, they tend to abandon it without hesitance. In the case of 'Kimigayo,' it was ethno-centrism and/or anti-Japanes sentiments which made multi-culturalsim much weaker. It does not mean that multi-culturalism was replaced-or defeated-by nationalism, but show the 'vulnerability' of multi-culturalsim. Multi-culturalism is not as concretely rooted in Korean society as many people have claimed or hoped. The research has its own limitations as a case study, but it is hoped to stimulate other researchers to keep their eyes on media and multi-culturalsim in Korea.
